Data cap is too low

I am at a loss for what to do here, I have the lowest plan you offer, because I can't afford any higher. Within 2 days I have reached my peak. For the rest of the month I barely have use of the service. I am not happy and this is not working. I can't see any value in this plan. Between the rain and the cap it's a lost cause.

I too am simply an Exede customer with a very modest plan and I have made it work for me.  However, I have found that you need to be disciplined in your use of data.  Given that, I would like to explore further what needs to be done to make it work for you.  But, I need more information.  Specifically: what Exede plan do you have and details on what your home network looks like.

R Porea, Xode000 is right, without the details he asked for we can only give general suggestions and, those can all be found here: http://help.exede.net/articles/en_US/General/Maximize-Your-Data

The thing is I am a senior, (somewhat),  I live alone and work in excess of 40 hrs every week,  I have a super antenna, so I watch a good  amount of local tv.  I don't have dish/directv or cable and I enjoy streaming (I have firetv).  The limited amount of time I am home,  and the minimum amount I want to stream, does not compare to what I am getting here.  It gets so bad that sometimes when I want to watch a particular program (msnbc), or a movie, I have to view it on my phone because it buffers too much.    I am getting almost no good use of the service that I can just barely afford to pay for.   I might as well drop this and just use my phone.

Streaming isn't advised on satellite internet (as one movie in HD can use as much as 4-5 Gigs). But  Look at this post to make sure you set your computer to use as little data as possible (I am on the old 10 Gig/Month plan and do quite well coming in close or barely under Cap each month). Please, check out this post and see if it can help control your data usage.

What, pray tell is advised on satellite internet, I would not have this (I'm just gonna say) less than desirable service if I had a choice. For what I pay, I should be able to use my data in anyway I desire. I could spend far less than this with AT&T and get far better service, much more data and a lot less weather related interference! How dare you infer that I'm not using my service correctly!!!

R Porea, this article has some helpful tips to help you get the most out of your data.

I would also suggest and ad and media blocker, like UBlock Origin to prevent unwanted advertisements and media form loading and, using your data.

The following article might be of help as far as fitting some streaming video into Exede internet service: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_video_hosting_services

There also might be technology improvements on the horizon for the companies that put out the streaming video: http://www.nscreenmedia.com/5-ways-better-video-compression-can-benefit-business/

I am on the lowest priced plan that was available when I signed up.  I pay $60.99 a month for Liberty 12 including equipment lease and taxes.  Today is the last day of my billing cycle and I still have over 1 GB of priority data left.

The key to being happy, even with a cheap plan, is to understand the terms of what you signed up for, and to work within those terms.  I've used 120 GB for the month, yet I am only on a 12 GB plan.

Not being able to afford a higher priced plan is not a good enough reason to complain that the cheaper plans do not suit your needs.

Either adjust your habits to make the cheaper plan work, or spend the money on a more expensive plan.

I've made Liberty 12 work for me, and honestly, I'm happier with Liberty 12 than many people seem to be with those expensive unlimited plans.

The free zone is a very good deal if you know how to use it. Fortunately many users have neither the time nor patience to learn that.

I got the Freedom Plan a few months back before it became extinct. Great, great plan.. unfortunately, the marketing allure of "unlimited" which is about misleading as fake news, gets customers to buy one thing at the expense of giving up what can be a better plan.

I love the free zone with Liberty 12. Even if I go over my priority data limit, I still have usable speeds during the day and I still have the free zone.

It's a temendous value.

I'll second you on that.  Here's something else I noticed.  The data usage as shown by my windows network adapter has lately been substantially higher than the data usage as shown by ViaSat.

I get the impression that ViaSat has set things up such that the data gets compressed and decompressed on the fly by the ViaSat modem and/or their core node as it travels through the satellite link, so that your data goes further.  That means that my 12 GB of priority data could have as much punch as 18 GB or more.  It would also explain the 2.2 to 2.5 Mbytes/sec I have been consistently getting when I have my connection wide open.  I suspect that this also makes the Liberty Pass faster and beefier.

It's a feature member designation provided by all GetSatisfaction based communities - see:

https://education.getsatisfaction.com/concept-guide/building-your-community/developing-a-champions-p...

Actual implementation details and the determination of that status are left to the supporting organization.

Because every time they award the coveted blue loving cup to me, I self-demote myself - it's fairly easy to do and the designation sometimes leads to knee jerk reactions that Champions are paid shills - they aren't. We've actually lost quite a few good ones that used to come in here probably for that very reason alone - nobody wants that abuse but I've got a thick skin.

I'm not here for awards or likes, just to offer advice to fellow customers. Take it, leave it, doesn't matter - base your decision on how comfortable you are with the info.

IMHO the Likes are meaningless unless there's a corresponding Dislike feature.

Well, if its okay, I would prefer not to get responses from "champion" representatives, they are not the actual community, and seem to be more representing the company.  I don't need links referencing my issues, and I certainly am not happy that someone changed the heading of my post. just sayin'

Like Old Labs said, we aren't paid or compensated for helping out as best we can around here. Basically it's just Exede/s way of saying "Hey, we noticed you try to help as much as you can."

We help because odds are, if you are having a problem, at least one of us has been there and, we might have an idea about fixing, or at least making it better and, because we like helping, even if we do get accuse of being paid shills now and then. Worth it if we make this satellite internet a bit more enjoyable for a fellow subscriber.

r porea, you're being extremely rude.  The Champions on this board are customers who are spending some of their own valuable time trying to help other customers.  They don't get paid to do this and they certainly don't need to get attitude from other users like you.  They provide a lot of helpful tips and advice.

I'm sorry that you're not getting as much data as you'd like, but that's the reality of satellite internet, which is extremely bandwidth limited.  As higher-capacity satellites are launched, that should ease somewhat, but the satellite you're using was not designed to handle all of the video streaming that has become popular the past couple years.  It's perfectly fine for occasional non-HD videos, e-mail, web browsing, and the like, as long as you follow some of the useful tips folks have provided here to conserve bandwidth.

If you can "spend far less than this and get better service" from AT&T, my goodness, go for it!  What are you doing wasting time with satellite internet?  If AT&T offers competitive plans in your area that is definitely your better choice.  Satellite internet should only be a last resort when there are no other options.

If you're just here to vent, fine, but you might actually have a better experience if you listen to some of the tips from the people who are patiently trying to help you.

Well Matthew, I am not the only one here who is extremely rude!!

As you stated " video streaming that has become popular the past couple years".  What is the holdup? There is no excuse for this kind of service in 2017!

And thank you for your permission to  "go for it"  as far as AT&T is concerned, that's exactly what I needed!

Unfortunately, my condo does not offer AT&T, had I not been sold a bill of goods by the criminals pushing this crap, under the guise of superior internet service, I wouldn't be here now would I?

Finally,  you are so dead on with your statement: "Satellite internet should only be a last resort when there are no other options."  Clearly ...

That and $1.25 could get me a coke from the machine downstairs!

I have the same problem. I am in the country and only had the choice of exede or hughsnet. Last month my data was over in two weeks. I am very careful, no updates, no videos,. I even disable the Ethernet connection on my desktop before shutting down My kindle and laptop the wireless is disconnected and put on airplane mode before shutting down. Today my month started and 4.6 GB gone. Called and they said I was on line 12am to 2,I was in bed asleep no one else online. He just kept telling me what I used last month. I don't care about last month, Today is what matters. All he could tell me was I used it up today. I got post card from Rise Broadband, they are coming out Sat. 300 GB per month, 39.99 plus tax then after 6 months 49.99 plus tax. Half price on installtion, rev 150 now 74.50. A few months ago when my data was used all up they said in Aug they would put a satellite in the sky and offer unlimited GB. The satellite is up but I'm not holding my breath for unlimited GB.

TW, The modem does not report usage real time but, please send an email with your account and contact information to exedelistens@viasat.com and, request a usage review. They can give you a better idea of what your data is being used for.

As for what plans will be offered when Viasat 2 comes online early next year (assuming all goes well between now and then) No one knows the exact details but,  you might want to keep holding your breath, at least half of it. Viasat wants to make streaming and, cutting the cord possible for us - maybe they will do that with the new bird once it comes online.

When I ordered this on 8/10/17 - I was told it would be liberty 12 at a bill of less than $70.00 a month 65.00 + taxes.. when I get the plan it says liberty 10 for 64.99 + 9.99 lease + taxes.. when I called where I ordered it, no one in the office could help.. they don't carry liberty 12 anymore.. but they did when I ordered.. was told to call the salesman that told me that.. I have tried to call him twice to only get voicemail and no return call when I leave a message.. this was just installed yesterday.. not happy to start off on a bad feel the first second it is turned on..  Then it has not even been 24 hours, we weren't even home last night.. and we disconnect our data when we get off the computers.. and we had used 8G already in just a few hours??  I didn't get any paperwork, no customer service phone numbers??

PS.. should we unplug the modem or router when we don't want to use our data?

Hi Justalittlebit, I'm sorry this happened to you. You can find the information the installer failed to give you, and should have at least provided the links to at the following links.
http://help.exede.net/articles/General/Data-allowance-101
http://help.exede.net/articles/General/4274
https://www.exede.com/contact-us-exede/

If you were sold a plan which is not available in your area for a price you did not expect, please contact Exede ASAP using the link above.

Common causes of high usage are updates, perhaps your computers updated when you connected them. If you would like a usage review to see where your data went, send your request and your account and contact information to exedelistens@viasat.com and, they can provide that information for you.

Just a wild guess on my part: the local installer who did your install misled you.  My recommendation is that you document in detail what happened from start to finish and send that to exedelistens@viasat.com.  They should be better able to assist you from there.

Thank You everyone, I guess I have exhausted my reach for what I was quoted vs. what I received.. So I am going to enjoy what I do have and beings I do get to use the internet after my 10G is up only slower.. I guess I have nothing to complain about, unless I want to move back to the city.. and that is a Big NO.. =) Thank You again for all your help.. still trying to read and do what I need to fix things to not use much data.. but at least I am getting a start on it.

I have set up the ability to keep my internet connection speed limited on my end with a speed limit of my choice that I can change or lift at any time.  I have found that it works wonders as far as preventing websites from burning up your data.  The speed limit that I use is 0.15 Mbps (about 3X dial up).  That prevents a lot of data burning by websites yet is not so slow that those websites will decide to time out on you.

The way I speed limit my internet connection is by running windows in a virtual machine under VMWare Workstation.  I then set the maximum speed of the virtual network adapter in VMWare Workstation.  With VMWare Workstation 10 or later, you can change the speed of that virtual network adapter at any time, and even while the virtual machine is running.  My understanding is that VMWare Workstation Player 12.5.2 is free for home use.

Justalittlebit, we were all there once. We all had to learn this stuff. You have the advantage of the experience of long time customers to give you tips and suggestions. Some of us had to learn about this "Bird" brained internet thing with little guidance and no experience. (FYI Bird is what we affectionately call a satellite.)

Please email your account and contact information as well as the name of the dealer and, what you were quoted to exedelistens@viasat.com. I can assure you that they do not appreciate dealers misleading customers and, do try to make it as right as possible for the customers when that happens.

I find it interesting that Dish TV can broadcast without caps and provide multi-channels without having to throttle data while the internet providers all throttle data no matter what plan. The Wi-Fi technology in the modem is also very outdated and inferior compared to what is available. I have disabled my Wi-Fi on my viasa t modem due to limited reach and poor multi users getting signal. Disable your Wi-Fi and use your own modem! At least you can improve things while you get screwed.
