New silver plan

This might run long, but wanted to tell you my story. I just upgraded from the Liberty 50 plan to the silver 25 with “unlimited” 150 gs. This was a no brainer for us. Yes, I know we will only have 480p and that is not great BUT how exciting that we have soooo much more data than ever before and for the same price! Is our satellite as fast or truly unlimited like folks in the city can get? No! But they don’t get to own 16 acres on a river with deer, turkey and all kinds of peace and quiet that we enjoy daily! So I’m ok with the limit. We have dish network for our tv programming, but could never enjoy some of the benefits that go with it. Even with 150 g, I was terrified what it would do to our data useage. We are Finally connected to our WiFi. I had a tv series that failed to record the very first episode. We ordered it on demand. While we didn’t watch it at that moment, so I guess, technically it didn’t stream, but there was no buffering and the picture on our 70” screen was fine. Yeah! We bought an Xbox one that came with a free game that was over 50 gs. We are able to download that for our grandson without going over our limit. Our speeds are not ever more than 15 mbp, an often around 3 mbps during prime time but how great it is to have our place inte country and plenty of data to do most things without constantly checking data. Yes we have lots of stuff connected, WiFi thermostat, desk top, kindle, two laptops, two tablets and two smart phones. We just don’t run everything at once and I use my router to block devices at certain times. We won’t be binge watching Netflix but we can certainly download movies or tv shows fairly often and never have to worry about running out of data if my Apple products get the latest OS downloaded accidentally!

Exede rocks at our house! Thanks for bringing these country mice into the techno age!.

Awesome! Thanks for that Rose! This is the kind of stuff we like to see because you guys seem to have the spread from gaming to streaming to surfing on multiple devices.

As for the WiFi thermostat just gotta add a voice assistant like Echo or Google home...that gets you into a rabbit hole of wanting to automate everything and turn your lights on by voice!

I am in the same boat. I live about 15 miles from town and there is only one DSL “provider” which “serves” my area. I use “provider”and “serves” loosely because the BEST speed I was able to get was 0.5mbps. I was able to get this lightning speed when it was working. They explained, because I live so far out and I was on a copper line my service would literally only work half the time. So I was paying $50 a month to receive poor service half the time.

After doing a lot of research I made the switch to Exede/ViaSat approximately 6 months ago. So now I pay $125 to have consistent service 99.9% of the time. I couldn’t be happier, well I could but it would be greedy. Most of my data is used surfing with some YouTube. During peek time I usually have speeds of 2-5mbps and after 2am I’ve seen speeds of over 35mbps.

I was on the Liberty 50 boost 25 plan until tonight, I made the switch to the unlimited silver plan for the same price. It’s what suited me best and I don’t have to wait until 3am to do all my updates.

I have attached a screenshot of some of my speeds.

Great job ViaSat.

ViaSat Brad, why do speeds slow after switching to unlimited plans?

They slow you're speeds so it will take 2 months to use 150GB

Folks, my speeds did not slow! We are seeing some faster speeds but nothing over 16mpbs and not 25. We’ve had 3-6 Mbps with congestion BEFORE we switched. The speed has been consistently better since we switched.

So maybe us "old pros" are falling into that old trap where it seems that a few post about switching and having slower speeds on a help/bitch forum make it appear the sky is falling.....

We're all curious... which is why Mark's non-peak experience after just switching last night would be useful - Liberty Boost 25 experience vs. Unlimited Silver 25 (with both under priority data threshold) to determine if plan type results in different results. Hist early AM speeds prior to switching were great - what are they like now almost immediately after switching although he can probably go to bed earlier now. What about this AM?

Outside of a larger priority data threshold and optional vs forced Video Data Saver I would anticipate no real difference between yesterday and today.

I'm not going to compare my speeds from 3 months ago to those of today except as an indicator that the unlimited plans were successful in increasing bandwidth demands.

Wasn't really trying to hijack anything.  I was just making a point that just because you speeds are "up to", it doesn't mean you are always going to get that speed.

Granted, my speeds are up to 12 mbps, and I am getting a few mbps during primetime when I have priority data left.  When I don't have priority data left, I can expect speeds around 256 mbps.  Its perfectly fine for surfing the net, but not so good for video.

During the day of course, my speeds reach and sometimes pass 12 mbps.  I've even seen 12 mbps speeds after using up all of my priority data and being on the Liberty Pass during the day.

Viasat gives us what they can.  If the network is free, you get full speed.  If the network is congested, everyone slows down to different degrees depending on what your service plan is.

I will try to conduct more testing but to be fair we are suppose to have some weather roll in tonight. I just did another test and here are the results.

No problems there Mark.  Excellent speeds. Your speeds slowing during prime time are normal.  Speeds will get better when VS2 goes online soon.

Jim, as long as the speeds stay like this I really can’t complain. Here are a few more test to show consistency. I only hope the congestion at peak time gets better.

I have Unlimited Silver as well, and yes, if video resolution for streaming isn't a big deal to you and, you don't mind downloading videos you want in HD, it's great to just cut things loose and quit worrying about usage.

My family that doesn't live with me used to know I was an internet Nazi - no internet at Grandma B's house unless you had to have it for five minutes to print a page or two for school. Now, it's "Oh, we can go to Grama B's, she'll let us get those new apps."

I used to block my hubby's computer when I went to bed and, he was home so he couldn't binge YouTube all night, not any more, he can have his weekend YouTube fixes. :)

And hey, I don't hate my iPhone updates anymore either. I can even download on demand DTV and let the DVR record it to watch later (it buffers too much to stream HD, but, I can still get it recorded, then get a smooth playback in HD 2-3 hours later. :)

What I love is the occasional "glitch" that lets me stream in HD, it happens now and then, I sort of test for it and, when it happens, FULL SCREEN YT for the half an hour or so it lasts. LOL.

The reason I posted the speeds during off-peak hours was to see if they really do throttle speeds after switching to the unlimited plans. From the tests I’ve done clearly show (in my opinion) that my speeds are very similar before and after changing plans. @Bradley, you have requested to see a sample of my peek hour speeds....ask and you shall receive!

Thanks. My silver runs faster during off peak, but it runs slower than Liberty 10 did peak times. Looks like you are similar.
