You need a driver.... a driver is a middle man fkr the hardware on your conputer....usually this happens after a reinstall of operatijg system.

Google your computers model number and problem......example....... hp laptop ethernet driver for windows 7.

Or windows 8 or what ever os you have

I have not reinstalled anything. Cannot get info by putting "computer model number ethernet windows vista". Planning on getting new computer after windows 10 comes out. Just praying this one will hold out until then.

Kaotic Tech, I am not getting another computer due to this issue. I have other issues that have been going on since Dec. I was told at that time by a number of "tech" people I would be better off getting a new computer before I lost everything. Not sure what you were referring to. Just wanted to add that I got this computer in 2008 and was told it has had a very long life.

Have you changed anything on your computer? Other thing do you have an antivirus? Not saying it is but that all depends on if you have changed anything on your computer like Kaotic said have you reinstalled windows on your computer or anything?

ok then that worries me then...if there is not error in there then you shouldn't be getting that message.  My next suggestion would be go here and download the free edition and run a full scan with it.  You can also sign up here on the other forum and send me a private message if you want and I can try to help you more. To send me a message once signed up and logged in there is a link that says private messages you can go there and send a new one by typing in my name in the "Recipient Users" box.  I have the same name on both forums.  I would run that scan though to double check your computer. If there are no yellow triangles on anything in the device manager then it's possible that the popup is a bug.  Again happy to help how ever I can.

Thanks, I will look at that link this evening after the midnight hour. LOL Right now I am wishing I had just left it go as long as it comes back up after restarting. Thank you so much for all the help you have been and I will get back to you.

I do not think it is anything like that as it might go for a week or more and does not do it.

Is Ethernet the only way you can connect? Is WiFi an option until you buy another computer? Ethernet controllers and wireless adapters are two different things, so if you only use WiFi to connect then you don't need the Ethernet controller.

However, if you need the Ethernet controller (and correct me if I'm wrong) I believe it depends on what brand your Ethernet controller is. If you know what brand it is, search the brand with your OS. For example; "(brand) ethernet controller driver download for windows vista".

Hope this helps

I have always had dial up.
The man from Exede came out and set everything up for me when I changed to satellite. I do have wifi but not sure what is feeding into where. I do not understand anything about the Ethernet controller. Thanks for trying.   :)

USB WiFi "dongles" are very inexpensive.  Staples has them starting at $7.49 and OfficeMax starting at $9.99.  They are supplied with a driver disk and these "cheap" ones work rather well up to about 50 Ft. from a wireless router.

If you buy one, follow install instructions carefully.  Some devices require the device to be Not plugged in until the driver is installed, or until you are told to, others are safe to just plug in and then run the install disk if necessary, (Vista may have built-in drivers for the device).  Again, read and follow installation instructions carefully.  Unplug the Ethernet cable before installing or using the WiFi adapter or it may appear to malfunction until you do unplug the Ethernet cable.

Note:  If you do need to run the supplied install program, Windows "add new hardware wizard" may activate and try to guide you through the setup process.  If this happens, click cancel, but only to the Windows so-called wizard.  Once the device install package completes, Windows will not bother you again as the drivers will have been installed by the setup program that is supplied with the device.

I am not putting anymore money into this computer. If I cannot figure out what I need I will just rely on prayer to keep it going until I get a new computer.
Thank you.

Assuming an HP computer, go to http://www8.hp.com/us/en/drivers.html

You need to know your exact model number (instructions for locating are there) or alternately you can utilize their auto detect utility, then locate, download and install the ethernet driver.

Sounds like driver is corrupt, missing, or possibly even updated with one from Windows Update that's incomaptible (the latter is known to sometimes occur which is why I always rely on the manufacturer site for drivers).

If your ethernet connection isn't working, you'll need to use the manual locate option from another machine, download, copy to target machine and install.

If not HP just search Google/Bing etc. for 'vendor-name support and drivers' - make sure to verify, use and download from the actual vendor's site and not and unreliable or bogus third party site.

It was someone from the HP forum that sent me that link from Realtek.

I did go there  (HP) and they ran my computer to see what I had.

This is what I did see.  Just not sure what I am to do with it.

I do not see any place where they check it or tell you what to do if it is not working. If it is by clicking on the file name? I guess I am just concerned that I may make things worse rather than better.
I know there are no guarantees. Just no one around here that can help me if something goes wrong.
At least at this point I have been able to restart computer and internet is back.
I ran a different check last night in device manager on my realtek and it said everything was working properly. It is until it isn't.
Thanks for being patient with me.

yea that is the link to download the driver.  If that is the correct driver for your computer it wont hurt anything to download it and install it and see if that fixes the issue. If its not the right one it wont hurt anything either it will just fail to finish the install.

Knight Rider, Well, I have downloaded the driver and now we shall see what happens. It had worked for about a week before cutting my internet off so it may be awhile to see if it corrected the problem. Thank you so much for your help and I will get back to you to let you know any updates.
