Data loss and Microsoft Update for Win7/8.1

Some time ago Microsoft had released some updates that caused Windows7 and 8.1 to emulate some of the behavior of Win10.

That change caused those OS's to collect data from your  computer and send it to Microsoft under the guise of "telemetry".

The telemetry being shared does count against your monthly data allowance and many users are unaware of this activity.

Be aware that a new wave of updates is being released that will reinstate this activity.

The updates in question are:

KB2952664 (Win 7)
KB2976978 (Win 8/8.1)

I suggest that you review updates very carefully before installation (more difficult now that updates are in the form of roll-ups) and that you look at two areas of Windows Task Scheduler to see if certain tasks are enabled. If so I suggest that you disable these 6 tasks as they represent a threat to your privacy and consume your data without your knowledge.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Task Scheduler > Microsoft > Windows > Customer Experience Improvement Program

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Task Scheduler > Microsoft > Windows > Application Experience

Thank you. My Windows 7 updates stopped working months ago but thanks for the warning.
