My older wireless printer HP Pro 8600, cannot find the network on the Viasat modem. Do I need a router to connect the printer?

Just set up the Viasat. I cannot connect my HP Pro 8600 wirelessly or by using the USB port on the modem. Do I need a router to connect a printer? Have connected phones and laptop with no problem.

The USB port on the modems isn't used to connect printers or anything else. It's "reserved for future use".

Which Viasat modem?

Surfbeam 2 would require a router since it's only a modem and assume that's not what you have based on your description

The HP Pro 8600 appears to only support 2.4 Ghz wireless band.

WiFi modem supports either 2.4 GHz or 5 Ghz wireless (only on or the other can be enabled). If you have a mix of devices that require you to have both bands, you'd need to add a wireless router.

The WiFi Gateway supports both bands simultaneously (at least according to the documentation I've seen).
