Excessive data usage all of a sudden

In the past 4-5 days my usage is outrageous.  Tuesday night and i had used 11gigs with 8 days remaining. Thursday i receive an email saying that i had used up all 15 gigs. Impossible. In almost 2 yrs with exede, I've never used 4 gigs in 1.5 days. Tonight I buy 1 extra gig for $10. Within 1 hr and no downloading but surfing facebook like i have done for the past 2 yrs, 500 mb had been used. someone want to find out what the problem is before i decide not to pay the up coming bill and discontinue exede.

Been with Exede 7 years, ran into this problem with FB before, when you go across a video it self starts and does not stop, when they up grade FB they turn this on, so you have to go into settings and shut it off and or make sure its still off, just a suggestion, that's what killed me a few years ago,  and I check my usage at least every other day to make sure nothing is going on, we all have to stay away from videos, they take up a lot of G's.  I agree with you, Exede seems to not care about the data isue that a LOT of folks are having know a days, and the outages that happen to frequently, thats my problem, at least 5 times a week

There can always be some usage that "is in motion" in the respect that the usage meter hasn't caught up yet.

As to Facebook, settings can change, the website itself can change.

You also have to consider that a single computer is going to have 65,536 com ports.

If you open a browser ... port 80 is opened. You can see that by open program on the task bar. If you open an email client program like Thunderbird, Outlook or Incredimail two more ports are put into use. One each for incoming and outgoing email activity. Again you can see them as active from the program showing up on the task bar.

That leaves, literally, 65,533 ports unseen.

If I look at my Win7 Task Manager I can see that I have 5 "applications" running (read as "programs" but I also have 101 background processes running:


This is on one computer ... my router allows the connection of up to four wired devices and the potential of wireless devices numbering in the hundreds spread over two frequency ranges.

You may think you are "good" running Win7 instead of Win10 and I agree for the most part but do you know that a couple of Win7 updates several months back cause Win7 to emulate the behavior of Win10 in many regards including causing Win7 to share "telemetry" of your data with Microsoft. That sharing of data comes out of your data allowance.

Look at your ratio of upload to download.

Have you installed a monitoring program such as Glasswire on your Win7 machine so you can get names and numbers ?

You may think that Facebook is all that is running, but I'll put money on the fact that you have a lot more going on under the hood.

You just need to know where to look and what "tools" to use.

I've never updated windows 7 for various reason. i build and repair computers and laptops. I turn updates off when i install windows

As do I.

The next step I think is to determine/explore the "shape" of your network and map all of the potential connection paths to the modem.

There are times where two heads are better than one. It is so easy to overlook something or have one of those "how did I miss that!" moments.

I'm certainly willing to do "ying and yang" with you if you are willing.

Its always in the last place you look.  :)

yes i looked at the ratio and in a 12 minute span it was 269mbs down and 6mbs up

Here is a good one for you, I have shut down my summer cabin for the winter. The power has been turned off for weeks, I am on vacation mode. My account shows I am over my limit. Just another example of great equipment the have in place. No proactive moves just sometimes a reactive move!

get a simple bandwidth meter and watch it closely (I use networx).  FB is a huge culprit. If you have windows 10, it automatically updates and no way to turn it off. Exede has been pretty good for me, but I use it mostly in my EB free zone. Their new Freedom plan looks very nice, just wish they would add a free zone to that, would scoop it up in a heartbeat. We have a provider that claims unlimited service, but in their fine print he claims "network monitoring to make it fair to everyone with "smart technology" capabilities to slow you down to dial up speeds if necessary. Needless to say, a lot of complaining about that.

Pt Reaves AND all the customers on here spending your days commenting and trying to solve yours and everyone elses computer issues.  THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR EXEDE TO BE HAVING CUSTOMERS SOLVE ALL CUSTOMER PROBLEMS.  THIS IS EXEDE/VIASTAT'S RESPONSIBILITY!!!!!!.  , I just went through a nightmare from November 1st to present.  I am so f&&&ing sick and tired of all these random community people commenting on what you should do which really comes down to "why don't you get a computer engineering degree" just to have simple internet service.  I have been with exede for 3 years, and I never ever experienced this MASSIVE DATA USAGE.  I have not changed what I do on the computer....everything is the same.   I believe they are playing around with something to force customers to upgrade their current usage plan.  I have saved so many complaints from this site and from my own notes.  I believe this nightmare should be presented to the BBB and/or Consumer relations because no one should have to deal with this kind of bullshit.  The exede employees are commenting "oh we are so sorry" and they leave the same message with all complaints. They took an extra $30 from bank account this past month (within a 3 day period) from an overuse issue and they never even responded back to (ME) the actual customer.  We are going in the community off into the twilight zone wondering what the F is going on with exede/viastat, bla, bla, bla!!  I have been through all the removing of advertising pages and this is only a minute problem compared to what is really going on here. .I have been collecting information going back to last year on how "exede" just sits in the background and robs your bank account, and lets the community figure out everyone's their own problems.  It is disgusting how they treat people

Still doesn't make sense. I'm been on Facebook enough the past 2 yrs my wife is thinking of a divorce and never had this problem until this week. Wonder what will be more expensive, buying additional gigs or paying alimony? lol

Facebook is a data hog.  All videos and pictures.  "Just surfing Facebook" will use a lot of your data, and it will only get worse because people are using higher definition content all the time.  Do as Bob suggests about turning off auto play for Facebook and all web pages in your browser.  If you don't know how to do that, do a Google search with something like " turn off auto play in Firefox" or whatever browser you use. Also turn off the ads that load on web pages automatically.  Again, it will only get worse as everything is moving to high definition on the web.  Satellite and data cap users are ALWAYS going to run out of data unless they start excepting the fact that they are using the data up and actively change their "surfing" habits.  But the first and most important thing to do is except the fact that it is YOU that is using your data and stop blaming someone else. Unfortunately, that is the hardest thing to do for a lot of people.

Pt. Reaves and many others, the problems will never be resolved until EXEDE IS reported.  Some of the people on here are pathetically answering customer questions posing as computer technicians.  THIS IS JUST WRONG 

I HAVE BEEN ON FACEBOOK ROAMING PAGE TO PAGE, SURFING INTERNET EXPLORER FOR MEDICAL AND GENERAL DATA AND THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED.  EXEDE IS FIDDLING AROUND TRYING TO MAKE MORE $$$ AND FORCE CUSTOMERS TO UPGRADE THEIR USAGE PLANS WHILE SITTING BACK AND NOT EVEN PROVIDING CUSTOMER SERVICE!!  I FOOLISHLY SIGNED ON WITH THESE MORONS IN 2013.

They are now going in and removing random comments if they DO NOT APPROVE but yet they do not put the time in to provide adequate customer service and internet service.  They are real busy creating new data usage plans for 2017.  DOES THIS MAKE SENSE TO ANYONE?

You are spot-on about everything, even the comment about people posing as computer technicians.  Those so-called technicians show a screenshot of their task manager and would have you believe all those entries are network connections being carried by exede, they're NOT.  That is all the inner-workings of Windows.  I also agree exede is messing around and their fun and games are costing US money.
I posted a problem yesterday about how they no longer just slow things down to a crawl when I run out of data, but actually kill the connection forcing my modem and tria to re-sync...at my expense.  They have ignored that thread for some reasons that are becoming obvious.  I am in the "DAP" (slow mode) right now and won't buy another GB until my friends arrive later today with the test equipment to monitor the transactions of the modem and tria in real-time to prove my claim or exonerate ViaSat.  By the time ViaSat-2 is operational, exede may have such a bad reputation nobody will be signing on to use it.  Take note exede, word gets around as far and fast as your satellite footprint.

BBB? FCC?

The BBB exists solely to open a dialog between a company and its customers. The BBB has no "enforcement" powers.

Exede employees will have the word Exede as part of their username.

This Community is made up of fellow users as well as being overseen by Exede employees.

Some users have more experience in a given area than others and take the time to share that experience with other users.

Data loss is a very common compliant among subscribers of data capped services.

I don't consider myself "pathetic" or a "moran" for trying to help someone out. Every ISP has their issues. I was with Hughesnet for years and gave up on them for Wireless until they became overcrowded and wouldn't expand their services. I use Exede as an easrly bird user but also have Verizon. I'm in the city limits but Charter woun't run a line out here (unless I pay $24,000) so Sat is right now my most viable option.

Wait a minute Exede Fans. Again i will state this. I'm on the 15gigs per month. Last night I bought 1 additional gig for $10. As soon as i made the purchase the modem went out. It was out for about 20 minutes. When it reset i went straight to my acct. to see if the added gig had been added. What do I see, usage 15.5 gigs. Now how did i use 500 mbs after the purchase if the modem was out. I ended up buying 1 more gig today. But the problem will be solved by me. I just changed plans an upgrade to the 25 mbs download speed and 150 gigs of total use per month.

Actually I'm Hughesnet.

First thing that comes to mind is connectivity/update/refresh between the gateway and your terminal. You terminal readout is slaved to the gateway, I have read more than once the Viasat's usage meters have a bigger delay than Hughesnet's but it only going to be a matter of degree.

I say, "work the problem", collect data and make a case based on hard fact rather than suspicion, intuition or supposition.

Without data, its just another opinion.

Now I'm really confused.  You came on here accusing Exede of stealing your data and then you upgrade to a more expensive plan and twice the download speed, so they can steal even more of your data?

well I would say it is exede's problem and not always the customer, you can unplug the modem duering late nite free zone and leave it off for days and login using your cellphone and data will still be missing

Until the modem gets a chance to reconnect.
If disconnected, the modem needs to upload its last data. The data is then correlated and then the results need to be downloaded to the modem display.
Anytime you isolate the modem from the gateway you have broken the communication chain. Update/refresh will not be done on dime.

PT, did you ever contact CS and have them check how many devices were using the service? I had found out myu kid was using his cell phone and using data and not known by me until they had checked... Also, I recently posted about data extending from my free zone into metered data, they charge you for all that data unless you manually disconnect and then reconnect, just a thought.

It's only me. My wife's not into the internet. I never use wifi on my cell phone. My hands are huge and and i fumble all over typing on a cell phone. I just use my computer. As i stated earlier i didn't make any changes.

I thought about that but I live in back in the mountains and only have one neighbor and he also has exede. I'm the one that built his computer and setup his system. He and his wife are older than me and right now it's to cold outside to sit in  a car and steal some bandwidth. Now with that being said, last night i monitored my bandwidth. I stayed on facebook as I normally do. I didn't download anything. Just surfed and did a little messaging like i always do. Between 8:12 pm and 8:25 pm i used 276 mbs down and only 6 up. On some of the minutes i used 49.71 mbs per 1 minute. Think of this. I've never gone over my 15 gig allotment in 2 yrs. I ended up using both gigs i bought in a little over 17 hours and now I'm restricted. 

At 1 am I thought i would try something. I went to a porn site and downloaded short video's. While they were downloading I viewed them from the site. So i have a downloads going and the site going. I could never get more than 41 mbs in any given min. and here is a screen shot of the usage. Now remember i used 276 mbs down in 12 minutes last night. Here's what i used in 1 hr doing the above.

Exede is something else. They contacted me and in a way let me know that it is me not them. Funny since I contacted them and upgraded no more excessive use. Like i said I never changed a thing between the time the problem started and now.

Well my conclusion is the same as a few. Play with the usage so we will have buy additional gig's. When we are sick of the addition gigs disappearing (2 in 17 hrs) a lot of us will upgrade and help the bottom line profits of Excede.

Someone has to pay for the new satellite coming our way or new customers way. You all know what will happen when the new satellite is up. New customers will be the only one's to benefit from it and most likely will have unlimited bandwidth for total cost of a Earl Scheib 1960's paint job $29.99

AGREED 1000%.  This is pathetic and unacceptable.  I am tired of this community crap too........it is like going into chat therapy to bash exede and viastat.  Where is it getting us, NO WHERE?!!!!!!!!!!  Except angrier!!!!
