Because of the latency inherent to satellite, Exede will not work well for some online games. If you can play with a ping of 500 or more, then yes, it will work but if you need near zero lag, (ping under 300) then satellite is NOT going to work for that game.

Well all I know is Im an true real time gamer and I had to purchase a router to try and see if the real time game i play would work and although with the router the signal was extremely weak I was able to game with my friend although to enter a game without being with him the count wouldnt let me in, So I have a LAN Adapter coming via US Mail should be here today for a direct hard wire connection Im hoping that this will allow me to enter into a gaming lobby and play so Im crossing my fingers as this is the only reason I purchased excede for my area. We shall see.

Beautiful Dreamer, The average ping on Exede is just over 700 milliseconds. Most action games will not play well, because of the lag between you pressing an action and the game server receiving it. This latency is just a matter of physics, since the satellite is 22,500 miles from the earth's surface. You may find the games you play to work just fine with this delay, but there will be some games that won't work. Some of the servers the games use may even deny connections if the latency is higher than what they feel is acceptable.

Quake Live was the first game I found to not play at all.  It just jerks your character around a little bit and you are dead without knowing who or what is going on, while it says Connection interrupted over and over.  Borderlands 1 even converted to Steamworks doesn't work too well, when BL2 and Pre sequel work a lot better for some reason with Steamworks.  You still have to use weapons like the Ravager, Flakker, Fragnum/Herold , etc with some spread to hit the enemies sometimes.  SMGs are a little harder if the enemy doesn't hold still and is in flight.   Portal 2 made for weighted storage cube drops being hard, so everyone wanted to host and me join.  As you'll find with most games when you have sat.  (Everyone wants you to join them, unless you need direct one time help (Like killing a boss)).

Steve is right here. Latency affects some game play alot and others not so much. It really just depends on the make up of the game and the actions needed to play.

Hi I thank you for your replys to this post as I have no problem playing the game and experience no lag but the signal strength is weak thats the problem with a direct wired LAN connection or even with a router the strength doesnt change , it  was installed facing my home like 4 feet away from touching my home and also right next to a 20 year old Gardenia shrub I believe if the tech wouldve put the sat dish in an open spot away from my home the strength would be stronger. He was having a hard time himself recieving a wi fi signal on his phone then   he says your able to get online now and im now off for the weekend now .not wanting to use to much cable  He was more concern about  leaving then doing the correct job and installation. I received better connection tethering from my cell phone and a heck of alot faster loading. The reason i wanted the Ethernet connection was for the speed on Internet surfing. So again the signal strength is weak. i just want to be able to have the speed im paying for. Thanks again for your replys.

Hello Beautiful,
First, from where the Exede dish is located "mounted", does it have a clear shot to clear sky? It should not be aimed at your house or anything else if possible.

Enter this into your broswer address bar: http://192.168.100.1/?page=modemStatus

This will open your modems current status window. It will look like this, and the reading should be very similar as this is showing a good signal.

If you have different readings, post them back and we can go to the next step.

Hope it helps,
Everett

Its pointed at my home and directly in front of it sits a Gardenia shrub taller than the dish itself.  The connection itself is one bar. Is that normal?

The most important number is the RxSNR, if that is below 3 you have very low signal strength, normal is 5 or above. Don't worry about those satellites, only one will be highlighted, and to date no one has ever explained what they mean. Since your Tria has the exclamation point, I am sure that you have a bad installation. The signal cannot see through houses and bushes.  Email exedelistens@viasat.com and one of the moderators will help you get this fixed up.

Had to get that in.

What Steve said is spot on. It's a shame the installer did that, but we are all human.
I am sure Kimberly will help getting you fixed up.

Post back when the tech is done so we all know everything is OK.

Alex thank you for your post. As i scanned over the list of games i can say this much that i am able to play with anyone that's on my ally list just fine too. However again i can't enter a game on my on in the multiplayer mode. It's strange to me. I mean I'm not a dummy by all means i understand what every one has told me about all the factors. Anyways the sole reason for my purchasing the satellite was solely for gaming. I'm not upset i just wanted everything to be smooth in this digitally enhanced world we live in. Thanks again have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU!! PEACE

Hi Lab Rescue, i am sorry i hadnt respnded to you and your question, Um no the tech didn't leave me any user guide for modem. However i went and purchased a net gear 1200 router to go along with the set up. My issue with signal strength still seems to be the same. Very poor on my game where when game shows all players connection strength mine is one Lil dot. That's with a direct LAN connection and with a wifi Connection. Others in lobby connection strength range from 3 bars to 6 bars. When i use my cell phone to tether for my game it gives me 3 bars consistently. So I'm at a head scratcher on all that. Thanks to each and everyone i failed to say thank you too. You all are great people with good input. Thanks

Hi Beautiful Dreamer,
So, your cell phone is a "Hot Spot"? Are you playing the game through your cell phone from your computer? Or is it WiFi-ed through your new router to the dish?

There have been others with issues playing games like WoW, and other games. Not sure what the answer is for that sorry to say.

Might I ask where your located? Just the state and so on.

Thanks for keeping us updated.

Beautiful Dreamer, I have been told by several techies who are into heavy gaming that those "signal strength" widgets in games is not truly the signal strength, but a measure of latency, which has a big effect on the games play ability. That would explain why with your cell phone as a "Hot Spot", you would get a higher indication. Games work best with a latency of under 100 milliseconds, where satellite internet latency is over 700 milliseconds. Websites cannot measure the signal strength of your satellite connection, but latency is easily measured by pinging.

Yes Steve i understand what your saying. But i geuss i dont get why Wi-Fi hot spot would be so different between the cell hot spot and the net gear hot spot . The signal on this game is true to its nature. It shows 3 bars with tmobile and one Lil dot with satellite signal. I would think using a Wii that the signal strength with my router would be through the roof. The only difference between the two that i can visually see is using my cell my port is moderate and using the router or hardline connection (lan adapter) it's the port shows open. I dont know. Just puzzles me i suppose. Thanks again to you all. But i still think it should be through the roof on signal strength meter.

Everett, no i play on a game player not on pc. I play on a WIi 4.3. I play COD MW3 I tether solely on the cell phone hot spot. When i use the satellite on direct connection with a LAN Adapter (hardline connection) or if i wifi off the net gear router i get the same results from those two connections can't enter a game lobby at all unless i have an ally that's playing already i can join them and play. As far as where i am at i live in Louisiana. Literally the Kashatchie National Forest meets my backyard fence. Diffently rural area. I'm 26 miles from any town.

according to several tests i have ran over several different days they are severly throttling several different ports. Where the normal data passage is between 4k to 5k kbs per second the ports being throttled will show normal 3k-5k kbs and then will show as little as 4kbs on the second runthrough of the tests i ran.  Its specific ports that are being throttled, or (malfunctioning) wtfe. if your game uses the same ports that are experiencing Exede's technical difficulties (wtfe) then that might cause your problems.

Hi Beautiful Dreamer,
I never did think about the port settings, that is a great answer from Jason.

When you mentioned "have an ally" made me think your game server might be slapping you due to lag?

As for where you lived, I knew some users where having problems in one of Virginia's beams.

Hope your on the right track with Jason's idea. Post back if there is anything else.

Happy Holidays and Peace right back at ya! ☺

The where it's pointed question. (at the house)?
If you where to aim the dish like a gun, would you even plausibility, hit any thing else other than blue sky?

It's like, I can get FM as I start into the tunnel. But the father in I go the worst it gets.

If it is hitting something else, is that movable? If not, you should relocate the dish if at all possible. A short pole? Different location?

If you where to aim the dish like a gun...
Sort of like my new icon (but without the hat)...

The line of sight between the dish (2) and satellite (3) should be clear. As suggested by the image above the dish is angled at an offset from the TRIA arm.

One of my neighbors has a dish that from the road appears to be pointing at his house, but when behind the dish you can see the dish is actually set back far enough and peeking around the corner of the house while the TRIA arm gives the appearance  of pointing at the house - about the only place the installer could put it on his lot and he's working fine at last check - since he refused to have any holes drilled in his roof or siding.

P.S. Disclaimer, at least that's the way my installer described the bank shot that occurs and told me to keep an eye on that fast growing tulip polar over there...

If your router, WiFi, LAN connection gets its internet signal from the satellite service, they will all be impacted by the same bottleneck, the satellite connection. You cannot improve upon its latency, no matter what you pipe the signal through after your satellite receiver. The latency is roughly the time it takes for the signal to travel from your dish to the satellite and back (plus a little bit of processing overhead). Even at the speed of light, the speed at which satellite signal travels, the round trip is significantly longer than it is for land based connections, when you're counting milliseconds. .

If you have the option, switch to DSL or better. The improvement will be huge, and even better than the T-Mobile hot spot.
