Buy a good quality Netgear router and be done with it Barry. You'll have much better range and more constant speeds.

Your missing the point, I did not want nor do I pay for the extra speed. As it seem questionable whether those speeds are  attainable on a regular basis. I would be happy with the regular modem, why will Exede not give me one?

And yes I have a high end router and a wifi extender and yes I can make it all work even with their combo wifi/router/voip/modem with all those features I do not want and do not use, that a just a hindrance to overcome.

I take it that when you ordered Exede you were not made aware of any other configuration than the Wifi/Boost modem.
Did you place your order online, with a sales agent at Exede, or a sales partner?

The order was placed online, about 7 months ago. Counting down to ex customer status, can't come soon enough!

When you placed your order, did you have a choice of modems or was the wifi one the only one you could choose?
I'm not trying to corner you or anything, I'm gathering information for my next meeting. The more information I have, the more I can help.

No there was no choice, the 12 Mbps plan came with the wifi router. I am sure their reason for pushing it on people is for the potential up-sell. i.e. Boost 25 and Exede Voice. As you say the extra speed is not really needed or worth the extra money. And having had the experience of satellite VOIP, I would never do that again or recommend it to anyone.

A little honesty instead of excuses and we gotcha's  in the contract might increase the customer base, as opposed to the Phishing scams they use now.

Barry, they are looking at a couple of different issues with the SB2+ (Boost 25 Wifi) modem. I have one and, it works great except it does run hotter than I would expect, but not enough to cause a fault or anything. Some people are seeing very slow wifi speeds, very short range, and other issues that Exede is investigating.

Heat kills electronics. How do you know it is not running too hot to cause damage in the long run.

Lot of problems and issues with these modems it seems. Hopefully they get it right the next time!

I am thinking it is some sort of heat problem because wifi will work good or acceptable for about 2 hours then my speed will drop down to 1 or less. requiring a reset

Set up a fan blowing on the modem as a temporary experiment and see if that fixes the issue. Then you will know.

The truth is no canned built-in router is going to have the range or functionality that a high-quality, Netgear or Asus router can provide.  Just because they give it to you doesn't mean you have to or should use it. They provide connection to Exede Voice too.  I am not going to use that service either.

I don't agree with these 'one stop" hardware modem/router/phone connector devices, but it is what it is.  This just isn't Viasat that does it, but many other ISP's.

I ordered online, Freedom 150GB +boost, I was not offered a choice in modem/router, in fact was told I would not get the boost if I used my (expensive) Netgear router. As of today, at day 7 of my Exede experience, I have reached the 150GB using a laptop, VoIP/magicjack and 1 Roku TV during day, and 1 at night. I am not a gamer, don't stream HD movies, haven't used YouTube during the last week... and now cannot send an email.
My download speed this morning is 0.5Mbps, upload is 0.7Mbps. As to TV.... I suppose I'll listen to CD's for the next 3 weeks.

Steve, I set my Roku the 2nd from the bottom. The ratio of data you'll save is about 10:1 I got that figure from my own test at the house.
A good example. My family watched 5 episodes of Person of Interest and used just over one gig...total, for all five shows. At that rate you couldn't use 150 gigs in a month if you tried.

Thanks Andy, I try that, setting all 5 TV's that way. I'll just have to monitor houseguests lol.

One other thing Steve. Be sure whatever streaming service you are using, like Netflix, be sure to log into your account and turn OFF auto play. Otherwise even if you turn your tv off, Netflix will go right on to the next episode. I found that out the hard way with my daughter and Sofia the First.
