My first postmon this issue got archived after 5 days because, according to Exede, it was old. My guess is it had some proof as to why web performance can be bad and that is a no-no. Can't
have ya'll informed now can we. Speedtest.net can test your speed and ping. Exede gets an F in that category as you can see when you click on the above link. I am getting just under 10mbps speed right now yet I can't play Farmville 2 on Facebook. I am on the new version of Firefox and my flash player is up to date. It takes 5 minutes or more for the game to completely load and what should only take a few minutes turns into hours. So, peeps, check out your ping numbers too as well as speed. AT&T has merged with DirecTV so hopefully I will have another option available in the near future. My only 2 were Exede and Verizon DSL and they didn't have a port opened at the time.

Ping has nothing to do with speed. You havr enoufh knowledge about satellites to be dangerous, but not enough to understand......no offence. But ping is the amount of time it takes for data to make a round trip from your computer ...to destination.....and back to your computer.

Comcast, cox, verizon have wires on earth and fiber optic.....when it comes to satellite....speed of light is only so fast....it takes time for radio waves to travel......THAT is why your ping is high...

Is it good for internet.....no....long ping times cause time outs, and performance issues.

The speed you said you were getting was not bad....your ping is bad....but so is every person with satellite.

And as a working directv tech, yes, good things on horizon.....but its not cheap

So why does Ookla and others state the a long long time can and does affect gaming? Can you tell me what the issue is? And is satellite cheap? I am pretty sure it's not. So why does it take 5 minutes for a Facebook game to load, please explain.

Oh wait, you said why. A long ping time can cause time outs and performance issues. Thanks, that is exactly what I am trying to convey to others as I am experiencing performance issues with my Internet service. And yes, I know what ping is vs speed.

I thought radio waves traveled at the speed of sound, so thanks for the info on that. And the analogy is good too. I live in Texas near the coast and I don't know how that affect me as far as satellite goes. I do appreciate all the information I gain from the forum, I am not an expert nor do claim to be. I believe the more information people have about this service the better. Customers deserve the truth even if it means not capturing a few. So many people don't have any idea and it'd sad. I personally want to be educated and informed. Thank you for taking your time to converse with me and impart some of your knowledge, it is truly appreciated.

ViaSat has big radio dishes like that of NASA'S DSN(deep space network) to get the bandwidth they do they are using some serjouse power I would say maybe 30-40Kw per dish. They transmit using radio waves which are on the higher end of the electromagnetic spectrum and as such they travel at the speed of light. I saw a video or read something about that just recently related to NASA but don't remember where....anyways know that is kinda technal but hope it helps some.

And with you being in Texas your ping times are probably a little shorter then mine in nc

Check out cdscc on twitter. Yes its NASA'S site in Australia but they talk about tracking the craft and how they transmit and receive and stuff it might help too.
