I'm trying to find information on your available plans and prices in my area: Southern Nevada County, California 95949. Unfortunately, when I enter my zip code to check for plans and prices in my area, I am informed that service is available and I should contact a dealer to find out the prices and plans.

Why is this? Why not just post the plans and their prices on your website instead of making the end user jump through hoops to find out the price?

Usually the plans and pricing is on there website and you can order directly from there, however in some cases you get that page that you have to call the local dealer to get service.  Most likely reason would be that time to time they do close beams to new sales and only leave it open to dealer sales only.  Reasoning beam could be getting on the full side or they had big promotions running and are waiting for those to run out before they do any more sales to help keep the congestion down on that beam.  You have a couple options, you can send a email to exedelistens@viasat.com with your name and contact info and a link to this post and see what they can do for you, you call or go see one of your local dealers and see what options are available for you, or you can not do any of the following and stay with who you have/ find a different provider.

I understand that and like I said usually they are there but from time to time they have to close beams to new sales for what ever reason and so they only leave it open dealer sales rather then online sales as well.  If you send the email and have one on the moderators call you they will be more then happy to see whats available in your area and the pricing.  I actually just talked to Beau the other day about what I have for options (hoping for the freedom plan) but it was not an option for me.

Jezra,

Agreed... while I can understand the logic behind limiting sales to the dealer channel, I don't understand the logic behind not showing current pricing and plan availability for a particular ZIP Code (or spot beam). Generally when I go into stores that don't have their items priced or even show their products to me, I walk away (or I pick up the item that does have a price on it since I don't like to wait in line at the checkout for a price check on aisle 4).

However, if you're seeing contact a local dealer chances are good that your choices will be limited to Exede 12-10, Exede 12-15, and Exede 12-25. If memory serves correct before pricing was hidden for my area they ran $49.99, $79.99 and $129.99 per month respectively (excluding lease fee of $10 per month and any applicable taxes). Naturally there may be some other promotions for new customers.

I agree they should show the plans at least and say if you want it you will have to call the dealer. I guess like you said if you walk in to a store and the item is not priced or they wont show it to you, you leave.  Maybe that's the point of that is to only get the sales from the people that actually take the time to contact the dealer to get all of the information because the beam is getting full or temporally closed to new sales for what ever reason...Just speculation

If you go here and enter your zip code in the search box if any plans are available for your area it will allow you to see the prices and conditions..

Unfortunately, right now your zip code is closed for new customers....this means the beam is full..

My knowledge of California geography is limited and the Exede beam maps are not very detailed. But, it looks like Grass Valley may be in Beam 364 which is a "Classic" promotion area. Classic plans are 10 G for 49.99/month, 15G for 79.99 or 25 G for 129.99. All plans have an added 9.99 per month lease fee. In Beam 364 there is currently no up-front cost. You could be in one of the few areas of the country that can not get Exede at all. (the eastern half of CA north of Sacramento) If you can get in touch with a local dealer or one of the mods and give them your exact address, they should be able to verify the accuracy of what I have told you. Good luck.

Jezra: Usually you can see plans and pricing by typing in your Zip, but in areas where beams are full, you may only be able to buy through a local dealer, which is why you got that message. You are in an Exede 5 beam and you can find your local dealers by clicking here: http://www.exede.com/internet-packages-pricing/find-a-local-dealer

Alex, the last time I tried to contact a dealer, I never received a response. If the prices were on the website as they should be, this wouldn't be an issue. Yesterday I emailed exedelistens@viasat and I have not yet received a response.

Once again, this is about the lack of information on the website. A nice simple page of "here is a list of our plans and prices, please enter you zip code to see which plans are available in your area" is all that is needed.

"Window shopping" is a good description.  My beam was closed two years.  Now it says contact dealer.  Exede.com, says available, just contact dealer, no plans or pricing.  Wildblue.com says "Due to strong demand, new installations in your area have been suspended." But has a link for http://www.wildblue.com/options/comparison-chart , with no pricing.

If a person is just window shopping for a product, I wouldn't be too enthused about calling or emailing.  Calling, then they have your phone number, emailing, same thing (of course could use disposable).  Both options take some time.  Makes more sense to just list the packages and prices on the site.

That's kind of the point is that it takes time and most people are not going to do it hence the beam is closed to new sales except from local dealers

Except of course that's not the point in Jezra's case. Go to exede.com and you're greeted with:

"High Speed Internet Available where you live... Enter your ZIP Code for offers in your area!" as well as a teaser "MegaDeal".

Now enter his ZIP Code provided above and you are greeted with:

"Great News! Exede is available through your local dealer."... "Click to View Dealers" along with another "let's get ready to bundle with DirecTV" teaser.

First rule from sales and marketing 101... if you've got a product to offer, let people know what it is and how much it costs. Dissuading people from purchasing a product based on their willingness to undergo what could be turn out to be "high pressure" sales tactics or additional fine print isn't exactly a brilliant marketing strategy. Never turn a potential customer away by giving the impression that there are some catches associated with that availability.

If the beam is closed to the ZIP code entered, a simple "We're sorry, Exede is not currently available in your area" would suffice.

Now go to wildblue.com and jump through the same as barq suggests and you receive an entirely different scenario. It's not even clear whether that only applies to Wildblue plans since when clicking on the plan comparison link you receive Exede plan comparisons. Or is it simply the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing? Not exactly confidence inspiring either way when receiving conflicting information.

Offhand from his profile it would appear Jezra is looking to switch from HughesNet and his shopping experience so far provides him little incentive to do so (but then the Hughesnet experience having just gone through it is worse insisting on not simply a ZIP code but address also). The folks from marketing (or at least they used to) run this forum and Jezra has simply provided them with a critique of their marketing strategy. First impressions count...

Hopefully, Jim's response (a somewhat authoritative source) answers his original question.

Old Labs, after "if you've got a product to offer, let people know what it is and how much it costs" I would add, "and then make it easy for people to exchange money for the product"... but that is just me. :)

Jezra - What would be interesting is if you contacted ALL of the dealers and see if their pricing varied.  I wouldn't think the monthly cost would, but maybe the install price?  Curious.  Please post back here if you see anything interesting.

I'm not sure why this marked "solved", the initial issue of the plans and pricing not being available on the website is still valid; and it is currently unknown if Exede is available in my area (unless I contact a dealer).

On a side note, it has been 2 days since I have email exedelistens@viasat to ask about prices in my area and they have not responded to me.

jezra, I'm sorry for the confusion and frustration. The thread is marked solved because the correct answer was given - you will indeed need to contact a local dealer. I've received your email and will get you some basic information as well as a few local dealers you can reach out to.

I apologize that this has been a hassle for you.

More correct response would be "not planned" instead of "solved".  Request made "please put your plan pricing on your website", response "request denied", so "solved" doesn't quite fit when the response wasn't "sure, no problem".

Dumb question, but long as I can remember, any that I've heard, all same named plans are the same price/caps whether Exede 5 or 12, correct?  Here at least any dealer, neighbor, anything I've heard they've all priced the same.  My area, was closed as I said, now open, but no special plans have been available.  Same basic plans since the free zone was added and basic package was upped from 7.5GB to 10.  Seems "odd" not to just list them, and it would not be difficult in the slightest.  Just the disclaimer that you need to contact a dealer to get them, and that installation prices may vary (as it always did anyway for special installations, and was often mentioned in the fine print or elsewhere).  Many people don't want the sales pitch, don't want to give out contact info (which could result in unwanted sales contact, not that Exede does that, but someone not familiar with the company may think that).

barg_, when something is submitted as a Problem versus an Idea, the
status options are different. I agree that the wording is a bit
confusing and doesn't always fit.

You are correct in regards to pricing. The price does not vary from one location to another. There is a general overview of our Classic plans at http://www.wildblue.com/options/comparison-chart but we do not currently have a list of all plans complete with pricing, as the plans themselves do vary by region.

They "EXEDE mods" do that a lot to let the thread just die off. I'm on your side here this is not "solved" ... that's why I don't post here very often nothing gets answered just a few "so called chaps" get to rank up.

I think what is not being said here by the reps speaks volumes....since many (most) beams are full, or near full capacity, WB/Exede has decided to farm out all openings and pricing options to their authorized dealers...this allows the dealers to maintain a waiting list for an opening instead of WB/Exede, and with plans and pricing changing rapidly it puts the dealer in place to provide potential customers with the latest information instead of keeping those plans posted on the internet.

And, all installations do not cost the same....pole mount needed?  other problems with installation?  Only a dealer can make those assessments after a site visit...

The logical thing to do is follow directions and call an authorized dealer and get accurate information and get on a wait list, if needed.

This is the key statement on WB/Exede's internet statement:

These packages and pricing are offered by participating retailers only.

Actually there is no "waiting list." When you call the local dealer he can sell to you in these beams. I think ViaSat is trying to "slow" growth in these beams without hurting the local dealers.

Jim, not all beams have a waiting list, but many do...especially in those areas serviced by the original satellites with the old original Wildblue plans that are now shared with the augmented Exede-5 plans...The old original Wildblue plans are not available any more but the beams still have many older customers with those plans and sharing bandwidth with the newer Exede-5 customers.

I think Exede-12 beams that are not full, or near full, will allow customers to enter their zip code and be told what plans are available.

"Answered" would probably be a more appropriate disposition than "Solved".....IMHO....☺☺☺

It's a limitation of the software. This was posted as a Problem, not as a Question, so my options for setting the status are limited to Problem responses. Agreed, though.
