In what manner did you check your usage?

Depending on the "shape" of your Network there are potentially many usage paths.

As an example, my Router has a number of optional internal services that can be enabled. Those services, if enabled, can use considerable data and it would not show up at any of the normal "measuring points" because it IS at the router level .. just in front of the Modem.

Further, Router settings and security will enter into the 'usage path equation':

>Is WPS disabled? (has know vulnerabilities)<

>Are ALL Guest Accounts disabled?<

>Has the Routers GUI's access username and password been changed from the default and only known to a single designated user?<

>Have ALL wireless frequencies (2.4GHZ or 2.4/5.0 GHZ or 2.4/5.0 + secondary 5.0 depending on Router) ALL have had wireless encryption enabled to at least the level of WPA2-PSK [AES]?<

>Has the Router had its firmware manually updated the latest release?< (this is particularly important in certain Netgear, Linksys and Cisco brands that have has known vulnerabilities<

>What is the 'character" of your usage download/upload ratio?<

Some changes have been introduced in both software and drivers over the last few months.

AVG Antivirus now collects and 'shares' data with its publisher. (read increased upload)

Some Nvidia video card/chip drivers now also collect and share user data. (more upload)

Win10 (unless on a declared wireless connection will not only auto-update but will also collect and share "telemetry" with Microsoft. This will result in massive download and upload activity.

Currently there is a Update Roll-Up ( KB4015217) that not only is very large but for many users is starting/stopping/restarting. In addition to that there is now being rolled out the Creators Build version of Win10 and that will be a very large update as it is a complete OS rewrite.

There are numerous places for data to 'leak" and few users have a true and accurate picture of all of the potential connection paths.

It seems it is easier to just accuse their ISP of stealing data.

Hi Bill, please allow us to review your account and verify your data consumption based on your daily traffic. We can find out which category is consuming the majority of your data. Please send us your account and contact info to exedelistens@viasat.com.

If you continue to think Exede is stealing your data then you will never figure out what is really causing the usage.   Every ISP..every ISP...every ISP is accused of stealing data from a small number of their customers. But if you are convinced they are committing theft then you will not look elsewhere for your problem.

I was at 80% usage of 10G this a.m. with 1 billing cycle day left.... Downloaded photos which I rarely do...My usage went to 91% within a couple of hours. I don't watch movies or listen or download music, nor do I open sites that will flood your computer with corrupted ads whenever possible. I pretty much live in fear of having the internet! We also have to notify the entire world if we switch to another provider. I am burned out from exede/viastat since my troubles from 2013. At some point, I hope this company ends up in a court of law for their mistreatment of the paying customers. I see praises now and then, but the complaints phenomenally outweigh these minimal praises! Yes!!!

I've heard from the grapevine that there is going to be a class action lawsuit starting soon because they're overselling their service causing very slow speeds during 5pm to 2am when most people have extremely slow speeds or can't even get online.

That's why I'm logging my internet speeds 3 times a day because if there is a class action lawsuit then I want in to get some of my money back which I paid for poor service they're supplying.

Your grapevine is full of sour grapes and raisins.  You and everybody else signed up and agreed no class action, just arbitration, and not as a group either.

You mean this forum that was created for people to air their complaints has more complaints?  Shocking!

SO!!! my ma and i came to a conculsion that THEY are using there OWN data... BUT!!! yet they tend to complain about it and say they want a discount onto there internet bill and so on... BUT ALSO!!! they WANT to get free gbs also... so they WONT have to pay so much for the internet bill that THEY are complaining about there data usage. which is ACTUALLY themselves who is using it THEN complain -.- idk... imma just saying THAT could be possible :/

It's basically human nature.  People are much more likely to voice their disappointment when something isn't to their satisfaction than they are to voice their praise when it is.  If someone is having a perceived problem, their chances of saying so, or complaining, are good, yet when something is perceived to be working the way it should and they are fine with it or don't even think about it, chances are they aren't going to create a praise post.

If there weren't a lot more complaint posts than praise posts I would actually start to think the forum was "fixed."

Tirzy,

Actually, I was responding to Jim16, but I do agree with your assessment that if the data was used it's almost assured that the customer actually used it, whether they know it or not, and whether they want to believe it or not.  And it's those that absolutely will not accept that that could be true that demand some type of discount and/or a replacement of their data.

I have the competition, but I see those types of complaints on their boards all the time, too.  So and so is stealing my data!  No, they aren't.  LOL.  I have yet to see, at least in my time on the boards, a legitimate instance of data being depleted that wasn't being used by the user's system in some way.  And those of use who have been around long enough tend to know the most common culprits, whereas the users in question may not.

People always complain about date usage. But I work for a small FTTH and Cable ISP without data caps. I can take a look at anyone's network and you would be surprised if how much data people in just 1 day I see an average of 2GB-9GB a day I'm pretty sure that they aren't stealing your data.

do the hughesnet good ole lan cable unplug test :). wait until you are in late nite free zone (if you have one) then just unplug the lan cable from the back of the modem(leaveing it powered on) this cuts out any activity you would have on your end. log into your dashboard on your cellphone data or public wifi and just refresh it every so often (after free zone is over of course), if you have any major useage then congrats it is not on your end (note: there will be some small overhead useage regardless) if no useage occurs, then track it down from the router next (change all passwords), and so on with each device. useage does happen like this sometimes but 90 percent of the time you will track it back to one of the devices or router.
