Tirzy,

You're getting good speeds because other people's dishes are covered in snow.  So the satellite beam is free for your use (:

Well it finally happened.  It snows in Baton Rouge once every ten years.  Snow on the dish, means no data on the Liberty Pass.

Thankfully I've got a Metro PCS hotspot as a backup and 748 GB of video on my Playon/Plex server.

No worries here.

And just like that, the power went out.

Sucks because I was going to fix a big ol bowl of pasta. Now I've gotta wait for it to quit snowing so I can start up the generator to cook.

It was supposed to stop snowing and start raining this afternoon but from the way things look, the snow just doesnt want to stop coming down.

If I waited for it to stop snowing before I started the generator, I would be froze to death.

Southerners think a skiffle of snow is a show stopper. Can't say I disagree down there. Was in Memphis when they had a little freezing drizzle. You would have thought the world was ending!

So I decided to take a couple of sprite cans and build me a nice little alcohol stove instead of firing up the generator.

Just as my water was starting to boil, the power came on.

It has been a difficult storm but we will rebuild.

Its still below freezing out there, but the dish is working fine.  I'm too lazy to walk outside to see if snow is still on it, but its pulling 5.5 mbps on the speed test.  Good enough for me.

"we got 8 inches of snow here in Washington Parish and was without electricity for 2 days because of the snow."

Had 5 inches down here in Livingston.  People make fun of us for shutting down things for snow, but we are the masters of surviving hurricanes and floods.

We simply don't get enough snow to have the supplies and equipment it takes to keep the roads safe.  Plus the drivers around here are idiots and don't even know how to drive on dry roads.

Some people in the area are still without power.  I only lost power for a couple of hours and my parents were without power for about eight hours.

One of the nice things about satellite is it doesn't depend on local infrastructure to work.  Some of my friends are still without home internet.  For me, Viasat was back online as soon as the snow fell off the dish.  It could have been online much sooner, but I didn't want to go outside to clean the thing.

Glad to hear you have power again.  I would ask how your service is since we are both in Louisiana but it looks like we are on different beams.  I'm on beam 348.

I'm not sure what beam i'm on but my service has been really good. I honestly have no complaints at all. Speeds have been good all through out the day and even when i go over my data cap. Which i only do on purpose when i'm close to the end of the month and close to a reset. Im currently stuck on the bronze unlimited because i dont want to switch to the higher priced ones yet because i got a 3 month deal on the 2 year contract i resigned up for but once i get out of the 3 months if viasat 2 is up imm switch to one of those plans or go to the silver unlimited. Seems to me to have the best price to speed ratio.
