Unhappy with data usage

I have had excede for slightly over 24 hours and have used 36% of my data allowance. Internet usage was strictly limited to webpages -- no you-tube, muisic, or live-streaming of any sort. I did not upload or send photos or use social media. I had hughesnet for several years and am familiar with metered internet. I would have used only one days allowance doing exactly the same things I've been doing on excede. I called customer service and was told that some websites are more content heavy etc and that on my plan when I ran out of data I would still have access only at a slower speed. I asked to be released from the contract since it had been less than 24 hours. No deal. I dearly wish I had simply upgraded my hughesnet and supposedly they are one of the most hated companies ever. Is there some reason that several hours of web-surfing has taken over a third of my monthly allowance? I am thinking small claims court. Linda Thomas

Please email us at exedelistens@viasat.com. As for pages, A LOT does use autoplay videos and ads and those can slowly build up. Another thing that is really catching a lot of folks off-guard is the new Windows and IOS updates. Those have been hogging a lot of data and could be a culprit but if you email us we can look into it for you.

Linda, as Exede Brad says, you should email them and talk to them so that they can contact you to discuss this problem in detail.  While data can be used up very fast by stuff going on the background, there are ways you can "set" your devices so that this doesn't happen to the point where you are using up your allowance in just a few days.  I have a plan where my total allowance for a month is 10gb, but I have set things up so that despite daily use (loads of surfing and emailing), I use very little data.  For example, I am now halfway through my billing cycle, and have used only 20% of my 10 Gb allowance.  When I first signed up for satellite internet some years ago, like you, I suddenly found I was using a huge amount of data without understanding why.  In my case, it had to do with certain programs automatically updating themselves without my even being aware of it.  After learning how to change my settings in certain ways, this is just no longer a problem.  
Am hoping that you also may find ways to extend your allowance while still being able to do a lot of what you want to do online.

I also use a flash blocker and ad blocker.
