New to Exede/Satellite internet. I have wireless network, roku player and tv. The roku player is visible on the network as a wireless device. I was looking at the PlayitLater/On programs discussed int his forum as an option for downloading video from Amazon Prime and possibly other videos like youtube. I'd want to watch them on my tv, tho, possibly through my roku player. This as opposed to my laptop.

Are any of you guys getting something like this to work?

Will it download Amazon content now that they don't use unbox any more?

I'd love to stream movies again but I don't want it to wipe out my monthly bandwidth.

Thanks

Streaming video is the most data using thing you can do on the internet. Because of the data restrictions that go with all satellite based internet services, none of them are practical for streaming video. Streaming two HD movies would use up your data allowance for a month, and extra gigs are pricy at $10 each.

I have the most basic exede plan which allows only 10 gb/month--but I stream lots because I set up Playlater to record ONLY DURING LATE NIGHT FREE ZONE.  If you can stay up till midnight, this will work for you.  Starting at midnight, you can set up a queue of stuff (movies, tv series, etc) to record during late night free zone (and then go to sleep after you set up if you like) and then watch it from your hard drive during other hrs, of your choice. When you watch it from your hard drive, it is not using up any of your data allowance.   and yes, this does work with my roku2, so I can watch on my TV.  I have watched a ton of Netflix and Amazon Prime video stuff this way.  I have everything set up very carefully so that I use a minimum of data outside of the free zone (12 midnight-5a) and never go over my allotted 10 gb/mo.  But I surf the net (without streaming stuff)/do email all day long with no problems, even on the Exede minimum data plan.  Playlater just sent me an email today through which I set up a free trial month of HBO NOW because I wanted to keep watching more seasons of a show that Amazon prime only had season one available.  I would LOVE to have unlimited data and not have to be so careful, but on the other hand, I am glad to have these choices so I can enjoy streaming.  Without Playlater, I wouldn't be able to stream at all. BTW, I purchased a lifetime license for both Playlater/playon at a very reasonable price, so I wouldn't have to pay another ongoing monthly subscription for something.

I followed the directions from Jennifer, on this site, to use Playlater and it works great.  I have the lowest Exede offering and do all my streaming in the 1:00-5:00 free zone.  Jennifer also suggested a solution by using some free software that allows you to essentially set up a timer to establish your recording desires each night, and then you can go to bed.  I haven't tried it yet, the free software I mean, but I will.  The freeware is called Mouse Recorder Pro 2.

Be sure to set down your resolution to the lowest you can tolerate.  Because the speeds on Exede are quite good your services will likely default to HD unless you set them differently and the HD will use up your data very quickly.  If you have a plan with the  late night free zone then it won't matter as much if you are downloading at night.  If you are on a newer Liberty plan it is still a good idea to keep that set down so you won't burn through your priority data in a couple days once you go over your videos will run in a lower resolution because your speeds will be slower.

Tom, hope you will let us know if that Mouse recorder thing works with playlater...so far I haven't found anything that works to set up a playlater selection to start at a later time.  Playlater says they are working on a feature that would allow this, but no external program I have found so far works for playlater, although that kind of program works for a lot of other things, like downloads I want to have start during free zone.

Ana, no, Roku doesn't record movies...there is something called PlayonPlus.tv
that you can subscribe to that is a 3rd party software program--you can set it up so that you can record/stream things like Netflix and other such Roku (or other set top device) channels --but it gets recorded to your hard drive...then you can use playon.tv to be able to watch what you record either on your pc or on a separate device--such as a roku or other device.

To read up on Playon and PlayonPlus, go to:

If you can find a prior thread between myself and jennifer306, she is well informed on this subject and exercises the process as a matter of course daily.  I may be a while before I have the quiet time to sit down and finesse my way through getting it to work; she has already done it.

update:  The name PlayLater has been changed...it is now called "Playon Plus" and even more important, they now have a NEW feature where you can program your PlayonPlus software to record during the time frames you dictate...so no more need for any separate software, such as the Mouse thing--you now can program PlayonPlus ahead of time to only record  what you select during the LNFZ --very easy.  I love it.

Hey Lorrie, I've talk with you before when I was having problems with the new Playon. I'm still having problems and have given up trying to solve them. I usually set up 3 movies on Netflix to record. The lst will record for about a minute, then stop. The 2nd will start and usually record with no problem. If I have restarted the one that failed, it will usually record on the second try. The 3rd one never records. So I'm only able to record 2 movies during the free zone. I've tried manually setting and using their timer and have the same problelm no matter which I use. At one time I downloaded the latest version which worked better but still not right. I'm thinking about setting up 4 movies to see if it will record #4 or skip it like it does #3. So strange that it consistently does the same crazy thing. Is it still working good for you?

Hi Joan,

Yes, I switched and now use the newer program that became available, and so I can set up which things i want to record ahead of time (because I have it set to only do this recording during LNFZ hours--) this works pretty well except sometimes if it is in the middle of recording something when the free zone ends--I get a message that it didnt' record completely and have to re record then.

I did have a problem at one point where it was recording things outside the free zone, even though I had it set to not do that...so I contacted Playon via their email and they replied it was some glitch to do with my browser (Chrome)--it never happened again after that, thank goodness.  I have contacted pLayon a few times over the last couple of yrs and they have always been helpful in fixing my problem.

Is it possible that part of your problem could be like mine, that if the recording isn't completed by the end of free zone, then it doesn't work?  I would suggest contacting playon with these details about the problems you have had and see what they recommend.

Hope this turns out to be helpful for you!
