Exede could offer better plans for less cost. Simple and easy.

It will never happen, they need to pay the high price of this new satellite.

I'm dumbfounded. It is so simple and easy. Why didn't I think of that? Better and less cost. I wish I could muster that level of insight.

But no, I can't. Instead I wallow in ideas of profit margins, cost/benefit, competition, return on investment, supply and demand, shareholders...damn you Business School for clogging my mind with such trivialities when all I really needed to know was they could offer better for less.

Wait!!!!! It's coming to me now. A moment of clarity....why stop at better for less? Why not everything for nothing? That would be like two times infinity better.

If you had a PhD in "Multicultural Pedagogy" you should certainly know how to provide cheap satellite internet.

If people only understood how much it cost to build, launch, and operates Satellites. Multi Million dollars for the satellites, then the receiving and transmitting equipment.

Google ViaSat-2 and read the articles.  Follow links to financial sites and learn a bit about this company (Exede/ViaSat).  Learn some about ViaSat-1 and then what ViaSat-2 will do, for us subscribers.

Before Satellite Internet, you lived in the "stone age" of modern times,  no Internet.  Those who paid the price for Satellite Internet before Exede got paltry speeds and high bills.  Exede is an amazing company that is absolutely driven to take attention (and customers) away from traditional high speed internet providers by offering a competitive service at a lower cost.  Exede already has surpassed phone-wire DSL speeds by more than double.  Customers with DSL rarely saw the speed they were paying for and had a deft ear turned to them at customer service.  It was always the same story  "You live too may feet away from the data center, so your speed is only half" (or less than what you were paying for). It was and still is YOUR fault you don't get subscribed speeds with DSL.

But what about speed issues with Exede?  Do they tell you a "It's your fault" technicality exist, "so just get used to it?"   No, they actually care, and invite you to contact them with your simple account and contact information so they can look into their system and see what the problem is and fix it.

We use an amazing piece of technology to get Internet access where we live.  If companies like ViaSat are to exist, they must be able to show that a profit can and actually will be made on investments made to develop and implement this technology.   The heading on this post says "Exede exploits areas with limited service options" which is an outright lie made by a person that knows absolutely NOTHING about what it took to get the internet to them except a dish was mounted nearby and a wire goes from a black box to that dish and now they have internet service.

ViaSat-1 didn't get there by itself, or for free.  It took money and lots of it.  ViaSat-2 is costing investors about 650 million dollars to see it work and they are the ones taking all the risk of failure from dozens of possibilities for a failure.

We the subscribers are NOT being exploited by Exede/ViaSat.  We are the ones that subscribed, encouraging investors to keep financing the development of products that can benefit our lives the way Exede/ViaSat have by bringing the Internet into our homes and business where once it was impossible.  Who knows what's next?  If investors cannot get a decent return on investments in high-technology projects, we may never see another satellite launched after the ones we have fail from age or other destructive factors..  hey.. back to the no Internet stone age. The investors benefit from building the technology, we benefit from the technology itself and enjoy competitive prices.

To the arm-chair lawyers:  I am NOT an employee of Exede/ViaSat.  I am NOT affiliated with Exede/ViaSat in any way, NOR am I an investor. My only relationship with Exede/ViaSat is my subscription to Exede making me a common customer, only.

Finally:  I live in the hills around San Jose California, with a view of what is now called "Silicon Valley."  There is a virtual smorgasbord of Internet providers around here.  I chose Exede for the cost/benefit  advantages found only with Exede.  Cable Internet is not available where I live, so I chose the next-best thing that supplied truthful realized speed / cost which was Exede.  If anything or anybody is going to be called exploiting customers, it would be DSL operators like AT&T.

So, Craig, if I understand you correctly, you're saying that companies should be able to recover and profit from their investments? That sounds suspiciously like the American way.

I don't know...I still go with the everything for nothing plan. In fact, I'm going to go get me a new car where I expect to pay nothing for it and get forever free service and forever free updates to the latest technology.

And a blender...I really need a free blender.

Ummm.....  Brian...  Aren't you forgetting that new car needs all the gas it will use should be supplied by the evil manufacturer... for free too?  After all since they have so much money they could at least give you lifetime free gas and all the other cars on the road better get off so you can go as fast as that car can go... all the time.

About the blender...   I know one of Santa's minions that will get you one out the back door of the shop, you'll have it by Christmas.  (It's "in the bag")

My Ph.D. in Multicultural Pedagogy does provide me with some insight into inequitable situations. I had no choice but to subscribe to Exede. There are no competitors, in my area. I checked them all. I tried every angle. Exede is the only option I had. Sounds like monopoly, to me (although, I do not have a business degree).

Craig, I appreciate your extensive explanation of why I should appreciate what little service I do have and I am pleased to know that you are happy with your service. Our situations may not be similar. I am quite curious why, after your rousing endorsement of Exede, the moderator felt the need to change the title. It seems to me that they would want to route more viewers to your posting.

Perhaps my solution was simplistic (be nice), It was the only solution left to me for the many reasons Craig provides. All I want is an equitable price that is inline with the service offered.

Old Labs and Brian must work for Exede. Anytime anyone is even marginally critical of Exede and thier garbage can of an internet service they are there to defend as if they own the company. So which is it? Are you on the payroll or are you just so extremely bored with absolutely no life that you must troll this blog each and everyday???

Will, sadly, I don't work for Exede nor am I an investor. Unless a mutual fund has a small stake and then I would own a small and inconsequential part. I'd like for you to be correct. I think you'd feel better if you were correct.

No, I don't troll the forums. I receive email updates of new posts and this one really caught my attention.

Perhaps you misunderstood my post. I did not defend Exede. Although I'm happy with their product and happy that someone services consumers who, like me, are lucky enough to live in the seclusion of a forest in the middle of a major metropolitan city where the best terrestrial access to Internet service is two cans a string.

No, Will, I commented because the suggestion is a patently absurd, oversimplification of any real issues anyone might have with the service and smacks of something more like a jingle than a solution.

Best wishes, Will, with the new Internet Service Provider I'm certain, nay hoping, you'll be switching to soon.

If that is how you really feel that it is garbage can service then cancel it and go back to dial-up.  Then come back here and try to read this forum and reply and tell me how log it takes to load and how well YouTube works on dial up or how fast MSN homepage loads on dial up.  If you have a legitimate issue or problem with your service then send an email to exedelistens@viasat.com other wise if your just going to come here and bash there service for no reason then go back to dial-up and we will see how long before you wish you didn't cancel your service.

Leslie, there is a great expense in developing, using and hopefully improving this technology and like ALL companies the expense is passed on to the consumer.

We (excede customers) are a captive audience, we have no alternative, there is no DSL in my area, the HUB from phone companies for data is too expensive etc.

Excede knows what they can charge and they do, so that is what all the commenters are saying and even though they are saying it, they aren't happy.  Who wants to pay so much for a slow and capped service with so many limitations.

I am probably 99.99% certain that there are no Excede customers that have a cable or FiOS alternative.

So it sucks, but if you want to get on the internet, work, play, view etc. what is a reasonable alternative?

Already switching to Charter who came to my home, installed a pole, wired us underground and charged us nada, zip, zero zilch for it. Unlike this trashcan of an internet company who claimed they had a nonexistant "FREEDOM PLAN' locked us into a bogus contract with a bait and switch and then refused to let us out of it. Now I'll enjoy real internet and real speeds and no throttling of limitation for a REAL and reasonable price. ENJOY TROLLS

Who just changed the title of this thread?  it now reads "Hoping for better plans in my area"  but started off ""Exede exploits areas with limited service options"??

Someone is trying to back-pedal this discussion.

If your reasoning is valid the question then remains. Why change the title? I don't know what Exede is charging you but I can tell you that the rate they are charging me is far beyond competitive.

Craig, GetSatisfaction, the software we use to manage this forum, treats questions by new customers first as a search query, then as a new post. As a result, we change titles to be more relevant to those searches. It prevents us from having an endless number of small posts and fosters community discussions on existing topics. We also change inappropriate, and as Labs said, inflammatory and/or outright dishonest titles.  I know it's jarring to people when it happens, though, and tends to raise suspicions that we're trying to hide something. Thanks for understanding.

Lesliee, we offer service for people in areas who do not have options such as cable, fiber, or faster DSL. The costs built into operating a satellite internet service dictate the costs to customers, but we are always working on optimizing the service to provide the best value to customers who would otherwise have no internet or inferior options. We do not market to customers in areas with better options available to them, and we proudly acknowledge that we are a service for a niche market.

If there is anything we can do to assist you with your service or any questions we can answer, I'd like the chance to do so. Please email me at exedelistens@viasat.com with your account and contact information.

Just a quick check with AT&T shows IF I could have subscribed to their DSL and chose their "Elite 6Mbps" plan it would cost $34.95/Mo. for the first 6 months.  Their web site does not show what the price will increase to after 6 months. This plan comes with 150GB of data and then cost $10 for 50 more GB.  The fine print at the bottom of this screenshot says "High speed Internet from AT&T requires modem/gateway.  Speed claim(s) represent maximum download  capabilities which may vary and are not guaranteed."
So the price will go up after 6 months and the speed is anybody's guess.   AT&T also will collect $99 for installation and did not disclose "activation" fees.  You also must add-in the cost of renting a DSL modem/Gateway.

Here at Exede I pay $98.47 for a firm 12Mbps or better speed, and I also have ExedeVoice® telephone service.  This price includes rental fess of my Exede dish and related equipment as well as the ExedeVoice unit. My price is not going up, I know what I have and and what to expect. I paid no install/setup fees, no activation fees, and nobody is going to tell me I'm too far away from a data center to get the advertised speed.  Faster cost more, thus Exede is more expensive than AT&T but for what I pay, for what I get, Exede is quite competitive going up against AT&T. Next year ViaSat-2 will be in operation and speeds and data will about double for the same cost to subscribers.  There is something to be said for patience.  Exede is already faster than AT&T and next year Exede/ViaSat will be making AT&T re-think their plans and pricing.

Why do people insist on using the title Doctor in their name?  I've never understood that.
