Primarily because it makes little economic sense or practical sense to combine satellite modem functionality with router functionality even in 2015. Buy a router for as little as $50 or less and attach it to your modem.

No you misunderstood, from a global economic perspective it makes little sense - it would be limited solely to a ViaSat satellite market (barring standardization by all satellite internet providers)  which is limited by its very nature.

From a practical perspective you can get more for your dollar buying a separate router as suggested by others below, but that depends on features you desire as a consumer.

The real question is whether the planned combination mentioned below will result in a higher lease fee or remain $10 per month as to which makes more sense for the consumer.

But as mentioned below from a pure ViaSat perspective it makes sense since it's a captive market.

You can get a perfectly good wireless router from Amazon for < $20 that works great with Exede, the TP-Link TL-WR841N. I used one for several months and had no problems and would still be using it except I wanted a better router to run DD-WRT on. The TL-WR841N will run DD-WRT but add blocking wouldn't work for some reason, but that may have just been the version of DD_WRT I used on it.

How much does that save to not rent their router

Currently Exede does not provide a wireless router. Although they have announced that one is coming it remains to be seen what if anything it may add to your costs.

Hello Ann, as of now there's no 3rd party device that will work with Exede as far as a modem is concerned. Routers on the other hand are all currently 3rd party as we do not provide those and require customers to purchase their own.

Hello Guillermo. As of now we don't have a surfboard modem option available. Our current modems work with several varieties of wireless routers.

I would not want the  modem to have wireless capability since, like many others, the modem is located in the far end of the house. At that location, wireless signals would not be usable, so I prefer to have a separate wireless router located in a location closer to the users.

My last satellite modem functioned well for 9 years before I upgraded to Exede.  I went through three generations of wireless routers during that time span.  I'm just as glad I wasn't tied to an early generation router.  (Yeah, I know...the cable companies and DSL folks combine their modem and router.)

I too am glad they don't! We have a cable line at work to have wireless that is in no way tied to our network and that modem has wireless built in and I sit closer to that modem then our wireless router on the other side the building and my phone connects to the router over the modem.

Well, guess what?  Exede will have a Wireless Modem in the near future.  Might be available in 2015 after all!

In retrospect, it does kind of make economic sense from a ViaSat perspective - especially when subscribers must use ViaSat supplied equipment and are charged a monthly lease fee - kind of takes away the risk of bringing a new product to market.
