Tablets are known to consume large amounts of data. They use cloud storage since the have limited on board storage themselves. Also, many of the app updates will only download(in the background) while on WiFi. These updates often happen without user intervention.

Im just another customer, but can say I have seen this before.
their data tracking is off as several others are having the same issues the last months.  mine too reports usage that is just not possible in our place.
if your into the first 30 days and you do not like it? try calling them until you get a person that will listen to you [that might take a few calls to find them]
I have better luck calling them on a weekday as weekends most senior staff are probably off the two days.
several years ago the tracker was off entirely, So we surfed without a cause. ;)
in recent months their tracker is showing excessive data flowing to us. and that is our loss - and they try to sell you a bigger plan [do not fall for that]
the same problem is on larger plans as well.
in time they will fix this.

"several"  ?  more like several 100+ I think that the thing that really ticks people off is that it is obvesly a problem on their end and they wanna belittle the customers and talk to them like they are stupid and ask them to purchase more data when it will just burn through it also and refuse to fix it or reset the data back to what it should be, instead they will "give" you 1 or 2 gig to go away quietly, I want the full data reset BUT the reason they will not do this is because it would do no good and would burn through it as well.

Go to apps and turn off auto updates, do it on phone also. Then only update when you are Wi-Fi somewhere else.

I would like to add that you need to be very careful about the security of that other wifi connection.  Often, the other wifi connection you might use is a public wifi hotspot and those are notorious for harboring malware.

we are careful about "where" we update.
but never ever update on our limited network is good advice.

I even do this on my old Iphone 4S, I have to pick and choose my updates accordingly b/c that thing does not have a lot of "what do you call it again?" left

When they first set you up the modem updates its software and can eat a lot of data. Keep tracking. Hopefully it will get better.

Turn off auto updates on the tablet. Make sure it didn't do an OS update. That can eat 1GB+. If Google account make sure it is not doing a cloud backup. Like was saud earlier, mobile device will eat data when connected to WiFi, but not when on a mobile data plan. Once connected my mobile device to WiFi and it ate 0.5GB in about 30 minutes before I figured what it was doing. It was backing up pictures videos, etc.

I agree with others. My tablet can easily use 1-1.5 GB in a couple of hours if I connect it to wifi - I don't do that at home. Despite poor cell signal, that's all it gets at home. I use public wifi to update it and, rarely connect it at all to my home wifi.

I do connect my phone BUT, with background app refresh and, auto updates OFF. I will manually update an app I need over home wifi, if I need that app right ten, otherwise, phone updates can wait for public wifi too.

Hi Anita,

It's highly likely it's a result of what many are suggesting here with automatic updates on the tablet. I can certainly look into this for you and confirm if this is the case. Please email me at exedelistens@viasat.com and I can take a look

Hopefully you know and understand that anytime any computer is connected to the internet it is using data. Even when you aren't actively using it. Even after you've walked away from it and haven't touched it at all.

Other than a small handful of months, I lived comfortably within my 12GB plan. But then I've taken lots of steps to minimize unseen data usage. I even turn the WiFi off when I walk away from my laptop.

So true, with two computers ALWAYS connected, I use about 200MB per day if no one touches either computer, add my cell phone if I'm home all day, that's another 100 MB or so. Add what we actively use and, it comes to just over 1 GB per day on average for my house. Some days a bit more, some a bit less but, I do push pretty close to my 50 GB every month. That's without ever connecting my tablet, add that and either I go over, or I have to cut usage elsewhere.
