Out of data again

We moved up to Liberty Pass 18 this month and have used it up with 16 days to go. I feel like the struggling our devices do to load things out here in the country eats data. Is it normal for 3 people who are gone 8-4 five days per week can't stay under 18??

It is possible, sadly, if you watch any type of video like YouTube, vimeo, movies (amazon/netflix) etc. Also, updates to computers and mobile devices usually equate to many 100s of mbs+. 18 gb of data divided by 3 people is only about 200 MB a day. Divide that by the number of devices and the numbers become ridiculous.

Exede is not for modern day users. It's stone-age-internet for desperate people.

Agree with David, you should read the data conversation or use a real broadband company if you are able.

There's an older, archived thread (and hence difficult to locate) that hits most of the major recommendations at:

https://community.exede.com/exede/topics/data-usage-tips

Although dated, most remain valid. Recommendations regarding FlashBlock have switched to Flash Control to counter the negative data usage impact of HTML5 media, which is becoming increasingly popular on web sites (unfortunately Flash Control is only available for Firefox). There's also a Windows 8.x specific thread at:

https://community.exede.com/exede/topics/some-tips-on-windows-8-data-usage

Many of the recommendations also apply to Windows 10 but there are some more recent exchanges regarding Windows 10 specifics that are easier to locate by searching. The major change is to ensure you've configured metered mode if available to lessen the impact of Microsoft's new automatic update strategy (requires that you use a wireless connection from your computer).

Although most of these recommendations were written to avoid being dapped on the classic plans, they are equally effective for those who want to maximize/extend use of their priority data before the Liberty Pass kicks in.

While these recommendations are specific to Windows, the general recommendations regarding preventing/deferring automatic updates, using an ad blocker and using a flash blocker apply to other operating systems (there are few specifics on how to go about doing that to be found here). Most are aimed at preventing background usage of your data that most are unaware of. It's no longer a simple matter of what you do, but rather that which is being done on your behalf to make your Internet experience more "enjoyable" .

Hello Ann, to bounce off what Old Labs suggested above, you can email us at exedelistens@viasat.com and we can look and see where your data went towards this month. One thing that's been the case this past month has been IOS 9 for apple devices. If you have any Apple devices, there's a very strong possibility that's where everything went towards. I'll be more than happy to look for you

We have 4 Apple devices. Was it the update that pulled data? We don't watch movies online but all 3 of us watch clips.

If you haven't already done so, you need to either call or send and an email to exedelistens@viasat.com and include your account and contact information to get that information. This forum is powered by GetSatisfaction, a third party, and the moderators here don't know your account - all they know is your name and need to verify you are who you say you are.            (Edited spelling/grammar)

There's a strong possibility. With each major IOS update a lot of times the apps do an automatic update shortly after with little to no visible difference. If you email us at exedelistens@viasat.com with your account information I can take a look for you to see if for sure that's what caused it

I think I have found the problem. I found an article someone posted about Apple Icloud. Shut down everything dealing with the Apple iCloud program. It constantly uses data in the background without your knowledge. I closed everything down on our iPhones and our PCs and now we're back to normal usage, for now.....

I can run a Data analysis for you if no one has yet. Just send me an email to david@lakecountrysat.com along with your MAC address found on the bottom of your modem or the phone number associated with your account.
