Data issues on Liberty plan

I am on the Liberty 10 plan and according to my account, I've already used 10.4 GB in less than 2 days.  I called at 9 am on the 20th, the first day of my new month, and I already had used over 1 GB and had NOTHING connected yet!!  I  am still using comcast because I wanted to be sure.  I was suspicious last month, my first month,, how quickly I  went through it.  I only had my phone connected the last 2 days.  When I called they had no answer but gave me an additional 2 GB, good thing, because using all 10 within 2 days....is that even possible?  No answers, no help.  This is crazy.  I'm ready to cancel and pay the early fee, which is crazy because I've used them 1 month and they made me sign a 2 year contract, stating they wouldn't make me abide by that if I had any problems within the first 30 days.  No no one is acknowledging that conversation.  I  don't even see where  you can cancel online.  I  probably just used another GB writing this...

10 GB in ONE day is possible, phones update via WiFi and, those can be multiple GB, Windows updates and, if you watch videos, stream music, download apps, etc.. on any connected device, that all uses a lot of data. Even if all you had connected was your phone, you could have used a lot of data depending on what you did on your phone.

I can do you one better.  This month, when my renewall date came, 8 hours in I had gone over.  I suspect a couple of systems updated, but thanks to Liberty under normal circumstances all continues to work properly - except for the last 2 days although so far this evening things seem OK.

Yes Brian, that can happen. The day I allowed the three computers in my home to upgrade to Windows 10, I used up 10 GB in under 3 hours. Let my step son log on to my router, unfortunately he didn't know to disconnect when he was done with his email and FB, his computer which is normally not online updated and ate 7 GB in a matter of a few hours.

Wasn't long ago that my partner and I both got new iPhones, goodbye 24 GB in less than 10 hours getting those two updated and synced up like we wanted them.

Do a game update, there is a gig or two right there, get even one new game, that might be 10 GB or more. Not hard to use 10 GB in just a few hours.

Now behaving and watching what we do, we average 1GB per day and, that is nothing extraordinary, just normal stuff, no big downloads and no streaming. (a couple of 100MB or less downloads some days.)

My record was 12GB in 45 mins. Got a new computer, downloaded one of my favorite games, Exede and the game server were both flying that afternoon and, it took 45 mins to get all 12 GB. I was impressed with the speed, even knowing that was a rare fluke but, yeah, you can burn data fast with little effort.

Hi Pat,  Please send your account and contact information and we will review your data usage.  Based on many factors, data can be consumed very quickly.  Here are some tips; http://help.exede.net/articles/General/Maximize-Your-Data

Note: if you don't have your computer set to a metered connection it can use up a LOT of data updating.  Also, if you use the iCloud on your computer and have it set to back up your Internet Explorer Bookmarks there is a glitch that can cause it to gobble up as much as 1-2 Gigs/hour. Go in your iCloud Settings and uncheck IE Bookmarks (Mozilla doesn't have this glitch so leaving Mozilla checked is ok-as of this post).

This speaks to the need for exede to have more realistic plans. In my opinion Exede is not set up for today's user because of all the data the average user needs...streaming music, movies, kids using youtube and their favorite social media sites. I am grateful for the liberty plan but many times even that is not fast because of the traffic I suppose. I am excited about this new satellite launch whenever it happens and hopefully satellite internet will someday be able to compete with ground services which at this point is unmatched. Until then we country folks don't have much of choice.

Hi Ty, This is certainly something Exede FULLY understands. While our Liberty plans (if available) adds more flexibility compared to our classic plans, it's definitely a ramp up to what we are anticipating once ViaSat 2 launches at the end of the year. The internet has a everchanging landscape and just in recent years streaming has exploded in popularity. We definitely have this in mind with the new satellite and the plans to follow. Stay Tuned! I definitely think 2016 is going to end with VERY good news for our customers with ViaSat 2's launch and beyond.

I agree, Ty. I will welcome a larger allowance, assuming the next satellite is enough to give me that. Right now 30 GB Liberty is the best I can get and, it isn't enough. Close but, that's with very little (10 mins a day or less) streaming anything and, only one download of over 200 MB per each of my two computers per month.) Still just browsing, email and an a couple of hours of gaming on weekends as well as OS and Antivirus updates (essential ones only) run me over by a few GB most of the time.

That or I have to block all but one computer form the internet for a couple for a week or two and turn off the WiFi on my phone (which is only on when it needs a carrier or OS update anyway.) I have DTV with On Demand, a smart TV, a subscription to Netflix but, I can't use any of those at home. I'd be out of priority data in a week or less if I allowed any of that at home.

Even double (60GB/month) sounds wonderful to me and 150, I would faint if I ever got that much here.

Yes that is unfortunate and confirms the need for better service plans. Even when I run out of priority data I am still able to stream movies during the day and sometimes after 5pm during traffic but not always. I commend excede for the strides they have made and staying in front of Hughes net. Excede listens to their customers and takes strides to improve which is more than I can say for hughesnet.

I agree, Viasat is doing great with making Exede a very workable option for those of us that live where DSL or even antenna based (like New Wave) ISPs do not cover.

I know I won't see DSL or even cellular data here in my lifetime. All I have that's viable is satellite and, Exede is the better choice of the two I could get here.

Pat I have experienced the same problem from the start in January. At the beginning of my second cycle I was sick and didn't even get on the computer for two days and when I did I was already on Liberty pass. So I expect now that two days in I will be on Liberty and carry on. I did have AT&T DSL and it was constantly off and I had to continually reboot. At least my Excede stays on but  even at peak of my Liberty plan I haven't seen anything near 12 Mbps download and the Liberty pass is slower than my old DSL. When we lived in our town, as we are in the country now, I had cable internet and hope it eventually moves out here. Never had problems, the price was right and much faster.

I just been on the Liberty 10 Plan in Virginia for a couple weeks now and apparently with the satellite beam they have over our area now if we go over our data they slow us down to a point where you can not pull website up it is slower than dial up and nothing will load so I am paying for something that I can't even use. I am going to file a complaint with my states Attorney General, The Better Business Bureau, and the FCC

That's interesting, I have had speeds from 15 to 25mbps using speed test and other test sites during my priority data. I know that these test vary so I was averaging 18mbps and maybe because our area was not as congested. During liberty pass I am still able to stream movies most of the time, but if it's slow I can reset and it gets better.

Ty -

I am in the same area as Billy and we started seeing this on 4.20.16 or 4.21.2016.  Exede is clamping down the speed on the Liberty Pass users once into Pass Mode.  During quite a bit of the Peak time speeds are down in the 256 Kbps or so range for extended periods of time.

Basically for anything other than web browsing starting at 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM it i is unusable.  Exede Brad as responded to another thread to say they are working on it, but so far it has gotten a little better but still not anywhere close to as good as it was prior to the changes.

We too are having problems with excessive usage on Liberty 10. We use 1 computer regularly, maybe 3 hours a day, another computer maybe 2-3 times a week for homework, a tablet occasionally and 2 phones every day thru out the day. I probably wouldn't have thought much of the usage if I hadn't had Hughes Net previously and my usage wasn't even 3GB PER MONTH. Someones meter needs calibrated. We don't use Netflix, we don't have any gaming systems, we don't stream Youtube videos or watch TV shows online. There is no way we should be eating up data the way Exede is saying we are. I'm 5 days into my billing cycle and I'm already at 3.5 for the month. I even turned the internet connection to my DirectTV off hoping that might help and it hasn't. I'm in the country so internet providers are few and far between. Exede is certainly the best as far as speed that I've found, but this data usage has me a little perplexed and unhappy. I only carry 3GB on 2 phones and a tablet each month and we barely use 1GB per month so yea, something is not right with how data is metered thru Exede.

My cell phone alone has eaten 1 GB in a day after updating the OS and multiple apps.  Don't be too quick to dismiss these devices as problems.

Hi Brian,  Thanks for sharing that information. It is amazing how a cell phone can use data by updating.  It is a good idea to turn off the automatic update feature in your settings.

Exactly Diana, We have iPhones and an iPad and, those I know will not do large updates until you either plug them in to a computer with internet access or, turn WiFi on in the device settings, then they will do large updates. The largest I've seen was 2.35 GB PER DEVICE so just over 7 GB to update the three I have. That data can be used in a mater of less than an hour and, if you have a 10GB plan and your OS on you computer also does updates, you could easily see all 10 gone in under 4 hours.

I found the same thing and since I have alternate internet, I UNPLUGGED the modem and donated the router and guess what? My data is STILL showing on this bill as being used. So I call bull on "background data". Amazing. Countdown to this waste T minus 21 months. Ugh!

Not Good, when you unplug your modem, it can no longer report to the mother ship data consumption. So what you are seeing is the data that was last reported, not what is actually being consumed currently. The actual data consumed is measured in the modem, not at the ground stations. If you had left your modem plugged in for 24 hours after disconnecting the router, then the Exede meter would have recorded the correct data.
