Exede is not WiFi, it is satellite internet access, very different from wifi. WiFi relies on a signal sent a relatively short distance through the air similar to AM/FM radio. Satellite sends a signal form your computer, through the modem and, router if you have one, to a satellite in geostationary orbit. The satellite sends the signal to a ground based station called a Gateway, then the gateway sends it to the site you chose to view. The signal then must travel that entire path in reverse to get what you requested back to your computer.

It cannot defy the laws of physics, which means light speed is as fast as it can possibly be and, it must travel 22.230 mile ONE WAY to the satellite, so 44,460 round trip not counting the distance form the gateway to the site you selected. Speed of light is 18,600 miles per second, that means it takes a MINIMUM of 2.39 seconds to make the round trip.

We get speeds exceeding 12 megaBITS per second (not always but, at it's best we do see that) That's FAST given the logistics of satellite internet service.

If your WiFi is slow, it may be your router.

Hi Kaelyn,

Do you have our new Exede WiFi Modem/Router? If you do, please feel free to reach out to us at exedelistens@viasat.com and we'll be happy to help you with your WiFi.

If you have any other brand of router, it's not one of our products. So unfortunately you'll have to contact the company that made your WiFi router directly if you're having an issue. In the meantime, here are 6 tips that might improve your WiFi experience with any brand of router.
