Sandra, I am happy with Exede for my ISP. Exede is limited data allowance, so, you need to choose a plan that suits your needs best. It does have high latency (ping) so, if you are a gamer, some games will work and others won't. Some VPNs do not work, others do. Exede is not suitable for cord cutting for entertainment - streaming uses too much data for a metered plan.

So if you want good internet for most thing, the Exede is great if you don't have any other high speed options. If you want to stream video (movies, TV, etc...) instead of having satellite or cable TV then, not a good idea. If you are a gamer, it can work with some games, but not others so ask about specific games first. If you need a VPN for work, contact them and ask if latency of 600 ms and greater will be okay.

Exede has always been just fine for me.  The only reason I changed to it from my other ISP was they offered more data so we could stream, and we stream all we want now.  Even when speeds are low, streaming is no problem.  You only need a few mbs to stream Netflix, if your settings are correct.

The internet is good.

Presumably you're asking about speed of connection.

There are several factors. First, do not expect the speeds that you get on a hardwired (cable provider or T3 [which your employer might have]) connection.

Then there's weather. Anything that clouds the sky or falls from the sky will slow your speeds. I often lose signal during heavy rain storms. Weather effects apply to the locale where your satellite dish is located and also to the locale where ViaSat's dish is located. In other words, heavy rain at the location of ViaSat's dish might degrade your service even though the skies near you are sunny and clear.

Then there's the number of people using the satellite at the same time. The capacity of the up and down links has a limit. For the sake of comparison (not actual numbers), let's say the links have a capacity of 100 people. Let's say you're the only person connected. You get to use the entire capacity - you'll have great speeds. Let's say 100 people are online. Now you're sharing the line but not yet exceeding capacity. You'll have really good speeds. Now, let's say 150 people are connected. Your speeds will degrade. It's like pushing water through a garden hose. That hose has a maximum flow. It doesn't matter how much water you need or how much pressure you put behind it, you won't exceed the maximum capacity.

Then there are factors outside ViaSat's control. The speed of your equipment. The quality of the wiring and connections inside your house. Nearby routers that might interfere with your router's signal.

Satellite serves a niche market - people who don't have other options. Primarily those who live in rural communities or those living off the grid (so to speak). If you have a cable provider, that's your best bet.

If you can get DSL where you live, that might be a better option. You'll have to decide what you value more - speed or up-time. With DSL you can expect 1.5 to about 6mbs. With ViaSat you will often see speeds twice that of DSL. I've had speeds in the 15mbs range. I've also had speeds in the 1 to 2mbs. Consider also, satellite will degrade with weather (and maybe stop for the duration of the storm) whereas DSL won't. 

So decide what you value more - higher speeds (satellite) with some weather degradation or downtime or slower speeds but almost total uptime (DSL).

I hope this doesn't muddy the waters for you.

It's okay this morning.  Wasn't working last night.  Rebooted modem, both laptops and phone and nothing would connect, so I gave up and went to bed.  So much for watching a movie on Netflix.
It's a crap shoot to be honest. Sometimes it's fast sometimes it's slow, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

It's possible that it was a weather related issue at your gateway.  Sometimes, when it cuts out like that, but doesn't last for very long, it's weather related.

My speeds are for the most part very slow. It is very hard to watch any video service in normal hours. It does pick up late night & early morning. Congestion is biggest problem with too many people on at same time. I wish there was a different choice. Good luck if you sign up. As you can see here, many have extreme problems with customer service,

You are correct that many seen here have problems. I'd like to offer a counterpoint.

This site is primarily for people in need of assistance or who are having problems. Likely, that's what drives them to search for, and navigate to, this site and then speak their minds.

People who don't have problems, which is the vast majority of ViaSat's 650,000 customer base, don't look for a site like this. No one comes to a site like this to complain about good service. Most likely they don't even know this site exists.

So, it's no wonder that there are more complaints about slow speeds and poor customer service than there are statements about good speeds and good customer service.

I'll add, I've been with WildBlue\Exede\ViaSat for a few months shy of six years. My experience has never been anything less than positive. My speeds are good (as good as satellite can be), my service is reliable (as reliable as satellite can be) and customer service has been excellent.

Sandra, I have Spectrum broad band in South Carolina with much higher speeds (60 Mps) and significantly lower costs ($45). I have Exede here in Michigan so I'm disappointed in what I feel is less value. Unfortunately, in the situation we are in, satellite is our only option (other than via some cell phone companies). May I suggest you contact the other satellite providers in your area and compare prices and speeds. I believe they are all "limited data", which is the biggest problem for me. I had HugesNet for a while but switched to Exede because it was less expensive. I agree with everything that has been posted by the others here.

My exede is terrible. Mostly slow speeds. Right now it us offline, no connection. Doing this by phone hot spot.
Of course I will have to pay for my monthly service and have to deal with customer no service. Since it is weekend that will be worthless. I have noticed my internet connectikngoing on and off the last week. You might get lucky and get good service but many have horror stories.

I am with you Tim. No internet connection for majority of the billing cycle but you still have to pay for what you couldn't use but Exede doesn't try to compensate you for it or lower your bill. I just found out that Exede doesn't have a firewall for its network thus we as the consumers are at risk of having our internet used anywhere in the country. So while we don't have internet connection, someone in FL, Cali or Indiana maybe enjoying their TV and internet connection for free, compliments of you and I, Tim.

So while we don't have internet connection, someone in FL, Cali or Indiana maybe enjoying their TV and internet connection for free, compliments of you and I, Tim.
How would someone be using YOUR internet somewhere else?  Isn't YOUR modem tied to YOUR service?

I think there are some misconceptions in your comment.

Your service cannot be used by anyone else, because it is tied to your modem.  Well, ok, if someone stole your modem, lived within the same spotbeam, and had an Exede dish and TRIA, they could use your service.  Otherwise, nope.

well it worked good for me up until about 7-8months ago, now even when the Ethernet cable is off the back of the modem I still use up my data. customer service claims "they can NOT help me" other than reboot of the modem (which I can do that on my end just fine) google can be your friend just read around on reviews and you will realize satellite is not an option for anyone(although they want to make you think it is your ONLY option,it is not) keep looking.

Yes it does, they verify your 911 address when you sign up for Exede Voice. I have used my phone to call 911 via Exede Voice, the first responder got here before the dispatcher verified my address - she was busy listening to what the reason for the call was and, finding out what services I needed.

It very well may, but even with all of the power interruptions I've had while living here for fifteen years I've not once had my landline phone go out.  It's far more reliable than the power.  And I keep a non cordless phone for the occasions when the power does go out.  

And, though I've found my satellite internet service to be quite reliable (over 99% overall), the power going out, or just a storm,  would kill the Voice service.  

Still, E911 working with Exede's voice service is definitely an advantage for those that don't have a landline and whose cell service is shoddy, at best.

All depends where you live. My landline was absolute crap. Ditched it a few years ago. Best decision I made to stick it to ATT, but then they go buy Directv and ruin it....grrrr. But maybe with Viasat-2 I can cut that and go strictly video from the internet.

I do wonder sometines, how did we ever live without E911? Decades without it but some people want to pay $100's of dollars a year for it because they can't come to giving up on an old copper landline from the 1930's.

Just an observation, it's peoples' money how they want to spent it, so if they want to, more power to them!

Aside of everything I already mentioned about why I actually need it, I just like my landline.  It's what I'm used to and it's always crystal clear.  It never lets me down.  If I had better reception I might think about dumping it, as it is getting more expensive, but, to me, not more expensive than it's worth.  At least not yet.  :p
