Well if you had unlimited plan before then you really won't like exede. Because everything you do on it counts against your data allotment. Yes even checking your exede email account and even when you log into the my exede site.

Thank you. Yep I'm really nervous about it all. I know I'll be ok but my 15 yr old son might have some internet withdrawals esp gaming online lol. I let him do what he normally does last night and we've already used 1gb. Backing him down now lol
Thank you. Guess this month is trail and era time for us all. I have Liberty pass so I'm just gonna pray. Thank you

I asked Exede for an unlimited plan.. they said they will never have an unlimited plan....hmmmm... I don't stream videos.. I don't play games.. I can't do anything and have the liberty plan.. 30GB and still run out a week or more before it's due again..

See my post below - pay close attention to the need for an ad blocker, disabling automatic updates and a flash/html5 media control extension. The latter is particularly important since videos embedded in web sites will autoplay, or worse yet preload regardless of your intent to watch them or not.

Again tell us the operating system(s) and version(s), browser(s) and router you use and specific recommendations for each can be made - there are simply too many possible combinations to list and offer suggested solutions without knowing your specific environment.

If you don't watch videos or game, 30 GB should be no problem once you eliminate all the things done on your behalf and without your knowledge to consume data.

Elaine, my computer is on from 6am to 5pm everyday...I constantly visit many web sites, participate in many technical forums, my email client checks email once an hour and I do a lot of program updates, including Windows Updates on patch Tuesday...I don't use my computer for online gaming, cloud services but do stream small video files from Facebook and youtube...I have 3 browser extensions added, FlashBlock, AdBlockPlus and Web-of-Trust (WOT)

I'm on the classic Exede 10GB plan and my highest monthly usage for the past several years has been about 6GB's...

So you, or someone, is using a lot of data or one of your installed programs is doing something you're not aware of...do you use Skype, or any peer-peer file sharing software???

Probably three of the biggest habits you will want to change are video streaming or having an account with Netflix or similar, playing online games or using a cloud type service for data backup.

There are other habits that can use large amounts of data too...just remember, every byte that goes in or out via your modem is counted..

In addition to that already mentioned, you'll want to eliminate any unwanted and unnecessary data usage in general. Specifically, you'll want to ensure that:

  • automatic application updates are disabled (defer them until you have data to spare or when in liberty pass mode);
  • install an ad blocker browser extension for each device you use to access the internet; configure your browser(s) to prevent automatic playing of videos appearing on web pages;
  • better still install a browser add-on extension that prevents both auto playing as well as pre-loading of media in general;
  • don't allow don't allow your DirecTV or Dish receiver (if applicable) to access your internet connection
  • don't utilize cloud backup services
You face a learning curve but it's manageable. Knowing how data is being consumed without your knowledge is the best defense. The best thing you can do in that regard is to install a third-party traffic monitoring application on each device which will tell you which applications and web sites are consuming your data. On the Liberty Plan the strategy is simply to conserve priority data.

Those of us who've been down this road can make some specific recommendations regarding add blocker add-ons, flash and media control extensions, traffic monitoring applications, but would need to know which operating system(s), browser(s), and even which router (brand and model) you use to properly target your environment since each is different.

If you use the Firefox browser, there is an add on called UBlock Origin which lets you choose what size of media elements (photos, videos, music, etc...) that should be blocked from loading. I have it set to 256kb which block everything except most forum avatars. Even on the Business 50 plan, it's worth blocking media you do not need to see or hear and, you can turn off that blocking per site or temporarily until you leave that site, if you need to see or hear the media that it blocks.

And NO VIDEO, not Netflix, YouTbue, Ondemand via the satellite TV NADA, that eats data fast. Limit Social media sites to 10-15 mins TOTAL for the household per day. NO FLASH GAMES, flash should be disabled or ask to activate anyway. NO Game updates until the last day of your billing cycle - yep kills online gaming if the game updates more than once a month. Set all Windows 8/8.1 and 10 computers to METERED connection. That means you will get a notification and have to un-meter the connection to get updates.

Let your antivirus stay up to date, but drivers and anything else, ONLY the last day of your billing cycle.

With the blockers and such already suggested, you shouldn't go over your 30 GB.

I think a lot of the suggestions above can help you adjust from an unlimited plan to our Exede data plans. Largest consumers of data is online gaming and streaming. Those are data hogs. This is our official  "what to expect" summary http://www.exede.com/what-to-expect/

And Marcey, another thing you should be aware of...no matter how often you check your usage on Exede's web site just remember that your usage may be about 4 hours (average) behind real time...so don't expect to do a large download and be able to immediately see what impact it had to your usage report on Exede...always wait about 4 hours after your last big use to get a more accurate usage report.

I stream Netflix all month even after my data is used.
