Data usage

We have used your service since 2006.  We were a lot happier when it was Wildblue.  We had the value plan, 10 GB for 49.99/month. Loved it, NEVER exceeded our usage, never had to worry about it, ever.  As time went on and things changed we had to change our plan and added a free zone from midnite to 5 am for many years.  Then it became Exede and in Sept. 2015 started charging 9.99/month equipment lease fee.  I use it for social media, email, banking and sometimes playing games.  We never download movies and seldom watch youtube.  Years ago we never exceeded our data usage, in fact there were times I would look up a recipe, forget the computer was on and not return to it for several hours yet we still never exceeded our usage.  Only the last couple of years did we become aware of usage and had to start watching it.  We have occasionally had to purchase additional gb's, but only a couple of times.  Plans changed (again) and in February we (upgraded?) from Essential 10 to Exede 12 - 10 gb with a free zone from 3am to 8 am.  Now we exceed our usage nearly every month!  With NO changes in what we use the internet for.  I have to watch my dashboard every day.  But here is the real kicker!  This week we went camping, gone Friday, Sat, Sun, back home on Monday and Tues AM, then gone again the rest of Tues, Wed, and back home today (Thursday) afternoon.  I checked my usage when we returned home, it was at 6.9.  I checked Facebook, the email, did some banking, printed a couple of things off the email, then I get this message that I have exceeded my usage and that the speeds will be significantly slower.  It says I used 3.1 gb's in an hour?  How can this be????  I called customer service and she said that I used a significant amount of gb's today.  REALLY????  In an hour?  There is NO WAY that this can be true.  Yet she was talking about my usage a year ago and last month and going on and on and not listening to what I was telling her nor addressing the problem, just telling me that I could buy more.  That is how you choose to handle it?  Really???

I have the same problems, and only on computer at night , we don't watch videos or movies. I upgraded 2-3 times and the usage still gets used up and have to keep adding usage. We will get on one night and it is up there, and then get back on the following night and it has went higher. And i was told alot of web searches. But that's not the case, we don't surf the web that much, we mainly check email, and play some games, that's about it. I never had this problem with hughes net.  I don't understand how it all keeps getting used up by the middle of the month or less when we are hardly on computer. We have internet on phones if we need it during the day. I upgraded to Liberty 25 it was good the first month, and it's only been 1 month later and its' only the 11th and it's already at 79 %  !!!
I checked it one night i went to bed it was like at 40 something, and get on the next night and it was at 70% so how is that when the computer is not on or being used, and same thing last night i checked it and agin this morning and it's at 79 % .  How is that ?  it gets to costly to keep adding usage just so we can use our computers. Thinking very seriously of finding another provider cause this is rediculous !!!!

It isn't just background user processes, the internet itself has changed in the last few years. Websites assume all users have unlimited high speed data, auto loading video, audio and images, ever changing, thus ever loading advertisements and the like abound today. That wasn't the case, even just 5 years ago.

Media blockers, like UBlock help but, advertisers are getting smart to that too and, either finding ways to circumvent blockers or, blocking sites until you stop blocking large media ads and other content.

Viasat knows this and, they do want to give us the data to be able to forget about needing blockers and, just enjoy the internet as we please. Expanding capacity with satellites isn't fast or inexpensive where as ground based ISPs can do it quickly and, inexpensively by comparison.

Yes Viasat is a for profit company but, I assure you that is NOT their primary focus, especially with regard to residential and small business customers. They really do want to give us unlimited internet at the fastest possible speeds and, keep prices affordable. It takes a lot for them to do that and, they are working toward those goals. Viasat 2 is proof of that. It may not look like it now, but, be patient a bit longer, I think we will all see they mean it when they say better plans are coming soon.

If it truly is not about the money, then give us what we need (data blockers, tools, education, changes to our service) to combat this instead of punishing us for something that is beyond our control.  You know what is required, we don't.  I don't want to buy more gb's, I want to utilize the ones that I am already paying for, instead of having them unknowingly stolen from me.  When will the customer stop being punished for being the customer.

Sue, Exede/Viasat cannot endorse a product it does not own but, I can. Get UBlock or UBlock Origin, whichever your devices, computers and browsers support. It's easy to use, easy to control and, easy to turn off if you need to. It blocks ads and ALL larger media elements form loading. That saves a lot of data.

As for Viasat/Exede yes they know what the internet demands and, what users want today and, they are working toward giving us that. Viasat 2 being launched is proof of that. I expect some great plans as soon as Viasat 2 is online and able to provide service. Hang in there, better plans are just a few months away now. :)

Champions are customers, we pay for our Exede internet service same as you do. Viasat/Exede does not pay us for trying help out here on the forums, we do so because we want to help our peer subscribers where we can.

Many of us are long time customers who have been through most of the problems you will see posted here, and sometimes a few that aren't posted so much. We each had to learn to make the most of the limited capacity (data caps) and, learn how to preserve our data for what we decide it should be used for.

I for example, Have been a customer since 2004. I had WildBlue service back then. When it became available, I upgraded to Exede. I've had Exede Classic, Exede Business and, Exede Liberty plans over the years. I've had the old WildBlue modem, the standard Exede modem and, now the Wifi, Boost 25 Exede Modem. I have Exede  voice as well.

Now with this ecede plan without Dishnet,I am using 1 gb per day. even with computer off. What do you guys uses to detriment how much customers use? I know it's not just me there are 100's of post on the net about this.

We keep bumping up the data plans and still run out of data and not doing anything any different.

Mike,

Its likely you  aren't doing anything different but  .....

Many websites sure are in a number of ways:

Auto-start video

HTML5 video prefetch

More advertising

Your operating system likely has if running Win7, 8.1 or Win10

Your video card drivers (if using Nvida hardware)  share "telemetry"

If using AVG as an anti-virus it too "shares" user data.

The list goes on and on.

Before you can get a handle on your data you have to find out what devices on your network are using data in both programs that you see and background processes that operate ... in the background.

Install the free version of Glasswire on all Windows based machines.

Get a router that tracks data usage per device.

I posted a lengthy thread this morning covering this subject. Just because you aren't actively doing something with a device doesn't mean the device isn't doing something in the background. Turning off auto updates will probably end your problem. If you have Apple products then the IOS updates can be well over 1 gig PER DEVICE.
Personally, I installed usage meter apps on all of our devices so I could track down where the data was going. These days you have to be proactive when it comes to issues like this.
