I'm having problems with loading an online class program.  After speaking with the tech support for the class, he suggested that the satelite could be blocking the webpage I need.  Is there a way to fix this problem or will I forever be spending time at Starbucks using their free wi-fi?

Nikki, I don't think that Exede is blocking the website. What is most likely happening is that the website that you are trying to reach is ignoring your request because of the high latency that satellite internet has. Some websites will ignore requests from users because the 700+ millisecond latency is longer than the timeout the web administrator has set.

Hey Nikki, Steve is spot on here. Adding a few GB to your account to boost your speeds could help. If you can send me your info to exedelistens@viasat.com, I can make an adjustment to your account.

How do additional GB help with latency?

More often than not, the "blocking" of the page comes from being DAP and not having the needed speeds to connect to a certain program. If Nikki is perhaps DAP, the GB will boost her speed as well as the connection needed for her online class.

Nikki,

You might want to try one of the free VPN services that are available and connect to your online courses via that. Some of the more popular ones are listed at and reviewed:

Open VPN appears to receive good marks, but I use the one available to me through my work. You probably don't want to use VPN for everything but limit use to the site in question. Sometimes it helps, sometimes not but is a tad slower regardless (despite this appearing to be counter intuitive at face value that slower is better - it's really not related to speed in this case if VPN corrects it).

Is there a specific error message being displayed that might yield some further clues? I'd also contact whoever manages the site in question and point out the increased latency of satellite at around 700 milliseconds - they may be unaware of that and they may be able to make some adjustments on their end to account for it.

Nikki, follow the advice Old Labs gave you above.  If it works, you need to call tech support (don't know if the webgirls can do it from here) and have your site added to the web accelerator / client side proxy.  I had this EXACT same issue with my son's school website when I first got the service (and tying to figure out how to fix it is how I found this board!).

Very interesting, Starring Matter... another bit of the Exede puzzle being pieced together even if I have to force it into place a bit on the server side.

Hi Nikki,
I had a similar problem last semester. What operating system are you using? My new Windows 8.1 laptop with Firefox browser had a problem with both java and Adobe flash. We even tried IE and Chrome without success. Now I am using a Firefox addon called QuickJava and I have to turn the java on manually. Not even able to use flash on my android until I got a file from the archive.
