We know managing a metered data plan can be a challenge, when 'the internet' seems to come up with new ways every day to consume more data with or without our knowledge. To help, we've put together a new page that collects articles and videos to help manage your data more effectively. You can see it here.
BTW: These are pretty short videos that don't use a lot of data!

Very helpful tips! I recommend a video about Windows 10 updates. If its not set up right computers can upload updates to other computers on the internet which will use up a lot of data fast.

Thanks Russty. We do have a Help Center article about that, which I'm adding to that page per your suggestion. We'll also take a look at making a little video showing how to do this.

Hi Alex. That is a good article but what I was trying to say is better explained here. I tried the metered connection setting but I prefer automatic updates than manual. I am on a liberty plan and it does not matter if updates are downloaded at 2pm or 2am. I just don't want Microsoft using my computer as a server to update other peoples computers.

Russytrucker. To prevent Microsoft from using your computer as a server,

Go to:

Settings,
      Windows Updates,
           Advanced Options
                Choose How Updates are Delivered
                    PCs on my local network

Cathy, in that same box, under Update settings, the third line down is Advanced Options. Clicking on that brings up the options available. Choose how updates are delivered will give you updating options.

Very simple answer.  The data meter is not in real time.  It can take many minutes to many hours to update your data usage.  Turning the Modem off for a few minutes or even a few months will show data used before you turned it off.  Simple.
