Norton Updates, Windows Updates throttled down

This is my first post on this forum because this was the first time I've had a problem like this since signing up with Exede about 18 months ago.  Nearly every month, toward the end of the cycle, I exceed my data limits and speeds slow down, but that has not been a problem as far as keeping Norton Anti-virus protection or Windows updated - until now.  Has something changed?  Why won't my Norton or Windows update?  The webpage to update loads and then flips to "Webpage is unavailable" like someone is hitting a switch to prevent updates from happening.

I am aware that both programs can be updated after midnight and I will do that, BUT what changed?

Elizabeth,

You don't mention when and assume now means now. Today, I've been noticing a few sporadic issues like this myself but am chalking them up to temporary ghosts in the machine that will likely resolve themselves - perhaps due to higher than normal network traffic over the holiday weekend.

Even during the entire LNFZ this AM congestion was apparent throughout the entire 5 hours, when it typically breaks loose between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM - perhaps everyone's playing with their new toys.

P.S. Then again you seem to indicate that you've gone over your limit. in which case you've been dapped and will be on slower speeds to begin with. That coupled with added congestion would be enough top cause that type of generic error. You may have to wait until the LNFZ for any relief and success.

Hi Lab, Yes, it was today that I noticed my Norton hadn't updated in 4 days.  Naturally, I contacted Norton for support and gave them remote access to my computer.  In an effort to regain Norton updates so I could have current virus protection, they removed my anti-virus software.  When they attempted to download the Norton package, it began downloading and within a second or two, it flipped to "Webpage not available".  Apparently, the failure of Norton and Windows to update was due to the throttling down of data.  Prior to all of this, I was still able to surf the web, use social media and use the internet as usual, but pages loaded slightly slower.  This is the one thing about Exede that had set them apart from other satellite providers.  Now, because Norton had removed my anti-virus program, I now need to download the 800,000 MB, which will burn through the extra gig I bought.  Boo.

Based on other reports here and elsewhere, it's probably safe to assume that Viasat might be tinkering with priorities established for those who are dapped. Since both of your updates would fall into the category of file downloads, you may be a victim of the new policies, but that's just a wild guess. Perhaps a moderator can yield more insight.

So, that means because my computer won't be able to download updates, I'll need to buy more data each month when I reach my cap OR force myself to stay awake to make use of the LFNZ.  Oh bugger.

Not necessarily, as I said I'm seeing some strange stuff today - just now had a "secure connection failure" on this very site and have been seeing them sporadically today along with other generic errors elsewhere.

One more thing.  I just received a telephone call from 206-424-8309 from a fellow named "James" who said he was from Norton and had just seen my post about the trouble I was having with updates.  He asked me if the problems have been resolved and if my computer was working right.  I said it was fixed and then he asked me if he could call me next month to be sure my computer was still working right as a service to Norton.  Hmmmm.  "What is your last name James and a number I can reach you at and I'll call you".  "James" said that was impossible because his was a survey number, then he hung up.  How did he get my phone number and why was he monitoring posts on this forum?  Could he possibly have been an Exede representative?  Or is he a scammer trying to get access to my computer like Whitepages says?

This just keeps getting better and better.

Also it sounds like you're just about able to make it through the month without exceeding your data limit. Take a look at:

https://community.exede.com/exede/topics/data-usage-tips

to see if you can make some additional adjustments.

In addition if using windows 8.x, see my recent experience with it at the bottom of this thread:

https://community.exede.com/exede/topics/metered-connection

P.S. I used to get those scam phone calls all the time and now it's very rare. Rather than slamming the phone down on them I finally got around to playing along with them by acting dumb and dumber - they got so frustrated they eventually hung up and I repeated it on each subsequent call - eventually I think the game wound up placing me on their own do not call list since I was wasting too much of their time.

Hi Elizabeth,
My name is James, I'm with the IRS, and I'm here to help you.

Needless to say, anyone who has info from this forum post, and supposedly is associated with Norton Security Systems, and on top of that, calling you on a weekend! Can not be right!

Back to your original issue: Have you tried opening the update sites in a different browser? Instead of IE, try Chrome, or FireFox, and so on.

When you say the webpage starts to load, then flips to unavailable. Did you see the webpage for a second? Did you try to refresh it? Do you have any internet security program running inside of the browser? Have you added any browser related add on's lately?

Are you noticing any other offline computer related issues. Like some programs don't want to load properly? Any that will not open at all?

There is a program called TuneUp Utility's. http://www.tune-up.com/download/
They offer a free download and usage for 30 days. You might give it a try and let it tweak your system while it looks for out of whack system settings.

One other is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware  : https://www.malwarebytes.org/
You might have a bug and this is a good program without all the overpowering issues of Norton. Do a scan, see what it finds.

I have not used Norton since the early 90's. It got to be a memory hog and a over bearing security issue. It took a crowbar and 2 Pringles cans to get it uninstalled.

I hate when a program tells me I don't have the rights to delete a file. I am the god of my black box and will do a safe boot to kill the intruders.

Hope it helps or gives you some new ideas on a fix.

Computer is fine, nothing strange, just needed to buy more data, like I said.

James was a scammer who read my post on THIS FORUM.  He lied and said he was from Norton forgetting he had read my post on EXEDE about Norton.

Hi Elizabeth,
If your Gig's where gone and that was the cause of the slooow lag that cause the pages not to load, you could ask for some of the free Gig's Exede is offing now.

Email Kimberly or one of the other K Girls at exedelistens@viasat.com and ask for some free Gig's. they can give you 1 to 5 at a time up to a limit of 30 Gig's.

As for James, I think I remember seeing a few post offering to help people if they would contact him and provide account information. SPAM is everywhere and will invade your soul if allowed. Glad you caught it and posted a warning to help everyone else.

Thanks for your help and I hope you get your issues resolved.

Hi Elizabeth,
OK, i missed that post about needing to buy more Gigs to do the Norton download.

Tell you what, go ahead and purchase a Gig or 2 to help you at the moment and if Kimberly or one of the other reps will not reimburse you with free Gig's and reverse the charges, I will pay for them.

Kimberly is my main goto person and I'm sure it can be done. She will be the one who gets your account info, not me. But I will pay if Exede doesn't.

I promise. Please hold it to 2 Gig's I am retired.

Happy Holidays Elizabeth,
Everett

That is very generous of you!  Hoping Exede can get me another gig or two as the download to get norton back on pushed my use back near 97%.  I'll never make it to the 4th without losing update ability again.

Hi Elizabeth,

Let me take a look at your account and check your status.  If you are dapped, that may be the reason you are having issues downloading the Norton software.  Please send me an email to exedelistens@viasat.com with your account and contact information.  I will go from there.

Thank you Karmin!  I have just sent you an email.  Had to buy another gig to get it downloaded yesterday.  Didn't want to be without virus protection.

Some exede customers are having DAP troubles, sounds like you are. I am one who is not, but I know what's going on. Exedes DAP ha begun to filter too many things like it did before in August 2014... Hopefully they'll tweak it again like they did in September of 2014, except this time for affected customers. You'd be able to download your windows and Norton updates if they did this, but at a considerably reduced rate of course (which is better than nothing).
