I got a email yesterday saying I had reached my data limit. I bought two more gigs this morning. My data usage now says that I am at 11.8 gigs and things are not working. There is no way that I could have used 1.2 gigs since this morning. I am in a remote location and can only make phone calls using wifi. I am unable now to make phone calls.

Do you have Exede Voice? If so, that should not be affected as that does not count toward your usage. Using another means of wifi calling would be affected by slower speeds.

Something is clearly using your data. Email exedelistens@viasat.com with your account information and, ask them to take a look and see where your data is going.

Updates, backup or cloud services are the most common culprits.

And to bounce of Bev's post some of those updates are SNEAKY and when they complete there's little if any indication that they went through. Email us and we'll review this for you.

EVERYONE has the same problem == yall assume updates, newsflash ,not everyone uses windows and not everyone unplugs the lan cable when they are not using it and checks it from public wifi or cellphone service by logging into the myesvt and myexede dashboards.

Well James we can't be 100% sure until we look at an account directly. Updates aren't limited to windows. Smart phone apps have been annoying as well

And Mac (Apple) devices can be just as sneaky as Windows and Android devices about updates. Linux may be the exception but, Linux users are a minority and, may still have tablets or phones that use another OS.

James, when you say "everyone has these problems" seems like an exaggeration to me. Exede has over 670,000 subscribers. I "all" these subscribers were having problems, this forum would be so overloaded with complaints, rather than the 100 or so that post here with issues. Most of the subscribers are happy with their service, and understand the limitations of satellite internet service.

As for data use by the modem, when the LAN cable is disconnected on the SB2 modems, when that is happening, then an email to exedelistens@viasat.com is the place to start to get the Exede techs to get the problem diagnosed and rectified. It is not something that happens to very many subscribers. I have never found any data usage that is not being recorded by my router. My modem, router and computer operates 24/7/365, and is always connected. These all are run through a battery backup UPS which prevents any unnecessary interruptions caused by the rural power coop power outages. I am not always home, I enjoy spending time at my lake place, and when checking my data usage while I am gone, have not found large amounts of data being used. That data that is used is shown in my router as minor exchanges with my wireless printer, usually less than 100 kbs on a few days.

As Bev mentioned, there are many devices that are updating either apps or operating systems that happen in the background that are using data that we are not aware of, short of having a good router with traffic monitoring programs.
