not getting 30mbps

Got Unlimited Gold yesterday but only getting 19 down?!? I called tech support last night and was told it was network congestion as it was 9pm EST. I then called back at 9am EST and was told that I won't actually get 30, it's up to 30???

I spoke with level 1, for 20 minutes. She tried to blame the weather? Clear skies?
Level 2 for 30 minutes. She said it hadn't been 24 hours yet??? Huh? Then she said doing back to back download test would lower my throughput????
Level 3 said point blank, no one is getting 30 now. It's not gonna be fixed to VIA2 goes online.

My install tech said he's seen 40?

What the hell did I sign up for? AT least it's unlimited.

Any advice? Anyone getting 30 or over?

First, speeds are UP TO, meaning at times you will see 30 Mbps but not all of the time. Beam utilization as well as your connected device and, the server you are receiving data from all have an effect.

Second, 19 Mbps is very good speed, more than sufficient for any activity online except streaming in 4K, which your plan does not permit anyway.

Thanks for the reply.

yeah, all ISP's label the plans up to, but in reality if they say 15, you'll get 20ish, if they say 25, you'll get 30 ish. The ISP's never OVER label the throughput.

You can't sell me 30 and I never get more than 19. That's just begging for negative reviews.

I'm in zip code 33547, South east Florida. Nor sure if my "beam" is really congested or not.

I came from 15 mbps hughes.net (where I actually got 26mbps) but capped at 50GB.

I want my cake and to eat it too I guess.

Hughesnet won't give you unlimited. But I have to ask, is it that much different between 19 and 30? I mean what problems is the 'slow" speed of 19 really causing? I know you say you pay for up to 30, but you also are paying for unlimited data, which is much, much more important.

I think people are obsessed with speed tests.  I think the only way to tell if you're getting 19 or 30 is if you run a speed test.  I have a 12mbs plan and stream on my 46" TV everyday and could care less what my speed test shows.  I've seen over 12 and under 2 and have never had an issue with streaming.  You're not going to get much sympathy here because of your measly 19mbs speed. Just enjoy your internet!

Well going from FIOS to satellite internet is like going from a Cadillac to an economy car. They both will get you where you need to go, but it's a much more pleasurable journey in the Cadillac.

Lol, I'd say FIOS is like a Cadillac and satellite is like walking, you can clearly get things done faster and easier in the car, you can still get around by walking, but it'll be so slow and tedious you'll probably give up before long.  Thankfully with the new data plans, I no longer have to "walk" as much.  And with the coming satellites more people should be able to relax when using the internet and trust stuff will load.

Not trying to be petty and I am enjoying unlimited internet. I wish they would have sold package as Unlimited Gold, with streamimg up to 720p.

They are the ones who threw out 30mbps, not me. Im a person of principal, ie over 40, so if you yell me 30 you deliver 30.

I wonder if the unlimited data is going to be more of the same. Caveat emptor I guess.

Sounds like you should move a mile down the road.

Haha, well played. I was thinking "scooter", but it was too fast for the joke. And yes, there are days when I consider leaving my secluded 15 acre property and moving back to a 1/4 acre lot in the suburbs so I could have fiber.

Maybe you could setup some sort of directional antenna between your house and your friends.  Get an antenna high enough in the air and it should't be a problem to share a network with him.

I used to experiment with antennas like that and it is pretty interesting.

Here is the type of antenna I was referring to.

https://www.ebay.com/p/Antenna-World-G2421-Directional-Compact-WiFi-Parabolic-Grid/2119824470?iid=19...

Its pretty neat stuff.  I used to use this to connect to wifi from a campground down the road from me.  Disclaimer, I wasn't stealing anything.  It was a campground that sold wifi to their customers.  I used it to connect to their wifi and then would buy service.

Needless to say, I've been unhappy with AT&T DSL for a long time now.

If you and your friend both had these antenna's pointed at each other, you may be able to make a really nice little network.

I thought about it, I'm 2 miles away from the border where the fiber ends (4 miles diagonally from my buddy). Wonder how much 2 miles of fiber would cost FIOS?

The biggest problem is the 50 ft oak trees covering the landscape between us (no line of sight), also it would be a violation of his TOS to share service.

Let’s be honest here. Exede advertises 25 and 30 Mbps plans because it makes their service look like it’s actually meeting the definition of broadband. While we that have used the service for years know that with the exception of that one Sunday morning at 2 AM when most of the country was covered in a blizzard and without power, we rarely get 75% of that number. Never during prime time. Does that mean it’s not a quality service? Absolutely not. Exede works and mostly works at acceptable levels with real world use.

Not sure why people are trying to defend exede here. Also why the personal jabs? This post was made to complain. Its a problem post, created to advise those consumers considering this product of possible issues.

Im not upset about the speed. I love the unlimited aspect. As a former broadband service technician I disaprove of support agents jumping to the up to excuse before even troubleshooting. And I whole heartedly disagree that "up to's" are generally inflated. Ive always gotten more than the quoted speed and I fully expect too when the new sat is fully operational.

Just say "our beams are over populated causing congestion and we jumped the gun selling unlimited before getting viasat2 functional." I can respect that.

It's the nature of social media these days, chuck. Some stems from frustration with the repetitive nature of some of the "complaints/problems" - it's like Groundhog Day in here sometimes - yet another time loop iteration ;)

More often it the perceived tone of a post that sets it off... and a hockey game breaks out.

There's nothing personal in it in most cases, I don't think - when it is you'll know it - there was a particular nasty one a week or so ago.

"This post was made to complain"
I think that is the issue.  This is a help forum and it has become just a place to vent and throw tantrums.  I guess some of us are getting tired of it.  I don't think any of us meant to jump on you, but 19mbs speeds are great and should not have warranted a post to complain.

You could really help if you would post your video speeds on the Gold plan.  Please use this speed test, it shows the speed you are getting when you stream video...

Actually within the context, I took that to be a typo which should have probably read "This post was not made to complain",  but as always I could be wrong... it reads much differently in that context.

If nothing else, life around here isn't boring.

You're right. I was just excited about the prospect of >30.
I had exede for 2 years and I left when they rolled out 25 as it wasnt available for existing customers. I was paying for 12 and always getting 15.

I never had any issues with the speed, just the soft cap.

Im really excited about the unlimited aspect as I go through a lot of data (downloading my Nintendo games ;) )

Just disappointed that it wasn't the golden goose I envisioned.

Thanks for all the replies, havent had this lively a forum conversation in a while.

I'll try, but I don't stream, I download 4k blurays and 50GB games.

Thats kind of why I'd like >30, cuts d/l time in half.
