My speeds are fine and always have been. Matter of fact for most people they don't have a problem or Viasat residential and commercial satellite Internet wouldn't stay in business very long. It's just that forums like this one attract people that have a problem or are just looking to complain. Not too many people stop by to say how well it works. Just like most any other business few customers stop by to say how well it's going....you just hear from them when they have something to bitch about.
Satellite Internet probably never will come close to speed, bandwidth and reliability of a terrestrial option, it's simply the nature of the beast. Back in the day all of us in the boonies only had dial up Internet so even the first generation slow systems like Hughesnet were seen as a godsend. I've been on that end and every new satellite that is put up features more bandwidth and quicker speeds but it will probably never come close to a cable or fiber Internet experience. If you want, need and expect that then you'll have to move back to town.
And to dovetail on what Bev said some gateways are more full than others so a lot depends on where you live and what the contention ratios look like.
