Need help with data usage

I have had exede for two years. Up until about two months ago everything was fine. Then suddenly I am hitting our limit within less than two weeks. We have changed our habits - no netflix, no nfl streaming (we paid $100 and cannot get a refund), no Roku, no Amazon - nothing -- I even had to stop taking an online course that I paid $1200 for --- anything to reduce data usage and we are still consuming an amazing amount of data usage. I can't understand what is going on and when I call in for help, I get no solution. And we are limited to the 30-gig plan in this area. If I had a better option I would kick exede to the curb in a heartbeat, but you're the only gig in town so I am screwed. Also I cannot seem to change my updates setting in Windows 10 - selecting when I can decide to download is not an option. Seriously frustrated is an understatement! HELP!

maybe if your using via wifi then the devices that are connected to your wifi needs to be turned off. cause if ya dont then... the devices tend to do updates automatically and so on. i have the freedom plan (which is 150gbs a month) and i have my devices not connected to via wifi until imma on them so therefore my devices wont be using my data up.

also if ya put your video streaming to the lowest quality then. youll just be fine. cause ANY HD video will eat up your data pretty quickly. i also watch my anime on online and i put the video quality at about... 480p same thing with videos on youtube 480p. and so on. i also do alotta downloading updates for my xbox one and so on. and i dont use very much data unless its an update onto my computer or my xbox one. it never gives me problems as i tend to let it update itself (even though i have the 150gbs plan)

so it might be your devices that are using the data so fast.

I will echo advice from Tirzy with more specie experiences.
I am on Exede 12-25 which means I get 25 gigs per month and once used up it throttled down, a lot. Between 12am to 5 am data is free. On the Liberty 18 plan it stops after I used 18 gigs. That is why I was lucky to switch to the Exede 12-25 plan. Exede 12-25 is a legacy plan and may not be offered anymore as I understand Exede. If I switch back to Liberty 18 or any of the Liberty plans then I can not go back to Exede 12-25.
I use Windows 7 on my PC and laptops. I have settings to let me decide what updates to download. It uses a lot of data for security updates so I do updates between 12 am and 5 am. I do pay a price for disrupted sleep so my wife tells me. TMI!
Also if you use AOL and let it run the news cycle all those graphics and curiosity clicks consume a lot of data. Facebook is a data hog. To add insult, all those pop up advertisers end up being paid for by your data plan.
I have one PC with Windows 10 but I got technical advice from a support service to help me throttle Windows 10 from updating without my permission and only during the early morning hours when it is "free"
So, when I am not using my PC I disconnec it from the internet and when I go back On allow essential updates

I will second this recommendation.  Try getting rid of windows 10 and replacing it with windows 7, and see if that solves your problem.  Microsoft is rapidly getting to the point where it will eat up all of your resources no matter who your ISP is, even if your ISP is cable or DSL.

Amazing how Windows 10 behaves, yet the updates on my Win 7 machine have pretty much ceased to function anymore.

My Windows 10 actually lets me see the data usage. It says I have used less than 3 GBs in the past month. So it's not this laptop. I have switched my Android phone to use cellular data and have asked my husband to disconnect from the internet when he's not using it.... today I got home after being gone for five hours and discovered that we had used .2GB of data.... wth??

Networks can be strange beasts. Recently a Hughes user was losing data and finally traced it to her husbands laptop that had been denied access during certain hours.

The laptop did an "end-around" connection using her wireless printer as an access point.

I don't have the link to the topic at the moment but I could dig it up if you were interested.

Andrea, while Windows 10 does have an app that lets you see how much data you have used, be cautious about what you see. Microsoft does not consider the data you use as data that should be counted, so it doesn't show that data in their readings. It is still data that goes through your modem, and router. That is why I rely on the data management tool located in my router, which show all data by any devices that goes through it.

Windows 10 updates were killing me because they would fail and then retry, several times. Make sure your live tiles are turned OFF. You can set it to a metered connection but for some reason Microsoft has moved the location for managing this option. My Xbox one is not connected and our kids haven't complained. There maybe some live events happening especially if your using an Xbox gold account. Or an Xbox live account.

My windows 10 computers has an option to set as metered.  I check for and update after midnight.

I just got Excede 9 days ago and i live off-grid so my modem is only plugged in when we have enough power, which has been less than 24hours of user time and we have burned through over half of our data allowance in that short while.  Very frustrating!!!

I spoke to someone at Exede AGAIN - this time I was told that my husbands iPad could be the culprit, using up data in the background when he leaves apps open. I am going to see if that's the problem

Wow that sounds like us! Our internet service reset at the first of the month and and all 15 gigs was gone by the 5th of the month....

We called customer service and they said that there system was down.. We called back and they said that it looks like you used it  during 12am to 5am. I have the free data plan during that time by the way....I tried to explain the CSM  on the phone and he could not answer my questions saying that he was having problem with the system again.

Oh NO!! I check my usage on EXEDE page every morning and write it down on a calendar.  Now  I need to keep a better check on the FREE TIME.  There has been times when I have stayed up and updated our couputers and phones and the next morning my daily use had spiked.  I guess I need to check and record it at midnight before I start the updates.

I am astonished at how many of Exede customers are having this problem. I have Hughes.net, was just now checking out Exede and thinking about changing services but I never have unusual data problems with Hughes but I don't stream movies or that will definitely eat your data. I rarely use more than half of my 50gbs anytime and 50gbs bonus hours. I do use Youtube a lot but for short tutorials. I will wait on changing to Exede. I was hoping for a faster service with Exede but all satellite sucks really.

I have followed directions on several tips that were posted here and it really is helping. I turned off Live Tiles in Windows 10. We disconnect from the internet now when we are not using it, close background applications and disabled some other automatic stuff. I have used less than a GB in 24 hours! First time in two months!! Yes. It may have been the combination of the Windows 10 OS and the iPad -- both of these things were added in November which is when all the trouble started. Thanks everyone. I will keep you updated.

Had same problem. Exede could not help me. Call Direct TV 3 times because it was down loading ON DEMAND programing without me knowing it .  Customer service at direct TV told me that I am the only one that could download any programing. They would not help me. Blamed it on me. I was REAL UPSET with them.  Hung up the phone and did a Goggle search for same problem.  Found out that Direct TV CAN automaticly download programs. I believe they call it recommended programs.  They watch what you watch and suggest simular programs to you and then record it to your DVR and then this uses up all your data. For some reason Direct TV customer service has no idea this is being done.  You can go in and disable it but its hard to find.  I did it but cant remember where to find it.

I just disconnected my Direct TV from the internet.  I get constant pop up messages reminding me to connect, but I just close them out.  It still doesn't help me to blow through 10 GB in 5 or so days with very little usage that I know of.

I have never let my Directv DVR to connect to the internet. Data is too valuable to let Directv take it away from me. I hate those stupid reminders that my Directv would like to access my internet.

And to ADD to Christine's comment - I switched to DISH ayear but both the DIrecTV Whole Home DVR and Dish's Hopper have options on their GUIDE button that say something like "Watch Now" and the user might think they are just setting it up for future record - UGH. As with my previous DireTV Whole Home DVR and my current Dish Hopper they are not connected to my Viasat Internet. Ohe more thing the SLING feature like downloading a recording already on my Hopper took FOREVER to complete which leads me to believe that it TOO uses (was using) the Viasat Internet to accomplish it. Must have to reformat the recording to make it complatible for and IPAD.

I have searched and searched for a cure for Direct TV from using up our DATA with out us knowing it.  I was told it couldn't be done.   WRONG !!   Here is the cure to stop Direct TV from downloading ON DEMAND programs.  And you will sill be hooked to the internet IF you still want to listen to Pandora , ETC.      WRITE THIS DOWN

Go to MENU ,  SEARCH AND BROWSE ,  TV SHOWS ,  GO TO GENIE SETTINGS.

NOW  TURN>    GENIE RECOMMENDS OFF

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK

Hi Gregory, Which of the two services did you like best? Dish Satellite service with Hopper or DirecTV and the whole home genie service? I have the DirecTV service with whole home genie service but was wanting to maybe see if I could get a good deal from Dish because I would be a new customer as that is where you usually get a good much better deal than they will offer existing customers! CNET gave Dish's Hopper a better rating than DirecTV's genie because of much better features. But I am wondering about progaming, etc..
