http://www.theverge.com/2015/6/1/8696949/windows-10-feature-loss as mentioned here about Windows 10 home addition, unlike existing versions of windows Windows 10 home will not let you set it to notify you of updates but let you choose to download and install. They are saying with Windows 10 home edition the updates will download and install as soon as they are available with no options to change that. So be ware if you upgrade to Home edition or buy a new computer with Windows 10 home on it, that the updates will use your data at will with no way of changing it at this time.

We're researching this now -- looks like it'll be about a 3 GB download. Smaller than the last Apple upgrade but still pretty gi-normous.

While the initial update is about 3GB, Microsoft has declared Windows 10 the "last" version of Windows. They are planning (as of last time I read the articles) to release periodic "substantial" updates instead of weekly or monthly patches. What this will mean to Exede users on limited data is that it is very likely when these releases come out they will put a strain on your data for the month.
Other than making some manual adjustments to Windows 10 as noted below, I am not sure there is a good answer for folks to control these updates.

I have a box full of BS windows updates and upgraded programs that made the previous and very expensive purchased programs completely obsolete. This is all an effort to continue to control market share just as Apple does with their BS OSI operating system.
The sooner they start loosing this Market share the sooner they will realize some of us are not as dumb as they think we look!

It's not just the home editions of Win 10, as the Pro edition works the same way.

I believe the Final release versions of Windows 10 are supposed to let you turn off the automatic updates. That was last I read, now that is always subject to change up until the day they release. I do know that Microsoft is banking heavily on Cloud synch between Windows 10 devices. Bottom line is I will probably stay with Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8.1 Pro if we are forced to leave auto updates on at all times.

When I reserved my copy of Windows 10, it said I would be notified when I could download it and perform the install. Sounds to me like I could do that during LNFZ for those of us that have that option.

Im hoping that's the case and it don't just say hey I'm downloaded when do you want me to install.

This is what Microsoft says about the installation:

On second thought... Maybe the download is done in the background, prior to "installation". eeek!

I am not planning on taking the upgrade to Windows 10 at present. First of all, I have no issues with Windows 7, second, I will wait and see what kind of problems, beside the being a super bandwidth hog, that will come with the new release. Typical of new releases, there will be some issues that I would like to avoid. I have a PC and a laptop in my house, and since I can't select the time to download I could be seeing a 7 GB hit on my 10 GB monthly data allotment, that is not my idea of proper data management. I do hope that Microsoft changes the options for downloading both the operating system, and subsequent updates to allow the user to manually select the downloading. There are many of us on limited data plans.
Thumbs down to the Microsoft folks for not allowing any options for the downloading of all their new products.

Confirmed on Microsoft Forum. The Windows 10 download is performed in the background (~3GB) and the notification occurs after it is downloaded. Your only option is to turn off Windows auto update downloads and change it to manual. I guess I am going to take that path. Supposedly July 29th is a magic date.

So the 3 gig dl. doesn't make any difference until we are set up with 10 and then we lose control right Jeb?

Correct, the download will not happen unless you click the reserve button to reserve your free upgrade to windows 10. If you don't want 10 or like Steve said he's going to wait sense you do have a year to opt in then you don't have to worry about it right now.

I altered the permissions of the GWX.EXE file in windows/system32/GWX . I made myself the owner of the folder and file then deleted GWX.EXE.

You can always go to Control Panel/Programs and uninstall update KB3035583. That's the one that installs the GWX (Get Windows X) and creates icon and notification. I think there will be another round after July 29.
Only one of my five active computers came up with a clean install for Windows 10. Oddly, the oldest one. Three posted conflicts with BlueTooth drivers.

Ask me why I hate Microsoft and all their BS! Wonder what else won't work once you navigate to the new that forgets all the old?

You should hate Apple too, then because they use the same update method.

Spot on Nick, read down a little in these posts!
I am very, very far from a computer geek and not at all fond of changes. I am working from a Chrome book laptop that is just as simple as I prefer to be. My desktop PC and the Ipad are all over in the corner wearing their Dunce Caps!

Posted this about 2 months ago and it still works. I beta test Win10, and upgraded 2 pcs last night. Here it is again. For what it's worth.....
I found another helpful fix for not allowing Windows updates also. Search for this file "add_gpedit_msc_by_jwils896-d3kh6vm". This uses the GPEDIT.MSC command to administratively Set Windows to NOT start any update downloads before Midnight Have to set that time)
Type in gpedit.msc in search of run window.
Click on first Administrative Template
Click on Windows Components
Click on windows Update
Click on configure automatic updates
In window that opens, Mark Enable
Below set time to 00:00
I also checked Install during automatic maintainance
At bottom of window hit Apply and OK.
Worked perfectly last night. Checked eSVT and all downloads were after Midnight.
So far, So good!!
This command is already in Pro and above versions and the above file makes it work on the lower versions of win 7, 8, 8.1, 10 Tech Preview.

I was planning to set my router to only allow access to the Windows update site during the LNFZ. My router has ww-wrt and I'm fairly sure it can be done.

Best place to put the block/allow as it is the gateway to the modem, and everything has to go through it. I have my router setup to do just that .
Since I have had that setup, I am having no problems with over data limits.

Did a little investigating on Windows 10, and I at least am no longer concerned about the "Automatic Updates".
I found out that this is only for the Beta testing, and it will do updates the same with the same options as Win 7, etc.
The info I found was on the Insiders Blog.
Hope this helps. I made Me feel a lot more at ease.

I feel like I am stuck in the mud with both MS and Apple. They should be paying us to keep all their crap updated so we continue to use it!

Sounds like all new Window OS launches, riddled with unwanted stuff. I suspect they have a fix for this, no one wants forced downloading.
Microsoft does this all the time, they like force things on you. Like when they aquired Skype, killed off the Windows Messenger so people would use Skype for instant messaging. Or with Xbox One, forcing you to online when playing a game or the game wouldn't play.(This got fixed quick)

Watch out too all Win 7 and Win 8 users will get a popup on the task-bar wanting them to claim their free copy of win 10 from Microsoft. While that popup is truly from Microsoft if you do upgrade make sure you know when its going to download sense it's 3+ GB.

It's called I do my research and read over Microsoft's website about windows 10. They are saying the download is about 3GB and as far as when it will download it will be any time after the July 29 launch date.

If you read what I wrote Bobbie, I said "I do my research" and as far as the download it will only download if you opt-in for the free upgrade. If you don't then you ave nothing to worry about, but you only have till July 29, 2016 to decide if you want windows 10 free.

Why does "Free" always scare me when it becomes very expensive once we find out that MS Office and other programs like Word won't work any more with the new Win 10 that does not support these older versions?

Microsoft is using Free like the government today is using Free in America. You are free as long as you don't mind the monitoring, surveillance, violation of privacy, detention without probably cause, and overall trampling on your rights as a citizen.
Microsoft will be (along with Apple and other big name vendors) doing the same thing. Hey you can use our free software, but in return we get to do all kinds of things with your personal information or data we collect in order to make this product better for you.
I don't wear a tin or aluminum foil hat....but I think I need to consider getting one very soon. Is that humming the drones flying around my house........

At present, all of My MS Office Ultimate is working with Win 10. If....It quits after RTM,,, that would be a real bummer.

If I get stuck with forced downloading with Automatic Updates.... will go to Services and just disable on startup and stop it.
Already hearing horror stories of a person downloading a graphics driver, the driver not compatible so the person upgrades the driver, Window redownloads the incompatible driver.
