Data usage out of control... cannot be right

I have been a customer for over 5 years through a couple ownership changes. We had the lowest plan and 10 GB. Earlier this year we wanted a faster speed and now we have 15GB.

We went over our data when we were taking some online courses this year, but as far as I know, that was the only time. I do work online for my business, have all along, but never had an issue before the online courses. Could have and not known, but I sure noticed when the data ran out from the classes.

Now I received notice that we are almost out of data 9 days into billing?!! No online classes, nothing new or different – no kids to have caused this. We did not have these issues at only 10 GB for over 4 years. (think our very first set up was less than 10GB)

Maybe someone hacked into our wireless? Neighbors are spread out though and I think we’d notice someone sitting in their car/lingering around close enough to receive a signal.

I don’t know what is going on, but for $91 a month this is crazy. I am so happy that cable has finally been run to our tiny area... patiently waiting for them to finish.

Hi Karmin,

We called and the rep gave us the list, but it just isn't adding up compared to our prior 5 years of service.

How can you tell if your router has been compromised?

Hi Buddy,
FIRST THING!!! change your routers password ☺

The exact way of telling whats connected to your router should be your network map. You should see it in your routers admin page as a listing/ tab.

The listing and it's location in the admin, will depend on the router model. But it should show you everything wireless and not/ hard wired, that has a connection at that moment.

Some routers offer a "user" listing of all things that have had a connection previously. If a neighbor tapped your wireless, it might have left a sign-in/ connect IP listing.

Like; your main computer, a printer, if it's networked, any laptop's cell phones ans so on.

Hope it helps, post back if your have other question once you check into your routers admin settings.

The days when someone had to be sitting in our driveway to steal your wifi are long gone.  For a few bucks you can buy a booster on Amazon that will pick up a signal from half a mile away.  With an old wildblue or similar dish, and a coffee can, you can make a DIY signal booster that can pick up a signal from a mile away.

Very good point Starring Matter.

I can remember using a wireless adapter card for a laptop that had an exterior antenna. You could put a Pringles potato chip can oven the antenna, point it around and boost weak signals by 2 bars or more.

If I remember right, I could get free WiFi from a McDonald's over 2 miles away with free line of sight to the burger joint.

I did not realize you could be so far away. Too bad there isn't anyone around here we can hook too. lol

We do have the router encrypted. Actually didn't for about a year 2011 to 12 and still did not have any issues. I needed help changing everything and we did this morning. I could not find the page that gives activity for the router. I will look up how where to find that.

I didn't use the internet all that much and had 5 GB added, plus whatever I had left. Today, we have nothing left. So since I posted we used over 5 GB?? This is crazy.

Thanks so much for the help.

Take that back. The entire 5 GB's added are not gone – we have 4.1 left. Had around 3 GB left from our plan about this time yesterday though. Very strange.

Hi Buddy,
Are you sure there is nothing connected your not aware of.

Cell phones with a WiFi connection?

Xbox or similar game consoles?

Are you using Direct TV, has it been setup to connect to the Exede dish?

Do you have children, and if so, are they connected, via, computer, cell phone, laptop, game consoles, large or small? i was a kid once, and picking a few extra cookies out of the Gig's bowl would not seem bad.

Adblock Plus and FlashBlock installed on your web browsers.

Also, try adding this to you browser's (AVG PrivacyFix). This checks for any tracking from the likes of, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and so on. Ever wonder when you are looking at weed wackers after a Google search, that when you go to Amazon, the first ad's to pop up are about "Weed Wackers". Tracking. the program runs and you might be surprised at what is tracking you.

Hope it helps,
Everett

Hi Everett,

Was told in an email that 55% of our usage was done in one day. That is about 8 GB and certainly was not us per say. The only thing that is questionable is the cell booster. We have not had an issue in over a year and 8 GB in one day... that is crazy. But?

If it wasn't that and it isn't VisSat glitching like crazy (would they ever admit?), then bandwidth may have been “borrowed”. Where we live, everyone knows everyone and it is hard to believe... or maybe want to believe... but anything can happen.

Buddy - If you have your router protected with a strong password, it's doubtful any of your neighbors (except for that NSA guy) are sophisticated enough to borrow your bandwidth.  It doesn't take much though to chew through the data.  I updated my Garmin map a while back and that was a quick 4GB.  Windows 8.1 has an "optional" update sitting out there right now that is 0.7GB and if you accidentally enable cloud services via Google, Apple or Microsoft Live, you can DAP out in a few hours for sure.  Hope you find your "leak" and get it plugged.

Make sure to disable WPS on router as well, it can be hacked through that.

buddy, I'm curious about what you mean about a couple of ownership changes. Hasn't it always been VisSat?

ViaSat purchased WildBlue in 2009.  In 2012 ViaSat also started the Exede service. So, depending upon when you joined, you may have been thru one ownership change, but since 2009, you've always been with ViaSat.

Buddy,

If you get this figured out, please let us know what the issue was. I am not necessarily questioning Exede's accuracy, however, I have requested several times that they provide me with a breakdown of usage (ie. hourly or daily) and the only reply I am receiving is instruction on how to find my usage meter on my account page. This doesn't give the information I need. I am trying to determine my busiest times and like you maybe see if someone is piggy-backing off my system.

I'm a grad student and I spend a lot of time on the internet, yet there are certain times when my computer is dark, so it would be easy for me to determine any errors if Exede would provide me with the information I requested.

Good Luck.

I also have had Wild Blue, then Excede and now ViaSat and just the last few months have gone over my 10gb. Just this month I have used 16gb and just paid for 3 more, as I work from home on the internet all day. I have never had this problem before. I called in and I can not up my plan until it bills on the 1st. It has cost me an additional $60 this month. I am thinking of changing back to Hughes Net.

Hi Edie,
Have you by chance changed anything about your system? A new computer, cell phone, or the like. Windows 8 is known to be a data hog in the cloud.

Just an idea as to why this stared happening. It could be on Exede's end, but best to check your end first and then provide that information to the help tech's.

You can and should contact Kimberly at : exedelistens@viasat.com
Provide your account # and other personal info. She will try to tack down any issues that we are unable to see.

Hope it helps,
Everett

Edie, websites typically measure your internet data speed of your connection, and adjust the resolution, or how  much data is sent, accordingly. With Wildblue, your download speeds were typically .5 Mbs, 1 Mbs or 1.5 Mbs, depending on what plan you were on. With Exede, speeds are typically in the 12 Mbs to 22 Mbs, so the website sees this as a fast connection, and thus more data is required for each website viewed. This is especially a data consumer when pictures and videos, flash ads, etc. are involved. You can reduce data usage by following the tips offered in this thread on the forum https://community.exede.com/exede/topics/data-usage-tips

Edie, you can up your plan at any time. The agent probably stated to wait until the 1st to avoid prorated charges. I can assist you with this if you'd like to switch up your plans. We also have a promotion going on right now called the Great Gig Giveaway which offers existing customers an additional 30GB of data to use over a 6 month period, free of charge. Adding a few GB each month will give you a little breathing room to use the service. If you're interested, please send me your info to exedelistens@viasat.com. Thanks.

I personally don't think that we've been getting our free period, because we went through all of our data and whatever we bought (which was 20+ extra gbs) and I've been trying to only watch videos during my free period.

I will be getting rid of Exede in the new year, because I'm not cool with having to buy over 200 dollars worth of data and I don't like how they don't post the bill until the DAY that they are taking the money out of my account. That's a pretty god awful business practice right there.

Wow....I am really glad to find so many others are having the same type issue with the whole data usage too, it's sad but comforting at the same time.

I have been extremely frustrated with Exede and the fact that until Wildblue changed to Exede I never had an issue with going over the limit, or even being notified I was coming close to going over, and I ran a weekly radio program from home! So I now find it odd that it seems as though every month I am going over at least twice and I barely use the silly thing anymore. I don't do the radio program anymore, all I really do is only check email, browsing a couple websites and play games (which I now do from midnight to 5am so it is during "free time"), and I am still having to call Exede to have them add 5g of my free 15g extra so I can finish out the month without having to pay for overages. To me, this whole system seems to be absolutely too frustrating to remain being a customer of Exede's and I will be looking into another service once I confirm when my contract is up.

Before reading that so many others are questioning the same things as I am completely justified what my next step needs to be. And for that I want to Thank every one of you for sharing your questions and concerns on this forum!!
I guess I should also thank Exede for providing a forum for us to share the good, bad and the indifferent with each other, so Thank you!

Merry Christmas and God Bless!!

Hi Marla,
I feel your pain for not being able to do the many things we have all become use to as in movie and video downloads.

On top of the ideas Steve has offered, there is a program I use that helped me and might help you.

PlayLater and PlayOn: https://www.playon.tv/store/gift/?prmcd=2014gift&rsrc=email&j=2367659&l=902_HTML&e=s...

This program allows you to download movies, videos, TV shows and so on from many different outlets like Amazon, Netflix, YouTube and maybe 50 other places. With the best advantages from doing it during the LNFZ 12 - 5 am.

A second advantage is, you have them on your hard drive for use later as you need or have time to watch, 1 time or a hundred times.

When I first started with Exede, I went through about 5 Gig's in 2 days. Simple math told me, this is not going to work!

I started picking up pointers and help from other forum members and then applied them to my daily internet surfing habits.

Now my wife and I average about .6 Gigs a day and we are still improving our data usage.

PlayOn/ PlayLater is offering a sale now and might be worth trying. We use it a couple of times a week and have more movies and videos than we can watch.

Apply the other auto-play blocking programs and auto-update strategies and you will start seeing the results.

We all want unlimited data, Exede is what we have due to our living locations, and Exede is the best I have been able to find. Use the many data saving tricks and it will improve your internet viewing pleasure's.

Hope it helps,
Everett

Everett, is there any limit on how long you can retain the programs from PlayLater on your computer before viewing them?  Like I have said before I'm more of an impulsive user of Netflix and other services but if I downloaded a few episodes of series I like to watch and could keep them handy for quite awhile on my hard drive it still gives me a few options for the nights nothing else is on, only problem is it ties up my computer so I can't work on things while I'm watching. ;-)

Hi Jacqueline,
No limits I am aware of. I have had some movies for several months.

It basically associates your name, email and IP address with the download. I have transferred the movies to my wife's computer via our home network and they run fine.
