Network will only work if....

For the past 2 weeks my internet has started randomly going down and is at the point now to where I can only use it for about 5 minutes out of every hour roughly unless I disconnect my router from the box connected to the satellite and plug my computer directly in it with no router to use my internet. This seemed to work perfectly to solve it but I discovered I am unable to install Microsoft updates today. So I have no idea really what to do besides call customer support which I loath doing for anything.

I have Exede internet and my internet would work then stop or be slow: tech help me out on resetting their internet modem to solve the issue by sending a tech out and if that did not work I would have to get a new WiFi modem which I have netgear... However, the price of the internet is high, but works really great for satellite internet in the country. I have streamed four device at once when the internet was free after midnight with no problems!!!! I have used Hughs Net and it suck compared to Exede and have not use Wild Blue which is maybe a merger between two company do not know? If, I was in the City, I would be using ATT u-verse which was at a great price with high speed internet. Now, paying $60 dollars for 10GB of data with 10 dollars off with Direct TV from Exede.

Hi David,
Well, the first red flag is your router. Is is perhaps a Belkin? There are issues with these routers, do a search here on the forum and you will find some fixes.

I know it sounds crazy, but switch your nic cable end for end. Modem end into the router/ or your computer. Router/ computer end into your modem. I know, Nut's, but it has worked before? ☺

The windows update deal. What version of windows are you using? You might try flushing your DNS catch: Go the the start tab, write cmd. when the window opens in the command prompt. Type this at the flashing cursor: ipconfig /flushdns

Let it run, then exit. Reboot the computer. Unplug the modem for 10 seconds, plug back in, let it cycle back to life.

What do you have now?

I find talking to a rep here is far better than on the phone. And you can come back and talk to the same person again, someone will contact you in this forum it might be tomorrow but they will answer and help you. Keep faith all is not lost. :)

It seems that if taking the router out of the loop causes things to work properly then perhaps the problem is the router. Whose router is it?

I had similar problems about a year and a half ago. I was using a Linksys router, and it would disconnect from the internet randomly several times a day. I got tired of running upstairs to reset my router, so I had a remote power switch made to control Christmas lights, and with that I could power cycle my router from my comfy living room recliner. My son, who is a computer wizard, suggested that I buy a new router, and not a Linksys, so I did so, and have had no more disconnects since then. So many people are blaming these disconnects on Exede and the Exede modem, but in reality the wireless router is usually the cause. There are many wireless routers without this disconnect problem, but if you have one that plays this game, it is time to replace it.
