DishNet does not "own" Hughes.
HughesNet is a wholly owned subsidiary of Echostar since 2011 in the same manner as Exede is a wholly owned subsidiary of ViaSat.
DishNetwork as well as Directv "partnered" with both HughesNet and Exede in marketing satellite internet access. Which internet service was available was a function of location and available bandwidth.
As we sat users well know, customer service is a Big Issue. More so on the more complex issues. The way things were structured, at least on the Hughes end was that either DTV or Dish provided the needed customer support. Lets just say that there is a world of difference between support for one-way DBS TV service and two-way Internet.
Hughes is now going active with ES19/Jupiter-2 as will Exede soon will have the services of ViaSat-2 to increase bandwidth and allow further corporate growth.
