I just checked our available plans. 50 gold is now showing for new customers with 100 gigs of data. We have 150 on silver, so won't be changing, but it does look to be getting better here.

I can get Gold, but only up to 30GB.

You can get 50 probably for the same price.

Variable pricing and plan options. Heaven forbid everybody could get the same and be charged the same. Lol

Perhaps. But my neighbor pays the same for a car as me. That is not the case with Viasat Internet.

Well at least you perceive car pricing in your area to be fair, so you've got that going for you.

You're really singing a different tune these days than you were just a short 10 months ago VeteranSatUser - what happened to my not having to lower my expectations, turns out I should have lowered them even more - but I never bought into the hype that tripling capacity was somehow going to magically result in plans that were going to be 10 - 15 times better - even without the antenna issues. Oh well... enjoy your Freedom.

Well if they were delivering up to 25Mbps across the entire country (like their Twitter feed says they do), that would be a good start.

I am not a fan of deceptive advertising and marketing. I know Andy didnt expect his business with Viasat to go in the toilet either.

None of you that were privy to information about Viasat-2 expected it. Those were all forward looking statements that you received and you guys were touting Viasat-2 as the revolutionary new bird and greatest thing since sliced bread with some unreasonable expectations.

Did Viasat over-hype? Sure - that's the marketing game. But you and a few others are just as complicit in that over-hyping that started circa September - you unwittingly became cogs in the marketing machine and are now walking it back.

I was among the first iteration to be invited to that CoC, I declined for that very reason which was obvious to me at least. I know of one other that did so also. That's also the same reason I self-demote myself from Champion each and every time it's bestowed - I have no interest in being perceived to be a brand advocate. I'll call 'em like I see 'em, thanks. At the same time the majority of my career was spent working in environments where event the slightest appearance of impropriety was cause for dismissal so it's sort of second nature to me.

Truth be told, the moderators here including Alex were the most truthful of all once all the ballyhoo started - their response was consistently we don't know what plans will be but we anticipate that they will be better. Even that anticipation was too high in some areas of the country. But you and others wound up carrying their water...

The problem with revolutionary new technology is that it sometimes falls short on the first iteration.. spit happens, we're on to Viasat-3.

Nah, Gabe. Nobody paying actually paying attention would accuse you of being a brand advocate or shill in either community. VeteranSatUser and I simply disagree on the variable pricing thing - despite that blue loving cup he's also fair and honest.

The newer Hughesnet community is better structured and organized (now that they've abandoned GetSatisfaction). It has many of the features we've been requesting ad infinitum here. At the same time the moderators over there seem more empowered to directly address problems in public rather than total privacy. That level of transparency actually cuts down on some of the white noise over there.The  lack of structure organization over here is part of the problem contributing towards that white noise level. Something as simple as sticky posts cuts down on the repetitive noise. Your new community is more akin to the older Wildblue/Exede forum with a fresher look ;)   

I'd participate there (as I did in the GetSatisfaction based community) but simply refuse to login with any of the credentials they now require for non-subscribers - now I simply lurk and look for info.

Old Labs, the lack of transparency or communication is not limited to this forum, it is mirrored in their dealer/installer side as well. Friday I spoke to a "higher-up" and he mentioned that they, Viasat, really needed to work on having better communication with their dealers.......I said "Better?.......in order for there to be better, you have to have something existing to improve on.....there currently is NONE. Lack of communication between my Wife and I means that when we go out to eat, she thinks we are going out for Italian and I pull up to a Taco Bell....to mirror the communication we currently have with Viasat (and I remind everyone that I'm one of 7 on the Dealer Advisory Council)....my Wife wouldn't have even known I had left the house to grab a bite to eat."
And that about sums it up.

Yes, I'm aware of that Andy... the latest edition of Viasat Vision makes it pretty clear you are being fed just about the same as the rest of us mushrooms. Through the luck of the draw (or should I say bad luck), it appears you just aren't in the right geographic area.

I'm sure not. I was told that the reason our Large beam area was given such lousy plan offerings was because there simply wasn't the demand. Now I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but I know bull when I hear it. I immediately replied that IF there was so LITTLE demand in our geographic area could someone PLEASE explain to me why our VS1 beam and the one just north of me are SO packed that you can't do a speed test above 500k most nights? To which I was told "I know, I know" KNOW WHAT???....you just told me that there is no demand in our area. 

Ohhhhhhh.....don't get me goin'

Yep. We are paying 150 for silver 25/150. It is 150 for Gold 50/100. With less data, we would just use It twice as fast.

Well I am pulling this on a Sunday morning.  On a 12Mbps plan.

Download :: 17.4 Mbps

So yea.  Tonight I will be 500kbps.

So for those that think there is something wrong with their installation or system, no.  It all comes down to primetime congestion for a majority of people complaining about system performance.

Since there are limited locations that can get a high density beam (and if they can get it even fewer who can afford it), I would expect you to see good speeds for a long, long time.

So what would be your guess as to being soft throttle. It would be a small gamble to take to see if you ever get throttled. Not sure if I want to take the gamble though.

It's not really a soft throttle (although detected video streams are throttled) but rather prioritization and depends on the contention for shared resources (in this case shared bandwidth). I suspect there's also some form of throttle to at most 50 Mbps when needed - for now not likely needed and we're rolling down the highway.

It's not as simple as setting a limit - it's network management and the mathematics of queuing theory at play here - in particular, priority based queuing when you exceed our data usage threshold. You'll see lesser effects when you don't exceed the threshold as suggested by Nathan's second test.

The answer is indeterminate and all depends on how quickly Viasat loads up the bird and oversubscribes it - pricing alone should dissuade that from happening soon but some folks are desperate.

Nathan's next "speed tests" posted should probably be those he's getting after he hits is data usage threshold and is subject to prioritization - any significant, extended drops below 50 Mbps would be and indicator that network congestion is headed to a modem near him. For now he's probably safe, but enjoy it while it lasts.

As noted by VeteranSatUser, even my 12 Mbps plan using the old stand alone modem hits 18 Mbps during the day and that's on what's generally considered an oversubscribed Viasat-1 beam - the capacity is there, it's just tapped out when mostly everyone wants to use it.  It goes in the toilet at around 4-5 PM - for me typically around 256 Kbps (despite not being over my priority data on Liberty).

If I had to make up a story that would explain most of the observable circumstances surrounding the rollout of VS2 by Viasat and what to expect in the near future, it would probably go something like the following.

Big Bird; big capabilities

Big boo boo
BigBird looks a lot like spaghetti

Investigation, testing, and salvage goes into high gear

Get as much out to the priority customers [not us] as possible as quickly as possible
String the residential customer along with a dribble of new service
Get it all sorted out and all capabilities identified and tested
Hopefully release some additional decent affordable bandwidth to residential customers when done

I expect that Viasat offerings will eventually improve somewhat sometime in 2018.

That's one of my stories that I just made up.  I hope that you have been entertained.

The way I explain depritortized is this.

Say your grocery store only allows people wearing green (having Priority data remaining) and red (out of Priority data) shirts to shop there. People wearing green shirts get checked out before people wearing red shirts ALWAYS.

You have to wear a red shirt and, you need milk. It's 10 AM so, no one with a green shirt is there, you get right out. Now come 6 PM, you need bread so, you go back to the store but now, there are 100 people wearing green shirts there and, you have to wear a red shirt. You have to wait for all of those people in green to get out before the cashier (satellite) will pay attention to you.

But remember if you're on a non-unlimited plan, you can always buy a green shirt online for pickup at the service desk and cut in line before the guys wearing red shirts in front of you - grocery pickup service isn't available online - one-time use green shirts are available online for $9.99 ;)

Good point, as is th e LNFZ on Liberty plans for those that don't use a lot during the day and, don't mind either being night owls or, using download schedulers.

For someone that wants to use a lot during the day and, not mess with schedulers and, can't get a freedom plan, Unlimited is a good choice.

From my tiny viewpoint of the world it appears to me that Unlimited is not so much a "good choice" but in fact is the ONLY CHOICE.

Am I missing something?  Where or what do the plan offerings look like that offer a "choice" of either unlimited or not unlimited?

There are some areas that are still being covered by Viasat-1 and only offer Liberty Plans. For example, try Zip Code 08540 - Princeton NJ.

I'm seeing Liberty plans [which are not unlimited, correct?] but I'm not seeing any unlimited options/"choice".   My point [very poorly expressed] was that unless there is an option for either unlimited or not unlimited then there is no "choice".  The only choice is to either take what is offered whether it be among limited plans or among unlimited plans or to take nothing.  ~ just nit-picking a word because the original statement struck me like folks everywhere and anywhere supposedly could select from unlimited plans or non-unlimited [limited?] plans which I have not noticed to be the case anywhere.

Yes, that's true - the only choice in that sense for those like myself is to keep my Liberty plan or abandon it by moving to an unlimited plan.

Both plans are technically "unlimited". The differences are how speed restrictions are imposed, video resolution, and a free zone.

If I had to choose between Liberty and an "unlimited" plan, I would take Liberty. It provides more flexibility to the end user (provided you stay under the priority data cap of course). That is what the free zone is for.
