I must say that I have had nothing but frustration with this company.  Every month I get a warning from them telling me that my usage is in the danger stage, but when I look into my account it is at about 43% used, I have inquired about that notice and of course am given the "pat" answer of "the charges are from media usage, Facebook, etc, etc, etc,  I use face book about once a week, on iPad for about 20min, I don't stream videos, I don't search stuff, but yet I end up buying more bytes to keep my internet going.  If we have our nephew and niece come to visit, college student and college football coach, we are way over our usage, and end up paying anywhere from 600 to 800 a month for internet.  Got Verizon DSL capabilities but cannot use them with Satellite internet.  I also learned that if you leave unsatisfactory comments on here, they will delete them.  So sad.  Maybe Hillary owns this company too.

 Hello Betsy,

I definitely understand your concerns, a large part of unknown consumption in most cases is Updates, Storage and Communication. Please send us your account and contact info to exedelistens@viasat.com so we can take a further peek into your data usage and provide more answers for you.

If you are using Windows 10 there are a few steps that need to be done on Satellite internet to reduce data usage.

1) Turn Live Tiles Off for all your apps and in the settings (Microsoft has step by step guide if you google "How to turn Live Tiles off" you should see the links).

2) If you use iCloud app that runs in the background make sure that only Contacts and Bookmarks are selected on your UI (can be accessed by right clicking on the iCloud icon in your Hidden Icons area of taskbar). NOTE: in the Bookmarks section do NOT have a check mark in Internet Explorer. There is a known glitch that can cause it to use up to 2 gigs an hour- Chrome and Mozilla don't have the issue.

3) It is better to have a Wi-Fi connection through a router so in the Windows settings you can set it to a "Metered Connection". This way Windows it self tries to minimize any background apps from using up extra data. Walmart has many routers that work great with Exede.

4) On a "Metered Connection" set Windows Updates to let you decide when to install (Windows on  a metered connection won't automatically check for updates so remember to check manually every once in a while (use your free zone- if you have one, or wait till before your data reset and update on that date monthly).

Hope this helps some.

FWIW, on a Windows 10 Home metered connection it only lets you specify when to install and doesn't govern when the updates are downloaded - the only real way to do that with Windows 10 Home is with some inventive registry hacks and.or blocking of the Windows update site.

However, the Pro and Enterprise versions do allow a way to defer them (but not permanently).

Odd, I have never had mine auto download. When i go to Updates it just has the button to "download"  or a message pops up saying"Downloads will start when you are on an unrestricted access" or some such. I'm running Win 10 Home on both my PCs.

Same here. It works well, but being on the Liberty Plan, I usually wait until late in my cycle so I have decent speeds for most of the month. when I can, I try to take my laptop to work or to the  library and use that "free" data for the big updates.

Sorry, that should have read Windows 10 Home non-metered (typically a wired ethernet connection which cannot be declared as metered).
