Once again the phone reps are not well informed. I called to get the modem - 5.00 with ANY plan on Exede.com when I put in my zip code but, the phone rep (Chase by name) told me had to have the 25Mbs plan available to get the WiFi Modem.

Grrr, phone adapter is beginning to have issues so, the modem would solve the problem but, the phone reps are ill informed. Happened with Easy Care too, it was over a month after you announced it here before a phone rep actually figured out how to add it to my account.

I know send an email with account info and I will. Just annoying that the phone reps are not up to speed on what is available to customers.

i agree customer service is horrible. Several months ago I was offered the Easy Care Plan and accepted it with the additional monthly fee. Even gave me the VIP phone number to call. But... oh oh it was never added to my acct  Also I just found out yesterday I have been without virus protection for quite awhile because exede decided to end the virus protection program they were using and I was NEVER notified of the change. . They choose to let the customer worry about finding internet security virus protection and I was never notified they stopped the virus protection plan. I am just aghast at the horrible customer service and agents not knowing what they should to help the consumer.  I am so fed up with this company . I am now looking to replace my exceed satellite service with something else from another dependable company.

Hi Debbie,

F-Secure was a program we offered but no longer do as our agreement expired. With the numerous options out there we stopped offering it as it was nothing more than an add-on.  F-Secure can still be supported and purchased directly by contacting F-Secure (they are not owned or operated by us) if you liked it and want to continue using it/need support.

EasyCare is unrelated to anti-virus. EasyCare covers support for service calls

Even when you see the WiFi Modem under "Choose your add ons" at the website, calling is useless, the phone reps can't seem to add it to your account and get you one. Been trying for three days, it's been escalated but still can't be added even though it is available to me.

OK Official Rep, the Wifi modem is NOT available "nationwide." Thanks for wasting my time with two different calls, only to be told, "well, it is available for NEW customers." As usual, lets treat existing customers like dirt. Yes I tried on line, nothing. Yes I called customer service, nothing. It's just like when you switched to real high speed internet, us long time customers were the last ones to be upgraded. What a company. The curse of living in rural America with no cable internet.

Yeah, even though it is available on Exede.com for my zip code, I can't get one because it's for NEW CUSTOMERS ONLY. Two phone calls and two emails later, I find this out and am told the advertising department will be told to correct the advertising for it.

Let's not post it's available here until it is. I had problems getting Easy Care as well, so lets make sure the reps are up to speed and, it really is available for existing customers in most or all zip codes before telling us we have a good chance of getting something.

I would be happy to trade my wifi/modem/router with anyone for a standard modem. They should be paying customers 10 or 20 dollars a month to take the wifi/modem/router off there hands. Just like everything else at Exede it is sub-standard and creates more problems than it solves. If you have a very basic network and a very small area that needs wifi coverage it might work for you, but most people will need a real wifi router!

Unfortunately, it appears that you're still dinged for $5 per month for WiFi capability (and Exede Voice capability) you don't intend to use ;)

Again no word yet on whether a modem only solution will be available in the future.

My own personal opinion is ViaSat should be concentrating on delivering bandwidth (its core business is providing access) and not marketing gimmicks unrelated to bandwidth to boost revenues.

I think for the most part the focus is getting Viasat-2 up and running. Unfortunately the "all in one hardware" solution is here to stay, not just for Viasat but the industry as a whole. While I dont like it either, it is what it is.

I have nothing against an all-in-one solution per se for those who aren't comfortable with getting their own router.

I do have an issue with not having a choice and being charged extra for that "privilege" when I have no intention of using it - yeah it's only $5 but that's 20 less nuggets available when I'm at McD's becoming a heavier internet user.

I'm not in favor of all-in-one units either.

Lack of external antennas has to hinder performance to one degree or another particularly with the 5.0 ghz band.

Routers (usually) perform best in a central and elevated location, tough to do with an entire Modem.

Then we have the fact that wireless is a bit more "slippery". Users of Hughes that have the newest modem/router combo unit are reporting see a 5th SSID (two 2.4 and two 5.0). Hughes is saying that this feature is currently unavailable and may allow for future expansion.

Me, I want as much control over all aspects of my network.

I'll keep my Asus RT-AC3100.

I run ASUS too, dual band with extended antennas and USB ports to support a memory stick and network printer. I don't see me giving that up for any built-in modem router. It just woud have the functionality I need.

As of tomorrow, I will be giving the Boost 25 Wifi modem a go. I've never had one and, this will be a chance for me to see first hand how it compares to my stand alone router I use now. If it isn't enough, I will use my router instead.

I do like the idea of leasing the Modem with EasyCare - makes it only a phone call away if it ever has a hardware problem to get it fixed. No more buying a new router every 2-3 years (or in one case 2 DAYS later.)

Be Aware the Exede WiFi router in their "new" combined Modem/Router/Voice unit does not do the job. I thought this would be a good idea but it is NOT. I warn any prospective user do not move to this unit because it costs $60 per year and there is no way back if it doesn't work for you. You are stuck paying for something that is useless !!!!

I increased my EXEDE data plan and at the same time thought it would be nice to have Modem, voice and WiFi in one unit, even if it costs and extra $5 per month .....WRONG.

I found that the EXEDE WiFi modem is not anything like as effective as my old Netgear N400 WiFi router, with the EXEDE WiFi I can no longer access my Office computer (two floors down from the modem). This make the EXEDE WiFi mode not fit for my purpose so I wanted to return it and go back to the old set up ....EXEDE says I cannot do that so I am stuck paying $60 a year for a useless WiFi router. The response from support (Supervisor) is "We do not guarantee the range of the WiFi router ...but no, you cannot return it".

What reputable retailer or business expects you top pay for something that does not work in your envirnoment and is therefor not fit for the purpose it was leased (or bought)?

Now to be clear the router does reach my office computer (with one bar) but a page is very slow in loading and mostly it just times out without loading the page. Naturally I have plugged my own Netscape router into the EXEDE modem and that functions perfectly well, as it has done for years.

There is no choice for me , as long as I stay with EXEDE, I have to pay $60 a year for their WiFi router that is useless in my situation.

I am writing to the community to warn OTHERS of the serious limitations of the EXEDE WiFi router in their "new" combined unit (It is much less effective than a six or 7 year old Netgear router). Think very carefully before you switch to the EXEDE combined modem/WiFi/voice because if you move to it and it doesn't work for you you are trapped into paying for something that is not fit for purpose ....remember it costs $60 a year forever and "there is no guarantee that it will work" for you.

I have to disagree with your comment about internal antennas having lesser range in all cases. I have been installing the Netgear routers with internal antennas for years now and the range is excellent. Now I DO carry the Netgear Nighthawk series, which has external antennas, for house over 4,000 sq ft or houses that have had additions added on or other "unique" situations. The Netgears are also true dual band units so the customer has access to 2g and 5g freqs which is very handy because in some situations, such as at my house, the 5g seems to work better.

Old Labs ...thanks, as I mentioned, I simply plug my old Netscape router into the EXEDE box and I have two WiFis to chose from (one which works the other which does not!)

Bev - I have never heard such rubbish.

Gwalk900 - I am afraid I don't have your common sense as I wrongly assumed with leaps in technology that a "one year old" box would have improvements over a six year old box. Clearly I know now this is wrong so I am telling anyone who will listen please learn from MY mistake.

Gwalk900 - You may spill $60 worth of beer a year if you are careless, but if someone poured two pints of beer into your one pint mug and then expected you to pay for two pints rather than one, I trust you would not be amused. (ie paying for something that you couldn't use).

Apparently you don't live in an area where the kids that visit the few residence out here, or the ones that walk the tracks can't afford internet at home so, go about trying to steal any wifi they can find on phones or tablets.

I do, shorter range, means a lot fewer alarms over unauthorized devices (yes I have a tracking program that alerts me to new connections or, attempted connections) trying to connect - especially on weekends.

Only one that tried last weekend was my step son - he isn't allowed to use my internet because several years ago, when I did let him use it, he pirated a couple of movies. No need for details here but, suffice to say, I am against that and, so is Exede/Viasat. (Yes I made it right with the studio that produced those movies as soon as I found out he had pirated them using my internet connection.)

Charlie's point is a simple one under the plan that he acquired the Exede WiFi modem, he's being dinged $5 per month solely for WiFi functionality that's not needed nor workable. As I understand it, to even get some benefit out of that modem at this point he'd have to upgrade to Boost 25 - in this case it's still not clear if that's simply another $10 on top of the $5, or the $5 is folded into the $10 - hidden (or not so hidden) charges.... gotta love 'em - just give me the out the door price ViaSat - yes I do want valve stems and balancing with my new tires. Air would similarly be nice.

He's not the first to note that you can't go back and it's analagous to "we have to pass the plan before we find out what's in it".

And we all know they don't guarantee any usable speeds, the only thing that is guaranteed is they will get your money!
