I know everyone is tired of asking about new vs-2 plans...

Been following a lot of the posts on here about new VS2 plans. Some people wonder what the big deal is since it will free up capacity on VS1 and so VS1 is just as good. Well, I'm a WB user and for the last few months, I've been at pretty much dial-up speeds, even though my usage has been bouncing above and below the 70% speed reset threshold. I have yet to get any response on why this is the case other than my request has been escalated or our system is showing "you should have full speeds". 

So, I've pretty much come to the conclusion no one is going to look at why my WB connection is broke. And really, I'm ok with that at this point. Back when VS1 came out, Exede plans in my area were actually worse (in terms of cap, not in terms of speed, though speed wasn't much better). Now, I see what are I assume are VS-1 plans (unlimited bronze/silver/gold 12Mbit). They are better than what I have. It's so tempting to go ahead and sign up for one of these plans. However...

I keep feeling that it makes better sense to wait until these new VS-2 plans are available. I keep reading that they are still rolling out. I wouldn't be surprised if this area is one of the last to be rolled out. But I'm in a bit of a conundrum...

Do I upgrade to what appear to be VS-1 plans, only to find out I could get something better on VS-2?

Do I wait and suffer though more dialup level speeds on WB?

If I wait, will the current VS-1 plans go away? If I recall, when VS-1 came out, we had Exede plans for awhile and then the website said they were not taking new subscribers. I will admit, I never contacted Viasat to see if an existing subscriber would be able to upgrade. But since the cap was lower, I wasn't really interested in upgrading. From my point of view, the speed wasn't the issue. The cap was.

So I'm kind of worried that if I wait, the unlimited bronze/silver/gold plans I see are going to go away. I mean, if I have to wait a few weeks, I'm ok with that. But it's kind of hard to know what to do.

All ViaSat plans are now offering unlimited data. You choose the video streaming resolution you need. If you upgrade now or tomorrow it makes no difference. The only change will be if you require speeds faster than 25Mbps. If you do, then they’ll put you on VS2, but speed is moot unless you’re using multiple devices in your home. 12Mbps is plenty to stream video so choose the plan that fits your needs and upgrade. Simple

Stephen, that's a great workaround. Download your video during off peak, to take advantage of the free time. Have to do what you  have to do right! Ideally they will just release the better tech to us with unlimited data...but until then...

I'll have to put together an old computer to use as a media server. Thanks for that.

Before I had the Freedom plan, I was doing 40 - 50GB/month during the old 5 hour free zone.

You can really make it work , but it does take some effort and planning.

Honestly I would take a plan with a free zone before I would take a "unlimited" plan because I don't want restricted video resolution on my streaming..

Playon is capable of capturing Netflix video and it is capable of casting the video to your Roku.  It does an excellent job of capturing video,  but the interface for playback on the Roku sucks.  I only use Playon to capture video onto my server.

Plex casts video to Roku as well and has a much better interface.  I simply install Plex on my server and I let it search for whatever videos Playon records.  I then install Plex on my Roku and interfaces with the Plex software installed on the server.  

I hope what I am saying makes sense.  I've got a thread out there with this information as well.

I still use Nightshift and it works well, but that is going to away at some point and have to have a contingency plan.

Why, when I got 150GB/month? Because my internet is so slow during primetime I wouldn't even be able to watch in 240 resolution. Sad but true.

Daniel, if you are still on a WildBlue, augmented beam, I HIGHLY recommend waiting for VS2 plans and, getting on VS2 ASAP. Those augmented beams simply don't have the speed or capacity to cut it for today's internet and, that's going to be more and more noticeable in the next couple of years. Many site now refuse to load at dial up speeds, more will as the internet continues to grow.

Footnote II -  If VS-2 plans are offered, it may be awhile.  As I noted, a number of WB-1 beams were never used in Western states....just Anik-F2's beams.  WB-1  might be retired in 2021 or later.  And they plan to use VS-2 for aircraft.

Any plan above 12 Mbps (25/30/50/100) would be a VS-2 plan.

Ah, yes, I forgot I probably wasn't in a VS-1 area. Though that does kind of make me wonder. When VS-1 was launched, WB pro speeds were doubled (from 1.5MBit to 3MBit). I guess maybe that would be explained by some of the WB users on the same spot beam I was on being within a VS-1 beam (but I wasn't) and they switched, thereby freeing up capacity in order to allow for that 3MBit speed?

The other thing that I find interesting is, as far as I know, the plans I'm seeing now are VS-1 and not VS-2. So that's a bit confusing. Somewhere I read on here that VS-2 plans are 50MBit and higher. And also, the thread here: https://community.viasat.com/viasat/topics/viasats-evolving-network-great-today-even-better-tomorrow... where I asked about plans seems to verify (by a viasat employee) that these are really VS-1 plans. If VS-1 doesn't have beam in my area, why do I have VS-1 plans for my zip code?

Jab is almost correct when he/she wrote “any plan above 25Mbps is VS2. The VS1 satellite capabale of delivering speeds up to 25Mbps with the right modem, but can perform well above that. The VS2 satellite is capable of delivering 12Mbps - 100Mbps. The V1 satellite doesn’t cover all 48 states while VS2 does. As I wrote earlier, the satellite ViaSat puts a customer on is not the issue. The plan you choose, where you live and how full a specific satellite beam is will determine that.

Keypoints:

1.  ViaSat-1 has NO BEAMS in your AREA, which means VS-1 satellite does not offer PLANS in your area.

2. WB-1 beams were never activated in earlier years in your area.  Current status, unknown.

3.  ANIK-F2 users who use SB2 modems receive better speeds than users with Wildblue's modem (aka SB1).

4.  Any plan above 12 Mbps (25/30/50/100) would be a VS-2 plan in Zip Code 83541.

Conversation is about Zip Code 83541; Anik-F2 or WB-1 are both capable of around 20-Mbps speeds when using SB2 modems, and when lightly loaded.

Any plan above 12 Mbps (25/30/50/100) would be a VS-2 plan in Zip Code 83541.

Really, I don't need the speed. I'd be fine with 5 or 6 MBit. I was more interested in the caps. Kind of wondering if the caps are better on VS-2? If it were the case that someone was on VS-1 already and the caps were only slightly better on VS-2, they may as well stay on VS-1 and not pay the hardware upgrade. In my case, I'm definitely going to have to get new hardware, so I may as well choose the best situation if I have a choice.

If you don't care about speed, buy a lower priced Viasat-1 plan offered now. The Viasat-2 plans released so far have been VERY pricey.

Very pricey? Not sure what everyone is looking at. There are no ViaSat 1 or ViaSat 2 plans. Those are satellites. You are a ViaSat subscriber. You choose a plan that fits your needs and that’s it. Some customers are receiving from the ViaSat 1 satellite and some from ViaSat 2. Older customers may still be on the WB satellite and they will eventually all be migrated to the new satellites. I see everyone writing comments on this board and there are a lot of people saying speeds are slow and caps too low. If your cap is too low, call ViaSat and change your plan. If your speed is too slow, call ViaSat and make sure that your system is running at optimal performance. Before anyone says that speeds are too slow or their caps are too low, they all need to first understand why that may be happening and second, understand how to maximize their service.

,There are some plans exclusively on Viasat-2 available in parts of the country right now. Those are the very pricey plans I was referring too.

For a person who isn't fixated on speed, buy a lower priced plan. If you then end up on Viasat-2, all the better.
