Honesty in Big Business

BBC reported today that the German government has fined Volkswagen another billion euros for lying to the government. This is on top of the US governments huge penalties.

If a major company did not fear lying to governments, what hope does the feckless consumer have.
There used to be a time when big corporations would not lie because they valued their reputations too much.
I am not implying that Viasat lies. I am only implying that the consumer has to be skeptical and vigilant in this day and age. The norms of business have changed during the last 50 years.
99.999% of consumers are not qualified to evaluate whether a company's software calculations are truthful.
