So where is your favorite place to get king cake from?

I had one from Walmart a few weeks ago and it was garbage. It was supposed to be cream cheese filled and there was no filling! Instead it was just wet on the bottom.

Today I had a few slices of apple filled king cake from Hi-Do in Terrytown and it was fantastic!

That's for the specialty shapes. Us locals just get the round king cakes.

Beware the choking hazard (the plastic baby) traditionally placed in the cake in some circles (not sure if it's still done but then again neither are metal lawn darts) - it means you not only get to be king for a day but also have to buy next year's cake. The one time I had it at work, I was the prize winner.

Next year's king cake? No, it means you get to buy the next king cake. One king cake a year is never enough!

Back when I was a kid they still put the baby in king cakes. One day an old lady choked the baby and died. Since then, the baby comes outside of the king cake and it's the customers responsibility to put it in.

That's what I figured nowadays... some assembly required. Insert baby at your own risk. Next up a discussion of beads.

Gotta be Dong Phuong King Cake. Since they came back after Katrina, two years ago, they have been the best. Worth the shipping to have one.

As for beads, I still haven't topped my 1989 record of two lawn and leaf bags full of them but, then, at my age, I don't have the um, bits to do that anymore. Got a chalice in Shreve off of Crew of Gemini though so not bad. Put 1.00 in a penny slot, won 60.00 at El Dorado, so cool Mardi Gras this year. By the way, the King Cake at Magraritaville was lousy so, I didn't gamble there. El Dorado was better so, they got a bit of my cash. :) Still came out 25.00 ahead overall so not too bad. :)

I'm tempted to order a Dong Phuong king cake just so I won't have to go down there and stand in line. The only bad part is I won't get it until after mardi gras.

Still worth it, give them a call. Have your own Mardi Gras night at home - beads are cheap at Party City. :)
