In regards to data usage - found my missing bandwidth!

Mercy, I just checked data usage and noticed we had used 20% by the second day. We've never had a problem with data before. I checked my data meter on the laptop and it was only 1%. I checked the data usage on my Nexus 7 and it showed 1.3 GB that was used after midnight.

So where did the data go???... Found it, we have Directv. After a few questions and answers my wife told me that a movie she selected that was about 1/2-over said at the bottom of the screen to press the back arrow to watch from the beginning. She did not know that used data. (she does now Ha Ha)

I just wanted to pass this on. I figure I'm not the only one this has happened to.

We've had Exede for 10-months without any problems what so ever.

Thanks for sharing, I'm sure it helps make us all a little smarter as to how we use data.  I was aware of Directv problems with internet use, so I disconnected my internet in settings for directv.  It keeps reminding me that I'm not connected to the internet, and it always puts a smile on my face.  I don't think there is a choice of resolution with directv downloads, and if in HD, the file would be huge for just one movie.  I am doing much better with netflix and amazon prime, I get a lot of viewing time with much lower data use.

The sad thing is directv says exede does not count their data against directv on demand usage. I learned in one day that it was a lie. It sucks the life out of your data.

If anyone with DirecTv wants to do VOD but doesn't want to stay up for LNFZ I have an elegant, inexpensive and cheap solution.

It's easy. It's cheap. Give or take about $12 tax included.

You probably have some wireless device that connects your DVR to your router similar to:

Now you need a wall timer. I use: http://www.lowes.com/pd_144506-89916-TM-064_0__?productId=50063927&Ntt=timer&pl=1&currentURL=%3FNtt%3Dtimer&facetInfo=  from Lowe's but you can use any of the thousands of similar devices on the market.

Plug the wireless device into the timer, set the timer to come on at midnight and off at 5AM.

Select your VOD items as you normally do. They'll queue until the device connects and then download the items. If it's in the middle of a download and the timer turns it off then at the following midnight the download starts again.

I've been using this for the past 12 months since I started DirecTV and Exede and never had a problem. Occasionally you'll see a message telling you it can't connect but that's been very rare for us.

That's it. Elegant, effective, easy and all for under $12.

Hi Bsweep, Thank you for sharing this information! I know a lot of customers have issues with using DirecTv and not realizing it uses up a lot of data. Again, thank you for sharing I know this will be helpful for everyone. =)

I didn't know that DirectV used your Exede. I don't order movies from DirectV but how do they get your internet signal? I have my Exded dish and the seperate dish for DirectV. I'm confused. Happens as you age you get confused easier.

Hi Susan,
Here is one that looks petty good, ProteMac Meter 3.4.56:
http://www.directoryofshareware.com/preview/protemac_meter/

They are asking $30 for it though and it does say it works with Mac 10.1. It does seem to offer a lot of details and tracking info.

Hope it helps, I'm a Windows man so I can not test it.

Thank you Everett,  I'll give it a spin.  Looks much better than my previous app.  Of course, that one was free.  Sometimes we get what we pay for!
