Praise for silver ulimited plan

As some of you know, I called the unlimited plans a joke. But that was before I thought about it a bit. The price and performance was about the same as the freedom 150 I already had but it allowed me to extend the amount of data I could get , albeit at a reduced speed at times. This works for me because I don't do alot of streaming. And except for a few times the rate was about what  I would have expected from a 3G network. When I was on the freedom 150 plan the internet connection was unusable over 150 GB. Now don't get me wrong they clamped me down like that too but it would last about an hour or two then go away. And with time I figured out when the beam was busy and when it wasn't and avoided the busy times. All in all I was able to download/upload 645 GB as of today. Basically they did what they said they would do at a reasonable price. Thanks Exede!

They are supplying us with everything they've got, and it's been nice

I am still on the Freedom 150 plan because I love my 4K monitor and streams @1080p are just too good to give up.  I haven't found a 4K stream that works out using the Internet yet but those rental discs are awesome. For me to go to 480p on an unlimited plan would be like digging out that old 1990 TV again and get a converter box to watch TV....    just can't do it.  Maybe in Feb. ViaSat will have some really fast plans and then I'll see what can be done with VS-1.  If I can't get a 50mbps plan, I'll bribe an installer to put a dish for VS-2 in a place the signal can be relayed down to me from a distance.  Ahhh, the possibilities.  Think an installer will still do it for a 6-pack of beer?  Probably not.  I think they've made good friends with Ben Franklin and a couple of his twin brothers and will want to see more of them.

Like I said Craig, I don't stream much because in my opinion it's a waste of money. That being said, knock yourself out!!!!!

I do.  It's that long drive to town to return rental disc.  ;o(
If Exede had a Platinum plan (1080p) I'd jump on it.  Oh well... VS-2 is upon us and I expect plans are going to be in place that will allow everybody to get exactly what they want.  :o)

Don't they have a Redbox at your local Dollar General?

I think the term "local" needs to be clarified.  Here, there is no "local" just 30 minutes of driving on hazardous dirt roads until I get to the county road and then about 30 minutes more to get to San Jose.  There is still a video rental shop there that blows away Red Box.
It is so remote here that UPS, FedEx, DHL won't come out here, not even to the gate at the county road.  The Postal Service comes to the gate but that's it.  My closest neighbors are 2 families of Raccoons that live in one of the hay barns next to the creek. I feed them this time of year so they'll survive the winter. Now this place you call "Dollar general" may be about half-way to town, but still "out there."

I may use that in a year, right close to that at 40-60 GB per month on average.

Seriously! I know they say "unlimited" but at over 600GB in a day if you did that every day that's 18 terabytes in a month. If somebody is using that much that would have to get Viasat's attention.

They would also have to be getting pretty close to the top speed the modems and satellite can provide a single user at all times that day to use that much in one day. (Well above max advertised, by the way, but, yes I have seen it RARELY.)

Viasat would take note and, quickly. If nothing else that has to be a perfect install on a very not congested beam. Need more unlimited subscribers and, have to know what the installer did to get it that spot on to maintain that kind of speed for a solid 24 hours.

That would be 200-300 hours of HD video, not possible. About 700 large download video games downloaded also not possible in one day, never seen a game download server send downloads that fast. I'm not even calculating the number of emails or web page loads that would require - brain fry might happen first.

I am assuming that's 645 GB since adopting an Unlimited plan, not in one day. Still a lot of data for roughly 3 weeks time, give or take a few days.

Not impossible though, I have a family member who had metered cable service and, manages to cap out her 1500 GB every month.

Yes perhaps the time frame is more than a say. Still a TON of data for satellite internet to be handling.

I'm Sorry if I gave you the impression it was 600+ gb in one day. It was more like 27 days. But there were a few days where I gave the hamsters a day off. And I did not do any downloading from 7pm- 01am Monday-Saturday. And Sunday was a no download day. I switched to unlimited while i still had priority data on my freedom plan.

Just a tough crowd that likes to jest. Everyone knows it couldn’t be done in a day.

Yes misintrepreted. Still that much data in a month is a lot. Average household uses less than 200GB in a month. So you are over three times the average household :).

I am glad you are happy with the plan. But if too many users use that much data in a month, I wonder if more restrictions will show up. When Freedom first showed up i dont remember them talking about a hard cap at 150GB.

Well it just goes to show ya' that it is NOT the plan for everyone! I think what we are seeing is it may not be right for HD streaming.

Well it isn't right for HD streaming because being restricted to 480p means you will never get HD video.

But it all depends on the customer like you said. If you always bumped up against 150GB, are fine with SD video, and can get Silver for $100/month, pretty good deal. Otherwise, know all the facts before you make the jump to "unlimited".

We are getting ready to jump to unlimited.  We've been streaming with the data extender on and it is fine.  It is even decent enough on my 60 inch plasma.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact we are like a lot of folks here.  Just having the ability to stream, at any decent resolution, for more than a couple movies, is something that was not even considered 2 or three years ago.  I'm happy to drop Dtv and just use Netflix and Hulu.  Haven't tried Hulu much, since they have messed up my password, and I've been to lazy to fix it, but I will this weekend and see how it goes.

We are getting the silver for 150.  I am hoping it goes to gold for the same price around here with the new satellite.  It is frustrating that the same service is different prices in different places, and significantly so.  720 will be perfectly fine with us.

I am like everyone else here.  I would have anything else if it was offered, but since it isn't, I'm good with what we have.  It's come a long way in a few short years.

As to the OP.  What on earth can you be downloading that takes that much data and then say you don't stream much?  It doesn't make much sense.  Unless you are doing ultra high res photos and video, it seems like a ton of data.

Or maybe it is lots and lots of LOLKats.

I could deal with 720, but 480 is unacceptable to me. That isn't even HD. Technically 720 isn't HD. You might think 480 is fine for some things. I wouldn't recommend it for sports.

Also agree that Gold for $150 I would think about. Silver for $150 Is just highway robbery...lol.

Well, I have to be honest. Exede unlimited plans are a joke. I've been with exede since it was launched. Before they gave you everything they could but with a focus on Quality of service. Now QoS is no longer a factor. It's no longer much of a priority. Customer service is no longer  priority.  Exede was once commended by the FCC for their speeds on average being as advertised or higher. This is no longer the case. Maybe exede two will change this but when a company makes changes as drastically as exede has the future doesn't look to bright. $70 will get you "unlimited" subpar video which is almost unusable from 2pm to 1am after 150GB. Now if you pay $100 you can get better video quality for a shorter amount of time. For $150 you can get even better video for an even shorter amount of time. In alot of locations exede or hughesnet are the options. While exede is the better of the two, that doesn't in anyway make it good. When they opted to piss on QoS and customer service.. Well as I said the future doesn't look bright. Here's to exede one day becoming StarBand.

I guess it beats not having internet... I have not really ran into any issue yet since switching over to the unlimited plan.  It is what it is... :)
