I’m streaming movies!

Earlier this month, I upgraded my plan from Essential 10 to Freedom 150, and it’s working great!  I did the self-install on the new modem, which was very easy, and then I activated it online.  That’s all there was to it.  I signed up for Netflix streaming, and it’s been working beautifully.  So far, I haven’t even made much of a dent in my data allowance either.

Your speeds will be fine DebG.  Have had Exede for 1 year with the same great speeds and stream all the time.

Thanks Jim.  I wasn't worried, but that's nice to hear.  I was very pleased with my old plan, but this one is so much better.

are you getting at least 5 meg download speed all the time after initial plan data usage ? this is the issue many of us are having as for myself often 1/4th of a meg which of course does not allow for much streaming of any kind.

Heck, I don't know; I haven't tested my speed.  I've been streaming movies, and there's been no buffering or slow downs at all.  I don't think there's any "initial plan data usage" on the Freedom 150; it's just 150 GB per month.

Stay within your data allowance DebG and you will be fine.  These other people that are complaining have used all of their data in a few days and expect not to have any consequences.  Exede doesn't offer unlimited internet, no ISP does. Even when you see commercials for unlimited data, the fine print says you will be throttled after using so much data.   Here's an ad for Binge ON data, stream movies free....and the fine print..."Once full-speed data allotment is reached, all usage slowed to up to 2G speeds until end of bill cycle. See streaming services’ terms & conditions."

Thanks Jim.  I'm used to keeping an eagle eye on my data use.  I was previously limited to 10 GB per month, and when I had Verizon, it was 5 GB per month.  I've been using Networx for years; it shows me my daily use when I hover on its icon.

I have had the freedom 150 gb plan for less than 36 hours so no way I have gone over my limit. I'm getting speeds lower than 1 Mbps. It was at .43 a little while ago, now it's at .76. Any suggestions to increase my speed would be greatly appreciated.

Remember to reduce your playback resolution to SD levels or less wherever possible.

Streaming in HD will burn through data at an alarming rate.

You are doing the right things to keep data usage down. I thought I had a reasonable way to monitor my data and all I had to do was look at my LAN Internet light on my router. I set  up the router to keep track of the data and when I get to 145 gig the  router started flashing the color of the internet led. But the directv internet got put on the router closest to the Sb2+ and the stuff I streamed on demand never made it to the LAN Router. So I was notified I was over and They were throttling me down and the router thought everything was cool but the data rate was slow but not annoying. (You can bet I fixed that one quickly) So I checked the rate this morning first day of new billing month and My speed is 50Mbits download and 4.75Mbits upload! And it has been this way from day 1 (2015).

how do you set your resolution in Netflix etc to SD.  What plan do you have for 150g of data?  We have 25 g and it is out within 6 days without any Netflix, one cell phone connected.  We work full time only home 3-4 hours in the evening, one computer only connected when using and we cannot determine how our usage is sooo much.  We are so unsatisfied and when the kids come home from college there is never any internet speed.  HELP!!  The most we have ever used is watching a season of 6 episodes on amazon online and running out of data before the 7th hour...it just seems ridiculous for the expensive service.  thanks for any help

Hi Stacey,

To set your Netflix resolution, go to Your Account, My Profile, Playback Settings.  I currently have mine set to Low; I thought it would be fuzzy, but it's been pretty good. I may end up increasing it to medium, as my data usage has been well under half the daily limit I set for myself (4,950 MB per day).  Netflix "Low" setting uses about 0.3 GB per hour; The "Medium" setting uses about 0.7 GB per hour.

I do use Networx to monitor my data use, and I have it set to monitor the data via the router rather than my computer, so when I watch Netflix on my TV, the data is still monitored by Networx.

My plan is the Freedom 150 with WiFi.  It's been working out well for me, and I recommend it.

YES, great advice Gwalk900..  DebG, if you don't know how to do this, this forum will help you do it.  Let us know.  But, we stream every day at full resolution on Netflix and Acorn and Funimation and YouTube and have never come close to going over our 150g limit.  But we also work full time and stream a couple of hours a day so you can't live on the internet or you will burn thru your data.  But we watch as much as we want to and usually use only half our data.  We are very lucky to have the Freedom plan and expect more plans like this to become available when the new satellite gets on orbit in a few months.

Thanks Jim.  I set my Netflix to a lower resolution to make the most of my data allowance.  It's all working out well so far.
