SLOW speeds past few nights.

The past week the speed has slowed to a CRAWL in the evenings.  We have NOT maxed usage.  We called last night and were told that our satellite was working at 98% capacity.  That's fine, but we are PAYING big money for High speed!  We have enough problems staying within our limit before the month is over, I do NOT appreciate having slowed speed when I should have high speed.  This should NOT continue.  What are you (Exede) going to do to fix this?

I had this earlier in the week for about 4-6 hours and then it "fixed" itself.  But for another possibility, wonder what your Rx SNR is running?  It should be above 6.5 in good weather and the higher the better.  If they told you your beam was running at 98% capacity, that sounds beyond the threshold of an oversold beam.

I'm in OH, The Rx SNR currently is 8.5 db.  It has slowed again just in the past five minutes or so.  I'm noticing a pattern that it slows around 8 PM each night.  Just ran speedtest.net.  Download 1.24 Mbps and upload 0.75 Mbps.  I will follow up with Emerald.

Pattern of 8 PM each night does sound like congestion.   Please post what you find out from the Exede folks back here.

Denise,

Another long time user over in the other forum is experiencing similar symptoms and there's a good possibility both of you are on the same beam in OH since beam 319 covers most of the Buckeye state. His thread is at:

http://www.wildblueworld.com/forum/showthread.php?9235-Horrible-System-Performance-January-15th

Sometimes it helps for those having some commonality to band together and  raise a ruckus (a polite one) to get problems addressed more quickly - right JEP? So you might want to stop by there. But based on plans currently available on beam 319 (assuming that's yours), that area would not appear to be oversold yet. As Jep says, it appears to be congestion during regular peak times, but it also appears that there is some network tweaking going on also.

Old Labs - You Betcha!  I have to think as beams start filling up, they tweak the algorithm at the gateway and/or AcceleNet server to optimize the DAMA allocations.  I suspect they have models that tell them how to do this, but since this is the real world and we don't have model users, it is an empirical process.  Onward & upward!

Exactly, it's tough planning for 'unknown unknowns". More than anything I suspect that outside of congestion it's some additional tweaks impacting some in preparation for some additional changes - hopefully, they're "wikid pissahs" as we used to day in the old neighborhood.

Hi Denise, I would be happy to take a look at your connectivity and see what could be going on to be causing these slow speeds. Please send me an email to exedelistens@viasat.com with your account verification and I can get started. =)

ExcedeEmerald,  The speeds did get back to normal, but tonight and the past few days it has been VERY slow again.  How slow?  I couldn't get www.speedtest.net to load for about 20 min.  When it did load:  ping:  756ms, Download:  0.22 Mbps, Upload:  0.53 Mbps.  These are the results after my third test and they have all been essentially the same.....

Hi Denise, I see that you currently have an open case with Exede Amber. She will be back in the office on Tuesday, if you like I will follow up with her and have her respond to your email. If you like I can take a look at your speeds today, you would just have to send me a new email.

If I get up in the middle of the night, after say, 1 pm, I notice that I NEVER have full speed. I suspect that EXEDE is throttling early morning (in the wee hours) between say 1-6 am. I was not informed of this, but I think I will check my papers. But in no way would I agree to be throttled every night regardless of usage. I mean this ALWAYS happens. Even when I know I am well below max usage. When I signed up, EXEDE advertised that service between these hours was free. But they in no way informed us that it would be throttled. I'm looking at it right now actually. I'm at half my usual signal strength. It never goes to full during this time.

Many people on the Classic Plans are busy during the wee hours when it doesn't count against their usage.  A lot of these same folks use timed downloads to get movies and big files during these periods.   This was one of the reasons I switched to the Liberty Plan, because the late night hours were so congested.
