running out of data

I work from home and have had Exede a little over a year, when I signed up I was told that I would be fine with the 12 GB plan. I don't use a VPN. Well I run out of data within a week which makes it very difficult to work, ( I evaluate web pages)  My question is will there be better plans coming to my area soon? I live in northern CO. I upgraded to the 18 GB which isn't much better but its over $100 per month..

sounds like our house, our data pkg is the 12 GB plan too, lasts us 8 days. Last December I kept buying for gigs until our monthly cost was double, as fast as I could pay for more gigs it disappeared!! Have head friends say the same thing, they are on the largest plan available and their data disappears!!

Yes, I am having the same problem.  This has all just started occuring in the last 6 months.  It shows that I go through almost 1 GB a day and I have never used this much data in the past and I have been using my computer in the same manner as I have for the last 9 1/2 years in my business.  I believe that Exede is cheating us out of data.

shucks - for a better idea of where the data might be going?
yeah a valid question. write to the corporate office  and they can give you the details of where the data is going.
they can help you get a handle on it.
  hope it works for ya.
send your account info to them Only - phn number, name ought to get it started and perhaps give them permission to look up your details for you. [yup need to give them permission to look]

Me too. I'm on the 12GB (was 10) plan and I lost almost 5 GB in the first 4 minutes of the new month. I really haven't changed my usage habits but I've used 65% of my data and it's only day 6. I've been doing fairly well over the past few years but something new is happening this month. I've been following this site for some time now and the "mysterious data loss" seems to be the biggest issue on here. Finally, after almost 2 months of research, I found out how to set my computer to stop the downloads and schedule them during the night. Don't know if it's working and have no idea on how to find out. Now I'm trying different apps to try to monitor my usage so I can see what is going on.

It really shouldn't be this difficult to control my data usage and with the pervasiveness of this problem, I would think Exede would be a lot more active in trying to help their customers. Like providing a page where we could actually see our usage instead of having to send an email to get someone to look at it and then email us back.
The usage information I can look at through NRTC is next to useless (at 65% in the first 6 days it still reads "within normal usage") and when I sent an email to exede listens I was told that because I'm an NRTC customer they couldn't help.

I've read all the comments blaming the customers for not doing what they should, how this is a business that has to make a profit and to "be thankful that we even have internet". I just can't help but think that all the people who "complain" about running out of data actually may have a  point.

You know what they say.....  "walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, must be a....".

Life is busy enough as it is without having to spend this kind of effort just to keep your internet running...... and as has been said so many times here, it's not like we have a choice.. a "viable" choice that is.

If all of the lights are blinking rapidly, something is using data, if nothing is connected, then it is an equipment problem and, you need a service call to diagnose and fix that. Call 822-463-9333 and tell them that your data is being used with just the modem powered on, not connected to anything and, you want a technician to come look at it as well as your TRIA and cable to see where the problem is.

If ALL light blinking includes the bottom one (LAN light) then you have not disconnected it from a router or something that IS using data.

So I want to make sure I understand this.....

if all lights are blinking rapidly, data is being used?

when the LAN light, bottom one, is blinking that means that data is being used?

my router can use data?

if I remove the cat-5 cable from the modem and the cat-5 cable from the router and the lights are blinking, then there is a problem with the modem and the MODEM could be using data?

Also, if I shut down my computer and my cell phone (that's all I have) and the lights on the modem continue to blink, my router is using data?

Very important information...  Thank you.

I have had two computers update with the October semi-annual update for Win 10, each of those used about 4 GB of data.

There is no way to set Windows updates to download at a specific time period, you can only set a time frame for when the update is executed on your computer, however, the data for the update is downloaded whenever Microsoft decides it should download. You can prevent all updates and downloads by setting Windows 10 to Manually select updates, and you can set the Metered download switch to prevent most downloads, but critical downloads will still be done either way.

Yes. I'm pretty sure that's what got me. I've attempted the "prevent" and set to "Metered" so I'm hoping that will help. Is there anyway of finding out when MS will be sending updates so I could "head them off at the pass"...........

Mike,

You may wish to look at the Microsoft sub-forum of dslreports from time to time for some insight as to upcoming updates and issues:

https://www.dslreports.com/forum/Microsoft

Additionally you may wish to install the free version of Glasswire:

www.glasswire.com

This will give a very detailed account of what programs and processes are using data.

Glasswire will only report the data used by the computer that it is installed on but it is very accurate and very detailed.

ViaSat2 (next generation satellite) will likely be operational in February or March (don't hold me to that). Undoubtedly, there will be more plans and improved speeds.

Hi all,

To bounce off of Brian's comment. We are launching the ViaSat 2 plans very early next year. We can't say details just yet but the goals of the plans are to allow for MUCH MORE robust data options to allow for things like streaming. In addition we should see faster speeds as well. I know 12GB won't go very far now and that's 1000% going to be a thing of the past once this is launched. We just have to wait for some testing and preparations but THE WAIT WILL BE WORTH IT

Brad, great things are coming - I think a lot of people will be surprised.

James, be careful about making assumptions, might be better to wait and see.

We have not finalized pricing or really the plans just yet but the goal right now is that it's going to be more or less in line with a lot of the prices we offer now with maybe a few dollars for a margin of error but no crazy prices like that. We want to see MORE customers not less so we have to make the features and price attractive which is above my pay grade to have any sort of say, but I would expect around what we see now.

About 2 days ago I asked some questions regarding understanding what the blinking lights on the modem meant but did not receive an answer...  anyone care to venture a shot at some answers?  thanks

Hello Matt, thanks Jim16,
My modem doesn't look like the one above. I have a ViaSat Surfbeam2 Model RM 4100. Lights are blue and look more like slots with symbols under them. Starting from the top; circle with small vertical line.....  power?  arrow pointing at curve....  data in? arrow pointing away from curve..... data out? and 3 little boxes connected....  LAN/network?

My modem seems to be running fine. I was just trying to clarify the response from Bev. I posted 5 fairly specific questions that I was trying to get answers to.

Thanks.
