The Exede router adds $10.00/ month to the bill if you get it..If I change plans should I pay the extra $10.00 forever or should I purchase my own router and save money?

In my opinion - No. I see no reason to pay $10 a month for a router when you can easily get one for less than $50 which will work perfectly with Exede. The only advantage I see is freeing up a little space on your desk. If speed is important to you and you can get speed boost you may find the faster speed worth something to you.

Hopefully you had all of your questions answered, Lawman. Reading through this thread I would add a couple of things. One is that the WiFi Modem (which we call 'SurfBeam 2+') is a more advanced modem than our last one (SurfBeam 2) whether you have the speed boost or not. It's got an updated chip set and just works better (it's also forward-compatible to our next satellite). On the question of whether you should have the ViaSat router or a third-party router, it's an evolving question that relates to the bigger picture on service.

Up until recently, internet providers have focused mostly on getting the 'pipe' to your house and letting you figure out the rest. What we and other ISPs are moving to is a broader approach to service that takes into account the Wi-Fi in your home. Many of the calls we get into our Care center about service are related to Wi-Fi, whether its with our router or a Netgear or whatever. As we know, routers have limitations, and many of those problems can't be solved with a single access point. Simple range extenders can help, but the real action coming down the pipe is with mesh networks, where multiple access points around your home or biz helping to ensure you're internet signal is strong no matter where you are. From our POV, the best way to manage that kind of improved service is to have an integrated modem/router so that you can see and manage all of the devices connected to your service. We'll have more information on what we'll offer in this space as we get closer to launch of our new service later this year, but you'll likely see a lot of ISPs leaning toward integrated gateways in the future for this reason. You'll likely also always be able to use another router, but you may sacrifice some performance in the process.

So paying $10 more a month and using your router may give me better service?  My internet is constantly cutting in and out, my bill is usually well over $200 a month.  I am on the top tier of service and my usage is gone usually in about 14 days and that is without watching movies, downloading anything.....It just sucks!
