Low DL Speeds

I have been a long-term VS1 customer. It worked OK. Switched to VS2 and now I'm under 2 MB at all times except if I get up at 4 AM to 6 AM  then I can get (hold on!) 3.5 MB down.  WTF?  Why are they signing up MORE people when they can't handle the people they have?  I asked NRTC tech (will follow up with their legal dept this week) and he said another month - or longer of this because of "congestion."
If your rural electric coop says to move over to ViaSat2 and you can get the unlimited plan and 12 MB download speeds...tell 'em to get lost.  Ain't happening here and it's been two weeks of lousy crap so far.  Saw 8 MB for a few moments 2 weeks back then gone!  Poof!

Just so we're clear, I buy the VS2 service from an electric coop which resells thought NRTC (national rural telecommunications corp) which (I presume) is a ViaSat2 reseller.
I used to be a serious IT/VP level guy in a Gold Partner - and this is laughable.  Don't these people have any idea what an SLA (service level agreement) is?   Have never seen 12 MB d/l speed here.

Please:  Google "Speed Test" and post your results. 4:17 PM Central on a Saturday and you know what I'm getting?  (I mean after six hours of tech on second call out, replaced dish, new transmitter unit, ran new cable, second modem, all other devices off, tried two different PC 's and a phone...oh,  and $75 bucks I kicked in out of my own pocket for the poor service rep?"

0.88  Mbps download  0.53 UP on a clear day, perfectly pointed dish beam 512.

This is back to dial-up speeds.  Thank God we have two HDSL's we can bridge for backup.  Just sayin...

Please take a minute and post your speeds.

Finally (because I don't take "No" very well) the NRTC got the straight dope. We had gotten the "low signal" story all day and even after all the gear changes...until the VS NOC finally admitted  "VS2 has load balancing issues..."  WTF?

If they get it fixed - great, I will have hope and remain patient.  If your speeds suck, maybe the NRTC can have a come to Jesus with folks about where the line is in law between where new tech stretching the truth and consumer fraud is these days..

Thanks for you time - now what is your speed?

Oh and now I'm getting?

1.45 Mbps download

So help me with the math:  If $100/month gets 1.45. how much for the REAL LIFE 12 once in a while stuff?

Come on ViaSat trolls, block  me.... But how about just delivering what I pay for?

@George Ure ummm... OR turn 21 yrs old IF they dropped outta school :3 OR if they get there GED soon before 21 yrs old... then they can get that money :3 BUT!!! i gots mine when i turned 21 yrs old... but i gots about $10,000 the rest of it went for taxes :3 BUT!!! all of that $10,000 went bai bai... cause i spent about... close to $3,000 at gamestop XD i mean... GAMESTOP WAS PROBABLY HAPPY AND SURPRISED THAT THEY HAD THAT MUCH MONEY FROM ONE PERSON!!! :D so yeah :3

Breath-taking performance on our beam in E Texas, huh?

If you don't know what an SLA is and don't really know IT, just watch the troll chatter to sell even more people into these kinds of speeds.
Honest to God if I could see 8 MB even half the time, I would not waste my time here.  But after 2 installer trips, lies from the VS NOC about signal (not too many of you own Rhode and Schwarz test equipment, I'm just guessing, much less how to use it)..but this is absurd.
Let's all use the same metric base not that Netflix deal...

Very happy customer for 10 years, over 6 with Viasat. 12 Mbps Freedom plan, speeds vary from 8 Mbps to 17 Mbps.

Definitely not joining in on your frivolous lawsuit game.

BTW, the contract you agreed to already states that you agree to go through arbitration, not to sue Viasat.

Not to sure what rights you have with NRTC, since they are a wholesale entity of Viasat and not a legal part of Viasat.

George, tell us what plan you are on, what speeds you are getting, morning, afternoon and night. VS2 should not be oversold. Did you use all of your priority data? Give us something besides rants.

While VS2 may not be oversold, it was implied that they were taking some additional steps in beefing up the ground infrastructure for some beams during the last conference call -  that was anticipated to be completed in the July/August time frame. That may explain George's stating that:

I asked NRTC tech (will follow up with their legal dept this week) and he said another month - or longer of this because of "congestion."
I really don't know but can state with some certainty that when it comes to speed, my Jugs radar gun is clocking all of the bits at around 186,000 mph both up and down - now if I could get them to all arrive at the same time... but that's a capacity issue not speed.

IF it was 21 ms... THEN!!! ID BE HAPPY GAMING ALL THE TIME!!! :D BUT!!! try speedtest.net and see how your MS is :3

You need to know that many here are going to question the reliability of that speed test with a 21 ms latency on a satellite internet connection.

Other than that the Google speed test from M-Lab is pretty consistent with results I get from testmy.net and others except for the questionable latency - it should be on the order of 500+ ms - personally I think M-Lab truncates it under the assumption that it can't possibly be that high can it????.

That being said, you're an NRTC customer just like me - it's a wholesale relationship they have with Viasat - the employees here cannot even look at your account to see what, if anything, is wrong. Similarly emails to Viasatlistens (often mentioned here) wont' get an answer other than to contact NRTC - been there done that.

You need to go through NRTC's support - your contract is with NRTC and in our case at least that's who would be the target of any class action.

"Remember, I'm one of the guys that invented wireless"

"Guglielmo Marconi
Italian inventor and engineer Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937) developed, demonstrated and marketed the first successful long-distance wireless telegraph and in 1901 broadcast the first transatlantic radio signal.

Well.... here is my speed now.  I was specifically told speed would be "Up To 12Mbps" and dag-nabitt, they better get their speed under control or I'm going to have to get serious with them.  This going way too fast is going to use up all my priority data real quick-like.  What if there is a data leak?  I could lose everything in hours!  I only get 150GB of priority data a month so this has to be fixed quick!  You guys with the slow speeds are on easy street... your priority data should last the month with no problem.

Your DNS is handled by ViaSat no matter what you may think or try.  The only way to use a different DNS is to use a true VPN.  ViaSat intercepts DNS request and subs in their own on the fly.  It has to do with their "Optimizers" and compression.

Don't know if it's still true or not on Viasat-2 but Viasat hijacks DNS requests anyway (unless using VPN).

It's part of their acceleration magic as I recall (there hasn't been much recent discussion on it).

But yes on the "Unlimited Data" Plans, detected video streams are throttled to affect the content provider's choice of quality - different rates depending on bronze, silver or gold - that's why Fast.com shows slower than other tests - it's detected as a video stream and throttled based on your plan's specs.

Fast.com does the same thing with HughesNet.  Fast.com does this deliberately, as far as I know, to show what one's streaming speed will be, which makes sense with it belonging to Netflix.  In our cases, this is important.

Maybe George should have contracted directly through Viasat for his internet service. I thank him for this very interesting weekend entertainment.

Time to run to the store and stock up on some more beer and popcorn. This thread might just ruin my budget this  month.

BTW George, I was around this great earth before you were, and my family always enjoy listening to their wireless on Saturday nights, even before I was born.

Have a great weekend.

The problem is:  As the day goes on, the speed goes down.
I posted a thank you this morning (speed was at times a bit over 12 - and I appreciate it.However here's where we are now - dropping again:

For those who were wondering, here's the additional information:
1.  I do not have a written agreement with my local utility for internet service.  In Texas, a person's word is their bond (e.g. we're not lawyer happy).  We like to talk out our differences - as we are here.
2.  My service plan is 12 MB and unlimited.Question to the group:  Should I go to a metered plan that doesn't throttle streaming?  Or, is there such a thing.3.  Since NRTC customers may (as a class) have speed issues, should I seek a special dispensation so I can get ViaSat direct instead of being told it's "its a congestion issue" because I have an account via an NRTC retailer (the local electric company?
Hey, I'm open to ideas here (money is not the issue), but so far, other than a bunch of happy customers chiming in, no one is offering solutions should the problem return to levels seen Saturday:
  • We have changed out the physical dish (metalwork/reflector)
  • We swapped out radio modems.,
  • We swapped out cables
  • We put in a new modem
  • I've bought several MU-MIMO wifi adapters and will fire them up Monday or Tuesday (Prime makes rural living work, lol)
The key point is that the same system that was generating sub 2MB speeds is now slowing again (and clear weather on site).
Got my fingers crossed the improvement holds through the day...The stock market opens in 23-hours 30-minutes and I'd like high confidence that when I am looking live market data it will be dependable.  Especially since the market should drop 220 tomorrow, lol...
Thanks for your help...all the other stuff...not so much.  I do appreciate VS letting us share views - that's a solid. I just want dependable blazing fast speed and no data limits when I have money on the table.

Note to Steve - yeah, wireless is totally cool - back to the bench this morning to restore more classic ham equipment.  Google AC7X...

George, your speeds will continue to drop as the day goes on. People are starting to get out of bed after a long nights rest, and will be on their internet, the adults streaming, since many of them have dropped their satellite TV service, and the kids will be on their devices doing what kids do these days.

Those things are not something that can be controlled. It is just what goes on these days.

If you rely on your Viasat internet to do your day trading, as your source of income, you will have good days and bad. It is a choice you made when you chose country living. For me, since I do not have a job, those days have been gone for over 15 years, I just use my internet for entertainment, and occasional banking and shopping, along with trying to assist satellite internet customers with solutions to their problems with their equipment.

Good luck, but just remember, satellite internet is what it is.

Sorry saw NRTC. Unfortunately NRTC is going to be your point of contact for the entire life of your account from activation to disconnection. Viasat nor the corporate office will have access to your account
