Data getting used up quick

received an email saying time to keep an eye on my data useage 70 percent used? are you kidding me? so I looked at the meter after refreshing 4.5gb used of 10gb 17 days left so I went on the webchat and the person said was 7. something. everything conflicts.I find it hard to think I have used 4.5 gig this soon after reset much less 7. something or 70 percent is impossible . this happened last month the same way I got that email and boom all my data was sucked and even my plan had been changed for no reason.

unable to respond to that email for some reason, we only use youtube at free zone.so maybe free zone is counting toward our useage agin same as last month?

my data useage is crazy cannot understand we used to never use up our data with the 5 gig plan now we have the 10 gig plan and run out with 10 days left in cycle??? Something is very wrong

Well that is why I am in here looking for why my data usage is so high over the last couple of months and getting worse each day.  I know when we use EXEDE for extra stuff and when we do not.   Thinking about changing.  What information is needed to send email?  If I go to liberty play why is the spread in speed so great, between 1 and 4?

well I was talked to very rude by the last rep  normally I only used around 4gig this time of month and now sitting at 9.0 used, yesterday it was at 4.5 used and even then that is insane since we have 16days left. there is obvesly a problem and they are telling me I watched youtube in the day time when it has not happened ,only duering free zone. all we do in day time is light browse. same thing happened last month and it is becoming the norm.  I have been dealing with computers since windows 3.1 so don't try to tell me my router has been hacked when I am 5 miles in the woods with nearest neighbor being elderly with no pcs 2-3miles. my network is locked down tight and password changed several times a week. don't talk to me like a dumb person cause I even tested it by unplugging the lan cable from the back of the modem and low and behold still data being used. same exact thing happened last month and my plan got changed without our consent and had to argue to get it fixed.and don't go telling me the modem has to catch up  because I allowed it 15mins before I unplugged the lan cable

It is due to the number of user on the internet at that time. Internet usage across all carriers experience heavy traffic on the network during that time. 

This occurs if you are on the Liberty Pass which means you have reached your Priority Data limit. You are not restricted, just slowed. You always have the option to purchase additional data.

Yes, me too. Thing is I have the 25 GB package with free zone at night. So here I sit waiting for the free zone to do my online course because my usage is already at 44%???? I mean this is every month. Sure they have given me a few free gigs now and then. Did you know you can call and request a reset which is only really 3 free gigs? I think you can do this once or twice a year. Still, we each have 5 gb on our phones, we use the free zone which screws up our schedule and I am a Computer Support Specialist so our laptops are fine. Please someone tell me why I have to spend $200 every month, 25 gb plan plus extra gigs. And is constantly :congested" as customer support says.

sue if u have free zone I would keep it and not change because you can never get free zone back agin. mine was changed last month on their end and took us forever to get it put back how it was.

I was checking out the evolution plan which has a free zone of 3 - 8 am instead of 12 - 5.  lol  better for this old lady.  They say it is not available here.  It seems like the same plan but different free zone times.  Yes I think it is better to pay for a little extra data when I need it rather than pay $10.00 a month and be slowed down anyway.  Until they started the LIBERTY plan if I ran out a day or so before the reset, I never got completely bogged down like I do now. I guess they want to make sure you suffer a little if you go over.   Thinking about dish network, but haven't heard much about it.

Sue, Dishnet internet is subcontracted through either Hughesnet or Exede, depending on the area you are located, and the dealer's preference.

I used to have hughesnet and did not like it.  I love exede as long as it is not eating my data so fast.  Dish has a pretty good deal, it is advertised being a little slower than exede.  But a lot more data for $20 more.  Just weighing my options.  If it was contracted with exede I know I would do it.

Not sure if this will help but I've noticed that Windows has been releasing for very large updates for Windows 10 in the past few months (I noticed it in November).

I had two machines that were off for about 20 - 30 days between mid December and January. After powering them back up, they both downloaded a total of 7 GB for just Windows Updates.

I say all this because I have a hunch many users are experiencing large update downloads from Microsoft that are eating through their data cap without them realizing it.

If you are using Windows 10, you need to be aware that it will download very large update files which can take you by surprise as the download happens silently without any notification.

Since most of the usage in my household is web browsing, the Liberty Pass has worked quite well for us but it seems success varies widely depended on which area of the country you live (i.e. which beam you are on).

Windows Updates may or may not be the issue for Jared & Sue but I thought I would share my experience in hopes that it might help shed some light on things I've noticed in the past few months.

One last point, if you are a computer that is eligible for the upgrade to Windows 10. Microsoft has started silently downloading the upgrade to peoples machines without them knowing. This is another source of frustration for a lot of people since you have no idea this is occurring except that your data allotment is being used up at an alarming rate. There are a few other posts that detail this and what you can do to prevent it. Feel free to reply to this message and I'll get some more info as well.

On February 1, Microsoft changed its Windows 10 upgrade policy (for windows 7 and 8.1) once again as it now becomes a "recommended update" and Microsoft remains tone deaf to the concerns of users who are on limited data plans (whether a hard or soft cap). The culprit is the seemingly innocuous GWX (Get Windows 10) GWX at a meager 721 KB - 820 KB as shown below:



It's this "bad boy" that's downloading the Windows 10 upgrade in the background without your knowledge - "proactively to make upgrading faster" and going forward will likely keep updating the download to ensure the latest version is always available once you relent and install.

Uninstall the specific update and hide it to prevent any further damage. Also ensure that your Windows 7 and 8.1 update options are set as follows:



It's no longer enough to say "I don't stream, watch videos, visit YouTube, etc.). You have to know what's being done in the background on your behalf. For that you need to install a robust traffic monitoring application on you computer - very few of us know what's going on without our knowledge and Glasswire is a good choice for those on Windows (https://www.glasswire.com/). At the very least, you might be able to make a stronger case that ViaSat is "stealing" your data by backing that claim up with a traffic monitoring application.        

None of this is meant to imply that excess usage cannot be attributable to Exede modem or installation problems, but assertions that "there's no way I'm using that much data" without backing it up with some substance will get nowhere fast.

Thanks,  I have my windows 10 internet set as METERED.  And the NORMAL updates do not get installed until I go in and ask for them.  I have the other set as suggested, to check but notify me.  If Microsoft is putting WINDOWS 10 on computers without permission I would be open for joining a class action law suit.  I get tired of those popups asking to upgrade anyway.

Well maybe if you actually shared some information regarding your environment, you might receive some targeted advice - our vulcan mind melds don't appear to be working today - or just continue to make an arbitrary claim that your datas being sucked up, your call.

What's funny is that most of those making the claim fail to provide any supporting detail (being a user of computers since Windows 3.1 is irrelevant unless you're still using it - no more relevant than my being a user of computers since the days of paper tape and punch cards).

but what also makes any of that information useless is the point it is happening while the lan cable is unplugged from back of the modem. and that they show me watching youtube duering daytime hours which has never happened and data transfer while the lan cable was unplugged. think that might mean they have issues on their end and need to stop blameing the customers. while sometimes it is customers issues this is clearly not because it is pretty frequent with a lot of customers. to use 10 gig up in 1 day you would have to at least have the lan  cable from back of modem hooked up  ?

what's wrong champ? there is nothing more that can be said other than "we exede realize there are issues on our end" brad I have sent many messages to the email address, last month is was sorted out and now is doing it agin. last 3-4 times case has been closed immiditly with no chance to respond and same thing over and over telling me how to better manage my data which has nothing to do with me manageing it.

No, I criticize Jared because he provides nothing of substance to support his claim.

Instead when asked for information or something to support his claim, he responds with nothing, non-sequitur or an ad-hominem attack on Exede/ViaSat just as he did over in the HughesNet community (with the same/similar complaints) before switching to Exede (and apparently before he was booted from that forum based on his initial post here asking for information on HughesNet - I follow that one too since we have shared problems when it comes to satellite internet).

I too suffered an unexplained Exede data loss some three years ago and proved it but it takes much more than simply unplugging a cable unless you know how and when the meter is updated (that too can be determined with a keen eye but the technique Jared describes only work on HughesNet not Exede - see https://d2r1vs3d9006ap.cloudfront.net/s3_images/1123173/24046-tam50s_inline.jpg?1416580378). In the process, I also learned how to accurately track and substantiate my data usage. FWIW, that loss was never fully explained however what caused it has long been fixed (and my own traffic monitoring has correlated with the usage reported by Exede ever since and stands at the ready to substantiate any future unexplained losses).

If he wants help he'll find it but his posting history suggests he doesn't and is content to simply argue - reread my entire post above (following Joshua's regarding Windows 10) and don't skip over the last two paragraphs next time - barring that simply accept Exede's general categorized breakdown of usage (not really useful) and move on. 

Jared asks: "whats the matter champ" - nothing I'm not the one with the problem.

Be careful too of your smart heaters or anything with a remote. They can also use up data, so I am told. LOL.

Actually, I was shocked when the service guy who replaced my heat pump recommended that I not use a smart thermostat because it would use up too much data on a satellite/metered connection.  I don't know if I really believe that, but I settled for the non WiFi thermostat.

The Nest uses about 8-9 MB per day as I recall from some other forum where a user tracked it for a month. Add on the Nest camera and it purportedly uses an average of 15 GB a month - that might explain why I just got a warning from Dominion Power that I should be using the other slot on the toaster for single slices ;)

LOL!!  Old Labs!  We just had a new HVAC system installed and opted for the wired t-stat as opposed to a smart t-stat. 

I just received an e-mail from Exede granting my request for more data until my plan cycles on the 24th due to my recent troubles.  They provided me with 5G until then.  Pretty good since i was at 14.1 of 15, nine days before cycling...

Lots of good info for Windows 10 here lately.  I just purchased an Office 365 subscription and will have to monitor that pretty closely.  We should be able to set our upload/download/update options in a more realistic fashion to take advantage of the 12-8 am free data time with Exede.  This is one reason why I haven't converted to a Liberty plan; since I see less 'Liberty' with them.

How did you get a 12-8 free data??  Mine is 12-5 am.  I would love to have a 8am cut off for free zone.  My windows 10 computer is set as METERED internet and does not update until I ask for it.  I think my data is being used on a windows 7 and thinking it is Microsoft sneaking junk onto my computer.

FWIW the only way I've found to tame the Office 365 updates is to disable them under File, Account (or Office Account depending on the application in the suite), Office Updates. I'll then go in once a month or so  and View Updates to determine whether I have the latest version. If an update is available, I enable updates and the force an update (update now) from the same Office Updates button. Once done or even when the download starts I disable updates again.

Not sure whether that still applies for Office 2016 and Windows 10, however; obviously I only do this during my free zone period.

Thanks for the hints.  I haven't even really tried doing anything with it yet (I have Office 2007) and Outlook doesn't like my security setting with Gmail so it won't send e-mail right now.  I do need to check it out and make sure downloads are'nt just occurring at random..

Yep, older versions of Office used to take their cue from one of the check boxes on the Windows Update settings (pre Windows 10). All that changed with Office 365 and there's no setting in Office 365 to "Notify me of updates and let me choose when to download and install". I believe JEP here has first hand experience with the Office 365 - Windows 10 mix - I haven't tried out that specific combination yet.

I recently battled a similar issue and the modem was replaced TWICE and finally one Tech decided to change the end (similar to LNB) on the dish and voila; no issues since then (knock on wood).  Notice the lights on your modem.  If all four lights are on and blinking simultaneously, then the modem is trying to update the software and/or firmware and will use up your data fairly quickly according to the technicians that came out.  Hold their feet to the fire and don't relent.

For those who are using Windows 10.  There are a lot of changes from previous versions of windows and it would take a lot of time to discuss them.  It would be better to visit
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/support and look at various topics and then configure Windows 10 to minimize update data issues.

The November Windows 10 update was 3G, but there are other Apps on your computer that are updating on their own schedule and depending on the version of Windows 10  and your configuration, you may not be able control when the update takes place.  Also if you use One Drive, which most hopefully are not, using and you have sync on and you make changes to files that you have on your computer and one drive they will sync using more of your data.

There is a feature referred to as Update Delivery Optimization:

Windows Update Delivery Optimization lets you get Windows updates and Windows Store apps from sources in addition to Microsoft. This can help you get updates and apps more quickly if you have a limited or unreliable Internet connection. And if you own more than one PC, it can reduce the amount of Internet bandwidth needed to keep all of your PCs up-to-date. Delivery Optimization also sends updates and apps from your PC to other PCs on your local network or PCs on the Internet.  On my local network does not use does not use additional data.

Before making any changes to your computer you should read all of the information provided at these links.

Also be mindful of when you click on hyper text that could take you out of Microsoft's web site, like to answers.com etc. read before you click on something because there advertisers that will try and sell/install something on  your computer so read carefully form 3rd party sites before clicking.

I try and get my information from Microsoft rather than 3rd party sites.
