My download speeds tonight are horrible.

I live in Estill Springs, Tennessee. My Viasat connection got disconnected this afternoon and when it reconnected the download speeds got worse. Now, it is 7:46 pm here and I'm trying to download a file from Firefox using Internet Download Manager and it keeps showing that the download speed is averaging around under 100 k/s. Why is it so low in my location tonight after the connection went off this afternoon. I have attached a screen capture from speedtest.net showing my download speeds and uploads speed.

In situations like this, the first thing you want to try us unplug your modem for 5 to 10 minutes, then restart it and see of that resolves the problem. If not, wait a few hours and see if the problem goes away. Might be an issue at the gateway, which is typically just a temporary problem.

Thanks for that comment. I just think it was a pretty active night. A lot of activity that slowed the connection. I had thought of unplugging my modem, but then I had thought that it just might be a busy time for some reason. I just done another speed test this morning and everything is doing okay. I don't know why it was busy last night. I'm actually getting 27 mb/s which is just a tiny little bit higher than my plan of 25 mb/s on the download speeds. Thank you for the suggestion.

Also, here lately I'm just playing online chess and spotify and facebook a lot which doesn't use much. I gotta have my music. I have hulu, but don't use it much. I'm on the unlimited 150 GB and have only used 20 GB for this month. The usage is about to roll over on the 12th. I also use twitch, but here lately with the holidays it doesn't stream to well, especially at night. I also have school starting Jan 14th. I also watch Youtube videos. Other than that, that is what I do online which isn't much compared to most people. I don't really want to change my plan because I'll be using it more now that the holidays are over. Also, I am a flight simmer some of the add-ons are pretty huge files, like over a gig and the stuff I download for chess like databases or chess emagazines or software for like training can be over a gig. So, I don't need to change my plan. I was trying to download a chess emagazine last night and got frustrated because it was going to take an hour to download. Fortunately I just canceled the download. I use Firefox mainly. Now that everything seems okay, I'll try downloading this morning.

DON'T give up your Feeedom plan. That would be a bad, bad mistake, especially since you don't use that much data.

Again, when you see speeds that slow, the first thing you want to try is to u plug the modem for a few minutes, and then try again.

I won't. Like I said, I suspect now that the holidays are over and it's not as busy now that people are returning to work and school that I'll be using more and I'll be back to my usual routine.

I'm missing your reference to Freedom but do see Unlimited.

So is it a grandfathered Freedom Plan or is it one of the grandfathered Unlimited plans on Viasat-1 that started at 150GB before being cutback on Viasat-2?

Not that it should make a difference either way until you actually exceed 150 GB usage except for video stream detection on unlimited plans.

Neither, I was a new customer. I've only exceeded the 150GB usage twice since I've became a customer and only because I had to reinstall Windows 10 and reinstall all my programs which caused me to exceed the 150 GB usage.

I'm also taking online classes. I'm currently a student at a local community college, but now that the holidays are over it shouldn't be as busy during the day. When it's after 3:00 pm I noticed download speeds start to drop. It started this week. It hadn't been doing that during the holidays.

So it's an Unlimited Plan on Viasat-2 at 150GB? That would be an Unlimited Platinum Plan but then a 25 Mbps plan wouldn't make any sense - what does your account page identify the plan as?

What does your modem look like? triangular prism or rectangular upright?

I'm just trying to resolve the Freedom (or Feeedom as VeteranSatUser said - maybe he really did mean Feeedom!) vs Unlimited - they are distinctly different plans and I am confused and curious that's all. Viasat's got so many 0plans active now you need a scorecard to keep track of the differences and why folks get different results. At least you didn't fall for the epson printer scammer above ;) 

Regardless, sounds like your suffering from over-utilization (congestion) on your beam during peak usage periods.

Specifically trying to resolve the discrepancy when compare to the current customer agreement (a picture is worth a thousand words click to enlarge):

 

and that's only a fraction of the fine print in Exhibit A of the customer agreement! No wonder everybody's confused (or at least I am). Just wait until they introduce the new Infinity and Beyond Plan with Viasat-3 ;)

Okay 

FREEDOM - Use all of your priority data, get slowed until your billing date PERIOD, no matter what, you will ONLY get slow speeds.

UNLIMITED - Use all of your priority data you MAY (might, maybe, possibly) be slowed during times of congestion on your beam but, you MAY also see top speeds of 12 or 25 Mbps, depending on your plan, even after using all of your priority data, if your beam is not congested at the time.

How congested a beam is varies depending on how many customers on that beam are using the internet at any given moment. So, On a Freedom plan, you'd see slow speeds once you ran out of Priority data no matter what time it was. On an Unlimited plan, you'd see slow speeds on weekends and, afternoons to around midnight or a bit later, depending on your area but, fast speeds from sat 2 AM until three or four in the afternoon even if you had used all of your priority data.

Freedom, Liberty, Classic plans = HARD throttled.

Unlimited SOFT throttled.

Whatever plan he's on, he hasn't exceeded his 150 GB so he should be throttled either hard or soft - leaving congestion as the likely culprit ;)

My question was what plan he was on - Freedom or Unlimited? The answer provided was neither -  Feeedom is still a possibility I guess and as VeteranSatUser once said:
