SLOW Streaming, Unable to watch movies on Netflix, Hulu or YouTube

Streaming is way too slow! Can't stream Netflix, Hulu or YouTube without it buffering every few seconds! Even using the internet for checking emails is slow.  My cable internet service was much better than this!  I think I've made a huge mistake switching to this satellite service.

The consensus of people who posted here as Viasat streamers seems to indicate a minimum of 1 mbps is needed to stream.

Stupid me .. I thought satellite would be faster.   But it seems they're not providing the services they advertise.

Did you do ANY research before you signed that two year contract? Fifteen minutes reading would have gave you the true picture. Sat internet is a last resort for those of us that can't get anything better and even though I had no alternative, after doing due research I dithered for while before I signed.

I'll give you a piece of advise. Pay the $15 a month left in the contract, 23 months I assume for $345, maybe $330 since you pay in advance, and go back to cable. Beg them to take you back. I would and was prepared to buy out of my contract when I thought I was going to be able to get better internet but it fell through. Unless all you do is read email and look at a few cat pictures you won't regret it in the long run (probably even in the short run).

BTW - They do provide the speed they advertise, UP TO whatever speed, 12, 25, 50 or whatever. Anything over 0 is UP TO.

Sorry you gave up cable for satellite internet Mary. As David says, eat the early termination fee and go back to cable. Yes, it will cost $$$$. Consider it an expensive lesson learned. But in the end, you will be a lot better off for internet.

Maybe first see if something is wrong with her setup first?  What speeds are you getting Mary?  Streaming is throttled on Unlimited plans.  Do a speed test using this site....www.fast.com.  And post your results.  Do several tests to get a good reading.

Setup wrong or not, it is not going to provide the level of service that cable did. Therefore why struggle with something for almost 2 more years.

Yep, aggravating yourself for two years is a LOT worse than loosing somewhat over $300. I'd do it in a heartbeat if I had the opportunity.

@david, Champion ... I agree, but I'm on a fixed income and don't know how I would even come up with an $300+ to get out of their contract.  :(

The fast.com "speed" test recommended by Jim16 approximates what type of "speeds" you will get when streaming Netflix on a Viasat plan (it also applies to other viseo sources).

The result you get largely depends upon which Viasat plan you have. Which plan do you have?

The unlimited plans (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platimum) throttle detected video streams to speeds minimally sufficient to deliver 360P, 480P, 720P and 1080P qualities respectively - your speed test would seem to suggest you're on and unlimited Bronze plan. Any attempt by a video content  provider to deliver a quality higher than you plan supports will result in buffering that results in pausing playback until sufficient data is available for resuming play.

The advertised plan "speed" is the speed you may get (i.e. up to) from other sources (those not detected as video streaming). Other speed test sites will provide that speed for you - e.g. testmy.net

Let us know what plan you have and try a speed test over at:

https://testmy.net/

P.S. Speeds are rocking here in  Virginia right now but this too shall pass later this evening but from your speed test you did post, no you're not in Virginia. Nice little additional pieces of info being displayed by Fast.com now.

Just temper your expectations on what satellite internet is.
